The comfortable combination of white and wood tones is made more visually interesting with a more textured wood-look laminate for the cabinetry. The muted green sofa adds just the right touch of colour to the space.

Scandinavian designers have a knack of making utilitarian designs, such as mundane household items, stylish. Pehaps it’s because when you’re indoors during the many winter months , you’d want to be surrounded by things that look good. They also strongly believe that design is for everyone, not just the elite.

This Scandinavian-inspired condominium apartment quietly impresses with its space-enhancing white and wood tones, accessorised with pops of colour that give it personality. Channelling the philosophy of Scandinavian design, the designers at Eightytwo have also included some ingenious design features to make the space work harder for its owners.

Though a cliche, this term best describes the Scandinavian style. The style’s simple and clean aesthetics is always based on function, and do not shout for decoration sake.

A false wall with recessed lighting gives the living room design added dimension.

These clever clothes hooks were fashioned out of wood, and can be tucked away into its holder when not in use.

Shoe storage and spaces to store other knick-knacks were ingeniously combined in this design feature which looks like a stack of staggered boxes.

Why are Scandinavian interiors always light and bright? That’s because Scandinavian countries have long winters with few sunlight hours. White walls and lgiht-coloured floors, crisp cotton or comfortably worn linen in light colours, and blond wood, are cornerstones of the Scandinavian home.

If your home looks bare without accessories, you’re on the right track! Basically, the ornamentation comes in with the decor pieces, rather than built-in furniture, fussy details and glitzy materials. Some examples of decor and accessories to include are understated Modernist pendant lights, black and white photography, printed cushions, coloured glass vessels, white ceramic vases and painted vintage-look wooden candlesticks.

You hear the word Scandinavian style being used a lot, but what does it really mean? The style has a lot to do with the culture and lifestyle of the region (which includes Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Finland). By knowing what Scandinavian style is all about, you can easily translate it into your home!

Good design transcends time and trends. Poul Henningsen’s Artichoke (below) and PH5 lamps from the 1950s are still best-sellers today, and look thoroughly modern. Such is the enduring and timeless nature of Scandinavian design.

You know when you browse the Ikea catalogue, and think to yourself how “homey” and welcoming the interiors look? Not too “perfect” and showroom-like, the design behind Scandinavian homes emphasises on functionality, so it has to be very livable and practical.

Scandinavian-style interiors have really caught on lately here in our sunny island, and for good reason. We love its simplicity and functionality, the use of beautiful materials and focus on light and nature. The best part — it aligns with the requirements of our small-space homes!

True Scandinavian interiors will have flooring that is light in colour and preferably in natural wood. A light palette in general is preferred because it helps when the sun goes down so early. Dress up with rugs, for softness and subtle colour.

Google ‘Scandinavian homes’ and you’ll see pictures of living spaces with mostly white walls. That’s good news for those who want to save on wall finishes! The philosophy of keeping things simple, pure and beautiful means all you need is white paint. But you can add in a (small) splash of cool colours such as light grey and blue, like a glass backsplash in the kitchen or painted accent wall.

Choose chairs that are structured with soft curves, but nothing too trendy and contemporary. For sofas, go for plush, fabric-upholstered sectionals rather than leather. When there’s wood involved, choose lighter tones and rustic, more natural looking finishes. Mid-Century Modern furniture also tends to work well — include pieces with the classic pencil legs.

The Scandinavians have strong traditions in craft; and they have kept traditional methods of producing furniture to this day. Many Danish furniture designers has had roots in cabinet-making! You can see this in furniture such as the Hans Wegner Wishbone chair (pictured below), which had a woven paper cord seat when it was first introduced in 1949, and still retains a similar techniques of weaving the seat today.

The customised bed frame might have looked too bulky if not for the recessed lighting below the bed, and behind the headboard. Using crisp white bedlinen gives the room a fresh look, and brings out the warmth of the wood.

As wood is a material in plentiful supply in the region, Scandinavian furniture is mostly made from wood. And designers such as Alvar Aalto (known as the father of bentwood furniture) and Hans Wegner, pushed the boundaries of using this material.

Style up your windows! They’re not just for letting plenty of light in, but also work as focal points in a simple space. Install a ledge below and decorate. However, keep window dressing to a minimum with light, sheer curtains, and avoid the use of blinds.

Scandinavians love the outdoors, so bring in as much nature as possible, whether it is incorporating greenery or utilising the balcony. The fresh colours of nature will add interest to the understated interior, and enhance its earthy muted colour scheme. Use recycled glass jars as vases for an eco-friendly touch, too!

Living with nature and being outdoors play a big part in the lives of Scandinavians, and ingrains in them a deep respect and awareness of nature. Before it was cool to be eco-friendly, Scandinavian companies were already adopting green manufacturing practices. So if you buy furniture from a Scandinavian brand, most likely the company would have made sure how it’s made and the materials it is made of has as little impact on the environment as possible (which might add to the cost as well, but all for a good cause!).
