Perched on a 2,000 feet hill, overlooking the capital city, it’s one of the most beautiful palaces in India. Sprawling over 32 acres of land, Falaknuma Palace is surrounded by elegant Japanese, Mughal and Rajasthani gardens. Made of Italian marble, the building’s interiors are lavishly adorned with antique statues, murals, Roman pillars, impressive Belgian chandeliers, rare woodworks and exquisite marble fountain and staircases. The western state of Rajasthan is home to many historic palaces and forts. But none compare to the grandeur of Hawa Mahal or the ‘Palace of Breeze’. Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the sandstone palace has 953 exquisite stain-glassed windows or jharokhas. It was constructed in this manner to enable royal women to enjoy festivals, royal processions and observe city life without being seen. Staying away from the public eye was important as the Purdah System practiced at that time dictated that royal ladies shouldn’t be seen by strangers. The installed windows were designed in such a way that one could view the city from the inside but nothing was visible from the outside. This unique feature combined with the fact that the entire structure was built without a foundation makes Hawa Mahal one of the most progressive architectural wonders of its time. The best time to visit is in the early morning when the sunlight enters through the windows and illuminates the palace interiors. Check out the visitor information here.
