The Characteristics Of Traditional Interior Design Style

Traditional interior design is based upon the styles of Western homes built during the 18th-and-19th centuries. Furniture is the commanding characteristic of traditional design, drawing heavily on Northern European design styles from that same era, such as Queen Anne, Chippendale and Hepplewhite. Wood tones are typically darker, providing contrast to the lighter tones used on walls and ceilings. Deeper colors and dramatic patterns can be integrated into window treatments, floor coverings, and upholstery fabrics.

A traditional design style feels comfortable for any age group. It makes a space feel timeless, calm, and classic. This style is quite flexible and can be mixed with other interior design styles to create a unique look.

It is luxurious comfort. Traditional and formal design styles have some similar characteristics; the two styles use symmetrical and vertical lines in the design layout. The difference between a traditional and formal style is that the first one is slightly toned down and incorporates some characteristics of the casual style in the design elements, such as horizontal lines.

Here are some of the elements used in the traditional design style: Accessories such as table lamps, sconces, plants, artwork, candleholders, and vases are often displayed in pairs. Furniture pieces are placed in pairs and are centered in the room.

Pairs of design objects are typically arranged in balanced symmetry. Furniture pieces used in the traditional design style are usually made from dark wood such as cherry, maple, mahogany, oak, or walnut.

Hardwood floors are a favorite choice for a traditional designed room. The hardwood floor can be covered with a carpet or area rug under the furniture pieces. Fabrics and textiles (like damask) are popular in traditional interior design and can contain patterns such as florals, solid colors, stripes, geometrics, and small prints.

Walls in a traditional design style room are usually painted with neutral colors schemes. Ceilings in a traditional design style are frequently white in color and may have simple beams or classic mouldings, which are not overly detailed.

Light fixtures should have a traditional look. The light shades should be plain and white or ivory in colour. Window coverings such as traverse draperies are usually used in a traditional style room.

Recognizing the elements of the traditional design style in the living room pictured below: The traditional style living room pictured above has a calm comfortable and organized appearance. The layout of this room is symmetrical and vertical.

Furniture and accessories in the room are arranged in identical matched pairs of two, highlighting the fireplace as the focal point of the room. The furniture pieces are laid out on a straight axes and form perpendicular lines.

The room uses a yellow and light beige color scheme and soft lighting, which gives the room a dramatic feel. The area rug brings all of the colors in this living room together. The furniture in this room does not have elaborate details such as tassels and fringes and the ceiling has basic mouldings.

Hardwood floors are a staple of this style, and the richer the hue the better! Maple, mahogany, cherry, merbau and walnut are prominent species in traditional spaces.

Traditional design is all about the finer details. Here you will find a lot of grand touches like candleholders, china, classic lamps and shades, vases, decorative throw pillows, mirrors, sconces, book collections and chandeliers. It’s also common to add a dash of gold and silver to any of these accessories for some natural sophistication.

Architectural details are what make a traditional home design, well, traditional! Built-in cabinetry, crown molding, columns, wood paneling, and tray or coffered ceilings harken back to the 18th and 19th century home while also adding a touch of opulence. (Not to mention some extra storage!)

Popular fabrics in traditional design include chintz, crewel and velvet, but plaids, stripes, and tone-on-tone patterns are also used. Wood trims and molding are very commonplace in traditional interiors (especially crown molding, which accentuates the formal look) and they are seen equally in stained finishes and in light painted finishes. Wall stenciling and wall papers are also used extensively, along with coordinating upholstery and drapery fabrics. Traditional lighting depends heavily on metal based table and floor lamps, with neutral fabric shades.

Silhouette is also important in traditional style decorating. It is famous for its curved lines, wingback couches and chairs, and furniture in the Queen Anne, Chippendale and Sheraton styles.

There is nothing minimalist about traditional interior design, and the furniture is no exception. Traditional homes tend to have heavier, more sumptuous furniture pieces. You’ll find a lot of claw-foot and button-tufted pieces, armchairs, carved wood and metallic details. Traditional furniture (like the flooring) is generally made out of mahogany, maple and cherry. High-end fabrics are usually chosen for upholstery, including leather, velvet, and silk.

Symmetry is paramount in traditional design. Almost everything comes in pairs. This includes sofas, chairs, end tables, lamps, sconces and accessories. The purpose of pairing these pieces is to create a balanced space around an important focal point – usually a fireplace, television or piece of art.

Traditional is one of the most popular styles in interior design. But what is it exactly? The word “traditional” can mean something different to every homeowner. Today I’m sharing the characteristics of this favorite aesthetic so you can decide if Traditional Design is the right style for your home.

Traditional interior design is inspired by 18th and 19th century European décor. It’s a timeless style that exemplifies elegance and comfort. Traditional decorating is perfect for those who love antiques, classic art pieces, symmetry and other design elements that are rich with history. Traditional design prides itself on its harmony, order and its friendly charm.

To accessorize a traditional interior, classic artwork (such as painted portraits, nature scenes, history, and the arts) are used in various ornate frames along with flowers, decorative boxes and vases. Traditional accessories are typically grouped to create balanced symmetry. Overall, traditional design is classic and it exudes an understated elegance while creating a homey, comfortable space.

Heavy curtains, drapes and valances are also an intricate part of a traditional space, and area rugs in classic styles are a must-have in a traditional home décor.

If you love dark woods, refined colors and rich tones then this is the style for you! Traditional spaces usually have a neutral paint color on the walls so the room’s colorful furniture, artwork and accent pieces can pop. Red, brown, green and warm jewel tones are popular accent colors in traditional style design. Fusing these bold accent colors with neutral walls creates a warm and inviting space that also feels dignified. Florals, paisleys, damasks, stripes and plaids are also standard traditional décor patterns for accent walls, furniture pieces and drapes.
