Sibling duo Pamela Shamshiri and Ramin Shamshiri struck out on their own from Commune to great success in 2016. Their star-studded client list includes Seth Rogan and Lauren Rogan, Anne Hathaway & Adam Shulman, and Sophia Amoroso of Girlboss. “Our look is narrative and experience driven so it’s always changing based on the place, architecture, client, and historical context.”

When asked to describe his firm’s approach to design, Founding Principal Rand Elliot, FAIA, answered, “The best award is a client who believes we solved their problem.”  That approach helps explain why 80 percent of the firm’s business comes from repeat customers. Elliot, who was born and raised in Oklahoma, studied architecture at Oklahoma State University. He was just 27 when he established Elliott + Associates Architects. Forty-two years later, the award-winning designer — who is still based in his home state — heads a team of about 12 credentialed professionals.

Bunny Williams is all about classic comfort, an informed eye, and a bit of fun. In her rooms, fine European antiques meet mirrored walls and gutsy artwork. She uses intense colors and delicate patterns with equal panache.

These are the designers we look to again and again. Each is distinctive—what unites them is their excellence. Here are the 2018 ELLE Decor A-List designers.

Since 2003, the firm has racked up over 148 design awards, and its projects have been covered by local and national media outlets. Residential Architect Magazine put the firm on its list of “50 Architects We Love.” In 2012, Architectural Record Magazine said that the firm’s project in Montauk was one of nine projects in the world to be recognized as a “Record House” for the year.

After some trial and error in whittling down a list that surely could number over 500, we settled on peer recognition, which means a lot in an industry as self-critical as interior design. Next came training and client prestige. For this ranking of the 20 top interior designers in the US, top billing went to the designer who has fetched the most awards and media attention and did so without ever leaving his beloved heartland.

The principals at Hariri & Hariri didn’t rise to the top of the interior design profession simply because they are sisters who were born in Iran and educated at Cornell University. Instead, that position has come from solid accomplishments in architecture and design, as well as from their forward-thinking management of one of the country’s top women-owned businesses, which opened in 1986.

Background: Design allowed the 50-year-old British decorator’s dream of living in Los Angeles to come true. His desire to become an actor had brought him from London to LA, but it was his natural flair for decorating that kept him there, as he is entirely self-trained. He believes that one is either born with style or not, and his innate talent is supplemented by inspiration garnered from travelling the world. With an opera singer father who toured the globe with his family, he grew up in a theatrical household where he was exposed to different forms of esthetic expression, which would eventually be interpreted in his interiors. A design buff as a child, he was scouring the flea markets for antiques as early as the age of 12, which he later continued in LA in order just to stay there, while acting in bit parts here and there. As fate would have it, the producer of Ed Wood’s I Woke Up Early the Day I Died, in which he was performing, asked him to decorate the offices of Hollywood Film Works after having visited his colonial-style house adorned with objects from the local flea markets. He accepted thinking he could score another acting job out of it. The day it was completed, Liz Heller, the then executive vice-president of Capitol Records asked him to decorate the iconic Capitol Building. Through Heller, he met the supermodel Cheryl Tiegs, for whom he completed his first real design project. One star introduced him to the next, and the rest, as they say, is history.

If he does contemporary, it is always with a weighty dose of history and references infused into it to produce a timeless yet timely scenario.

His strong point of view and a signature aesthetic—sleek, marbly interiors, geometric forms and muted color palette—is exemplified in a handful of stunning retail projects for the likes of Aquazzura, Balenciaga, and Alexander Wang. (Would calling him the successor to Peter Marino be hyperbolic? We don’t think so.) Korban is currently working on his first major residential development at 40 Bleecker, in New York City.

Style: Defined by an eclectic approach, he seeks a common thread in color, form or beauty among pieces from different centuries, always working with his clients to create their dream interiors that will reflect their personalities. Although he sees, smells and touches something that will inspire him each day, travel is his primary source of inspiration, drawing from different countries’ cultures, colors and tastes, which become the threads with which he weaves his decorative tapestry.

Quote: “Modern luxury to me means comfort. It doesn’t mean how big your home is, how many rooms you have or how much money you spend on your interiors, furnishings and art. It’s all about how comfortable you make it. We all work so hard in lives, so our homes must be our sanctuaries: places to relax, rejuvenate and re-center ourselves. I hate rooms where the furnishings look stiff, where there’s nowhere to lounge or sit comfortably. For me, comfort is king and the number one rule in design.”
