You might wonder what the difference is between English country and French country. The answer is, not a lot. But in general, French country’s palette is warmer and brighter; English country furniture is sturdy and rustic while French country favors rounded shapes and a more refined appearance; French country leans towards toile, checks and gentle scenes of outdoor life while English country loves florals, dogs and horses, and a mix of patterns.

There’s nothing utilitarian or stark about the modern farmhouse look, but it’s not cutesy or colorful, either. The style embraces yesterday’s rustic beauty, casual comfort, and emphasis on simplicity, but adds today’s love of sleek touches of metal, interesting accessories and modern conveniences. The palette is simple, the wood is distressed, the overall vibe is serene.

Layer on the luxury with snug-as-a-bug textiles. It’s a sure-fire way to make guests feel welcome. A mix of whites and greys are a great base for piling on a whole host of patterns and colours. Not sure about having a blocky bedside table? A chair will do the job perfectly.

You can’t go wrong with the good old red, white and blue, but that doesn’t mean your Americana-themed bedroom has to look like a float in the Fourth of July parade. Instead of yesterday’s emphasis on flags, Uncle Sam, and an overwhelming palette, today’s look uses red, white and blue as cheery accents against a neutral backdrop. Checks, gingham, stripes, and stars are must-have patterns in this style, which although far more sophisticated than in the past, hasn’t lost a bit of its casual…MORE charm. This adorable Americana bedroom is from Talk of the House.

A major wash of blue can feel right as rain. Here, the headboard’s large-scale print serves as the jumping-off point for the room’s bold mix of motifs. In a smaller scale and lighter hue, the comforter’s subtle checks look cohesive, not clashing. Ornately patterned pillows provide a visual counter to the bed’s double dose of gingham.

While the brown, black, and gray elements of this lake home’s master bedroom might seem a bit quiet, the neutral palette helps the beautiful scenery outside the windows take center stage.

A hallmark of the 1990s, shabby chic took vintage, feminine style to an extreme. White rooms filled with an explosion of ruffles, light fixtures dripping crystal pendants, peeling paint, and pale floral prints were everywhere, until overload set in and decorators started turning to more minimalist styles. But shabby chic is back. Today, however, you’ll find far less ruffles and crystal. Instead, there’s a bit more color, a bit less pattern, and a lot less fuss and clutter. What you’ll still find…MORE is distressed furniture, lots of vintage or repurposed items and pretty floral prints.

A 1950s brass Hollywood Regency headboard that the homeowner picked up at a local antiques store is the centerpiece of the master bedroom in this Arizona ranch home. Its metallic finish inspired the room’s other golden accents, from the nightstand’s campaign details to the 1960s tufted yellow bench.

Create a soothing bedroom scheme with a cream palette. Add interest with plenty of texture, from cable-knit throws to subtly patterned rugs and upholstery. The main attraction here is an eye-catching pendant light that ties in with the colour scheme, but creates a dramatic feature.

The owners of this Maine cottage converted a storage unit already on the property into the ultimate he-and-she-shed. Now attached to the main house, the cozy quarters accommodate a queen-size bed and headboard flanked by custom floating bedside tables. Petite lamps and a homemade single-bulb pendant provide ample light without bulk, and a custom lumbar pillow made from Indian textiles helps the room feel a bit wider.

Country bedroom with floral wallpaper and mahogany sleigh bed

The bedroom in this 105-year-old Victorian farmhouse was originally the house’s parlor. The homeowner upholstered the white-painted bed in a graphic blue-and-white-check fabric to complement the whimsical sheets. Wallpaper with a wood grain pattern, a fresh way to achieve a similar effect as unpainted, wood-paneled walls, creates a warm backdrop for the crisp bed.

The way that this California bedroom’s white shiplap walls slope inward while maintaining a space above the bed adds dimension and extra coziness. The laser-cut lanterns casts soft shadows on the walls at night, adding to the effect.

Patterned textiles add dimension to light, bright spaces, as seen in the master bedroom of this rural Connecticut farmhouse. Although the homeowner mixed multiple patterns—windowpane plaid, vertical and horizontal stripes—the effect is still subdued, thanks to the consistent palette.

While this inviting bedroom gets a dose of character from multiple patterns, the real showstopper is the bed frame’s bold spindle design, a classic country style of furniture that’s making a comeback.

A handsome four-poster bed provides a heavenly place to sleep in this bedroom. The bed dressed with layers of textured welsh blankets creates a suitably cosy feel. A retro-style botanical print bed linen makes a real style statement.

It’s hard to beat the cozy charm of a cottage bedroom. This classic look always features plenty of mixed patterns – particularly floral prints – along with distressed furniture, pastels, lots of throw pillows, and a bed made extra-comfy with thick quilts or blankets. What you won’t find in today’s cottage bedroom, however, is an overabundance of cutesy ruffles and flowers or an excess of knickknacks (although the cottage vibe never approaches minimalism). And today, a few shots of bright color…MORE are likely to liven up the otherwise tranquil palette.

This scheme starts out classic, with an elegant upholstered bed and trailing-floral wallpaper, but stops becoming twee once you add contemporary lighting and super-chic accessories. Here yellow tones have been balanced out with a neutral oatmeal on the floor and with textiles, with added pops of aqua for freshness.

“We just wanted a spot that was restful and calm,” says the owner of this Washington farmhouse. Once they peeled the 1970s pink floral wallpaper off the walls, they uncovered drywall that was bowed, so a friend hit it with a hammer and discovered shiplap, which they painted white. They brought in a platform bed, antique blankets, and an old leather chair from Craigslist.

But there’s nothing fussy or overly traditional…MORE about today’s English country décor. Instead, it’s whimsical, colorful and oh-so-comfortable.

Storage can be really tricky in an attic bedroom – after all, it’s hard to position a wardrobe under a sloped ceiling. To counteract this problem, chests of drawers have been used as bedside tables – a clever trick to maximise space and keep the room uncluttered. Pretty pastel bedding adds a subtle hint of colour to the neutral scheme.

Take a hotel’s approach to decorating a bedroom and make the look almost entirely symmetrical. One side of the bed here is almost like the mirror image of the other, from the cushions to the bedside tables and table lamps. The plants are an exception, and show that there’s no need to get too bogged down in particulars.

The owners of this Nashville treehouse designed the space around this iron bed, which was originally in a guest room in the main house. Made of bark cloth, the pillow’s material is aptly named for its environment.

Set against the white walls and floors, the mostly white pillows and duvet cover establish a cohesive, not choppy, look and serene vibe. Meanwhile, a few red stripes and a floral coverlet add just enough pattern to keep the room from feeling lifeless in this Florida cottage.

Rather than edit down a large collection of artwork, this California homeowner created a gallery wall that stretches from the crown molding to the baseboards, making room for every cherished piece.

Add a dash of colour to an otherwise neutral scheme by papering one small corner with a decorative floral wallpaper. Make the look wonderfully girly by hanging a jewellery stand on the wall for easy access to your favourite pearls and necklaces.

Blend spicy cinnamon shades with soft blues for a restful retreat. A naive floral on the wall sets the scene for a folky mix of woodland motifs, embroidery, weaves and knits. Furniture has been kept simple so that the prints can be the centre of attention.

The soft color scheme throughout this Alabama lake house brings an element of serenity to this room. The muted brown, green, blue, and tan hues were all inspired by the breathtaking scenery surrounding the home.

Create a pretty shabby-chic scheme with a mixture of prints. Bring warmth to a bedroom by combining wooden backdrops with linen layers. Choose and upholstered headboard for comfort and add a personal touch with cushion combinations and lovely leafy bunting. Leave a basket of blankets in easy reach in case the night gets particularly chilly.

One of the beauties of the country style is how many sub-styles fall…MORE under its large umbrella: French country, farmhouse, cottage, rustic, Southwestern, English country, Americana and shabby chic all share the easy, friendly, and most of all, casual country charm. Like all decorating styles, country rises and falls in popularity, and modifies and updates to incorporate contemporary decorating aesthetics. Today’s country is a far cry from the overly fussy, feminine and ruffled looks of yesteryear. So if it’s been awhile since you considered this once-again-riding-high decorating classic, take a look at the eight bedrooms featured here. Each shows off a different face of today’s take on country style.

The blue patterned wallpaper was the starting point for this pretty bedroom, and the colour scheme centres around it. From the shelf and bedside table to the throw, blue accents abound in this space. But not just in block colours – other patterns, from polka dots to florals, work well. Hints of rose add a beautiful contrast, too.

Century-old quilts in Pinwheel (left) and Bear’s Paw patterns dress the antique wrought-iron beds in one of this Nantucket cottage’s bedrooms. The new rag rug was handwoven by area artisans at the Weaving Room, and the demijohn lamp hails from an antiques shop.

Yes, the guest room of this Maine home is small (just 10 feet wide!), but what it lacks in square footage it more than makes up for in views. It overlooks the scenic backyard filled with birch and spruce trees. The tiny table—just big enough to accommodate a bud vase, cell phone, or coffee cup—was a gift from the owner’s aunt.

A good tiny bedroom strategy: Think like a boutique hotel. Far-flung friends—a.k.a. air mattress aficionados—will appreciate the fluffy towels, reading lights, and wait a minute, is that a pull-down bed? Get even more inspiration for making small spaces work harder.

Don’t underestimate the value of soft-spoken accents. Here, pale pink pillow shams and glass knobs play an important supporting role to the bedroom’s blue-and-white foundation. Accessories (a book, the basket, and a blanket) in slightly brighter shades of pink finish the look with a little extra oomph.

Refresh a tired space with a lively mix of patterns and hues. A playful bedspread (Tatiana by Kathryn M. Ireland) provides an easy jumping off point to inspire other design elements, like a chippy vintage whitewashed bed that gives soul to the space and keeps feminine prints from feeling too prim. Bold textiles pop against neutral wood paneling, and unexpected accents like a vintage hat mold on the table make a space feel truly personal.

Yesterday’s rustic style was heavy on the log-cabin vibe, complete with lodge details, bear and moose motifs and dark colors. Today, the rustic style is more sophisticated. Mix aged wooden pieces with contemporary lighting and accessories, keep the palette soft and neutral, pile the bed high with luxurious bedding, and you have a room that soothes and pampers, yet is loaded with personality. Add further interest with twig décor or a faux fur area rug or throw blanket. It’s a far cry from…MORE sleeping in a primitive cabin.

Place a bed in the centre of a room with a vaulted ceiling for a symmetrical look that enjoys sloped ceilings on both sides. Wall lights are a great way to save space on your bedside table and will be ideal for reading at night. Choose a French-style bedside table with legs to avoid the ‘blocky’ feel that floor-standing units can have.

Hang a feature wallpaper on one wall of your bedroom to create a luxurious effect. The wall where the headboard of your bed is the best place to go for, as it is the natural centre of the room. Choose a design in a relaxing colour and print so that it doesn’t make your mind buzz before bed, and keep furniture white to let the design stand out.

Our guide to bedroom design is jam-packed with dozens of decorating tips and tricks to help you transform your room into a cozy retreat.

Designer Ashley wanted this room to express an “all in with a cocoon-like vibe.” Long drapes, a tufted headboard, cozy bedding, and a variety of soft colors and patterns make the master bedroom of this Alabama cabin feel warm and lived-in.

Classic wallpaper with a small floral and hummingbird motif has been introduced in this bedroom to soften the impact of the rich mahogany sleigh bed. White bedlinen adds a crisp, smart feel to the space, while a soft grey throw adds cosiness and warmth. The cushion on the bed mirrors the print on the wallpaper.

The oak bed, purchased by the owner’s parents in England in the ’70s, is a handsome counterpoint to the room’s frill factor, which is consistent with the tiny home’s entire aesthetic.

The laid-back atmosphere of country superstar Ronnie Dunn’s Tennessee barn home is maintained by keeping the palette neutral while focusing on organic textures (lots of linen and rope) and raw materials (metal, wood, and stone). An antique barn door track gets a second life as a picture rail above the tufted burlap headboard in the master bedroom.

Designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard isn’t afraid of color—and you shouldn’t be either! A seafoam green four-poster bed pairs perfectly with a bright blue comforter and patterned wallpaper.

Create a warming country bedroom scheme with faux-fur throws and plenty of cushions – heaven for curling up on a cold night. Neutral paint on the walls allows flexibility when decorating, but provides a warmer look than white tones, which is especially important in a country cottage, where you want to feel snug.

Turn your bed into a focal point with a tweed fabric. After all, what could be more appropriate for a non-city dwelling than this hardy fabric with country appeal? Splashes of red are used to add extra warmth and are found in a multitude of patterns around the room.

An eaves bedroom can be a little tricky to decorate – not only are the ceilings an awkward shape, but the proportions of the room can be tricky to furnish, too. Add character to an expansive ceiling by papering part way up the wall – this pretty wallpaper adds interest up high. You could also try stars to create a night-sky effect.

Choose tweed for the ultimate in country chic. This upholstered sleigh bed is central to the scheme and it adds plenty of interest while keeping the look neutral. Colour has been confined to other textiles and the vivid artworks on the mantelpiece, which create a homely feel.

Made by this East Alabama homeowner’s grandmother, the hand-stitched quilt provided design inspiration for the entire guest room, starting with the red-orange paint on the French doors. The Laredo iron bed, another historically accurate touch, tempers the sweetness of the graphic floral motif.

Yesterday’s French country style was a riot of sunflowers, grapes and wine motifs, roosters and bold color. Today, you’ll still find the traditional warm palette, but it’s softer. Cheery yellow, sage green and terracotta are still hallmarks of the look, but in softer tints, and against a backdrop of creamy white, whispery peach or palest tan, rather than the darker mustards or oranges popular in past versions of this style. One thing that hasn’t changed: toile is a must-have in the French…MORE country room. Mix it with florals, checks or stripes, but keep the palette limited to just a few colors with the same intensity for today’s take on French country.

This inviting room offers traditional country charm with a few fresh updates. For a fresh, not fussy, approach, stick to one color scheme and balance large-scale prints (like the floral and gingham) with small ones (like the plaid and block print).

Make use of earthy tones to add colour to a neutral country scheme. Yellow, orange, red and brown all feature in this eye-catching stripey rug, which injects life into the room, while blending perfectly with the wooden finishes. Cushions on the bed add detail higher up, tying the whole look together.

Inspired by a collection of vintage landscape paintings, designer Stephanie Sabbe created a boy’s bedroom with the potential to grow with him.

If the words “country decorating style” fill your mind with visions of a 1980s-era explosion of dusty blue and mauve ruffles along with be-ribboned geese, it’s time to get up to date. There’s a reason the country style is a decorating classic: it’s extremely versatile, it’s casual and welcoming, it’s easy to adapt to any budget and – with today’s updates – it is relaxing and peaceful: just the vibe you want in your bedroom.

Mix and match modern and traditional styles. Four-poster beds are the ultimate in traditional, but this bespoke design has a very contemporary look about it, with its chunky dark-wood posts that make a statement against the neutral walls. Four-posters don’t have to be overly ornate – and this is a great example of that.

Yesterday’s Southwestern décor was heavy, super-rugged and filled with dark wood and intense color, especially red, terracotta and black. Today, the style is reinvigorated with softer hues, trimmed-down furniture, and an overall simpler feel. What you’ll still find, however, are Navajo prints on rugs, bedding or window treatments, along with rustic touches and animal motifs, particularly wolves or bison. The gorgeous Southwestern bedroom shown here was designed by Domestic Imperfection.

A reclaimed barn door serves as this master bedroom’s headboard. The women nabbed the sisal rug at a Pottery Barn outlet. The walls are painted Smokey Taupe by Benjamin Moore.

The master bedroom in this Mississippi farmhouse features a charcoal headboard inspired by an old door, which brings out the blue in the hand-woven rug and serves as a perfect accent piece in an otherwise neutral room.

The pine-clad ceiling in singer-songwriter Holly Williams’ bedroom is painted a cloudy gray. The star of the room—a wrought- iron canopy bed from Restoration Hardware—is a close match to an antique one that belonged to her maternal grandmother. To toughen up the otherwise feminine space, Holly brought in a rustic leather club chair and simple pine chest. Brass sconces cast a warm light while keeping tabletops clear.
