6. Sanctuary Slogan: Decide what qualities, characteristics and atmosphere you want to create and name it—this is your “Sanctuary Slogan”. We each have unique needs that our environment can support us in fulfilling; begin to determine how your environment can support you. Place this slogan in a spot that will serve as a daily reminder to help you stay focused on your ideal life and home.

Remember the Cat Steven’s song, “Wild World?”  The lyrics, “Oh baby baby it’s a mad world,” continue to apply to the world just as it did in 1971.  Maybe more so now that we have social media.  I can’t open Facebook without being bombarded by negativity or anger from either side of the political spectrum.  It’s exhausting.   I really do just want to see a video of a cute dog and find out what my friends from around the globe are up to. Life is filled with what I dub as “static in your life,” it can be traffic, negativity you might run into throughout the day, work pressures, home pressures, kids, deadlines, the news, social media and on and on…. Seriously, I’m starting to stress out just from typing this.  Yikes.   Shanti Shanti.

10. Technology Zones: Allocating spaces to play in, rest in and work in will help you unconsciously move from one activity to another with ease and grace. Design a layout within your home with designated areas for various activities. This creates an automatic cue to your subconscious informing you that it is time for a specific activity. This will help to construct a space that supports balance and harmony.

3. Color: Color impacts you on an emotional, psychological and physical level. Studies have shown that color can change body temperature and appetite. It can affect your mood or level of energy. Begin to become aware of how different colors impact you before determining what hue to paint your walls.

4. Remove Bad Mojo: The experiences you have had in your life hang from the walls or sit on the shelves of your home. You probably have memories associated with your couch or the picture on the wall. When the associations are negative these reminders can drain you. Be aware of the items in your home that are associated with undesirable feelings. By removing this “bad mojo” you will be one step closer to creating a serene space.

The counters and other pieces of furniture are movable, which grants the space an extra degree of flexibility, something invaluable for both owner and customer, as a new arrangement might just bring them an unexpected and happy surprise on a subsequent visit.

How do you feel when you walk into your home? Happy? Calm? Overwhelmed by your ‘to do’ list? In today’s hectic world stress is always present, but your home shouldn’t contribute to it. “Your home either nurtures and supports you or it depletes your energy and leaves you exhausted,” says interior designer, conscious living expert and founder and CEO of Home and Harmony Lifestyle, Christa O’Leary. “In today’s frenetic world it is more important than ever to create a calm and peaceful space that allows you to recharge.”

7. Nurture Nature: Innately as humans we are designed to appreciate the natural beauty all around us. This is especially true in nature. By incorporating natural elements into your space you feed the intrinsic yearnings deep within you that foster a sense of inner calm and peace. Bring in a wood turned bowl, fountain or acorns to encourage a space of serenity.

8. Plant Power: Plants are important for many reasons when designing a restorative home. Not only is it an additional way to bring nature into your home, it also helps to clean and re-oxygenate the indoor air. Incorporating plants into your design will help to eliminate the noxious off-gasses from many products giving you a serene sigh of relief.

Exposed concrete ceiling beams, rough in texture, give this interior a touch of rusticity that reminds us of how earthy flowers truly are. The juxtaposition against the overall elegance of the space, however, imitates the works of art that some can create with elements from such rustic beginnings.

2. Conquer Clutter: Clutter produces physical and unconscious chaos. Not only can it leave you scrambling to find the keys as you are racing out the door but it can weigh on you even when you are sitting at your desk 20 miles away. Put a plan in place. Whether it’s ready to burst from behind closet doors or it’s those piles of paper on the dining room table, it is time to tackle the tasks and tame the tension it creates.

11. Take Action: It is easy to become overwhelmed with the to-do’s of daily living in the modern world. Adding in items that need to be completed around your home can be wearisome. Take a moment to reflect on what you would like your home and life to look like and begin by taking small steps each day to create a calm and peaceful home. Remember that small steps will get you closer to your goal than inaction.

The best way to restore and create a peaceful and serene home is to clear the clutter and visual chaos from your home. When your home is filled with stuff, whether it’s piles of papers, laundry piles, DIY projects, or even too many accessories or furnishings, your eye has no peaceful place to land and the clutter produces physical and unconscious chaos.  Most of us could do with about half as much stuff in our house and things would feel a lot calmer. Put a plan in place and start tackling the tasks of de-cluttering your space.  Remember, all rooms are important- whether it’s a space you haven’t finished decorating or a room you don’t often use- don’t leave any room unattended.  You can create harmony in your home by making each room inspired.

It’s my mission at Coastal Farmhouse, from the interior design projects I work on to the products I choose to carry for our online store,  that everything is well thought out in order to bring harmony between people and their homes, after all, it is my mantra – “to be happy in your home is to be happy in your life.”

I love the natural and organic appeal of adding found elements into a room.  I feel by incorporating natural elements into your home you will naturally foster a space of calmness and tranquility.  I always look for items that have interesting shapes and texture.  I’ve created vignettes and color palettes from a single twisted branch of driftwood I’ve found on one of my walks along the beach.  Use wood bowls and trays to display shells, coral, beach glass, feathers, or rocks inside the pretty vessels.  The benefit is thrice-fold, spending time in nature is rejuvenating, items you collect do not cost anything, and your home will have a personal, healthy, and unique design touch.

The interior is peaceful and serene, an open floor plan that allows all space to be visible upon entrance. An abundance of natural light seeps in, as well, making the interior luminous and tranquil. Flower arrangements dot the space, granting it subtle touches of color and vibrant life.

Once you’ve cleared the excess clutter it’s time to think about color palettes and textures. Color impacts you on an emotional, psychological, and physical level. There have been numerous studies that show how color can affect your mood, appetite, and level of energy.  It’s quite amazing how a room feels when you change up the color and the types of fabrics and textures in a room.  Don’t worry about what’s trending, color and home decor trends will come and go. You make your home beautiful by choosing colors and textures that reflect your preferences and personalities. The trick is to blend the colors you like into a pleasing combination.    Of course, my personal design preference is the neutrals (variations of black, gray, white, and brown), because their virtue lies in their flexibility.  I can add color to liven things up or subtract color to tone things down.

1. All rooms are important: Even those that are overlooked or unattended. Whether it’s a space you haven’t finished decorating or the family catchall, it often feels easier to close the door on these rooms and deal with them another day. Unfortunately, they weigh on your unconscious and zap your energy—they are essentially a task left undone. Create home harmony by making each space in your home inspired.

Gigi Verde Kobe is an atelier that creates custom flower arrangements for party and event spaces, in addition to serving as a lovely flower shop. It is located in Chuo-ku, a ward of the city of Kobe, in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, and covers a total ground area of 76 square meters. The shop was designed in 2017 by SIDES CORE, a Japanese architectural firm originally founded in 2005.

9. Welcome Windows: We are living in a toxic soup that can create disharmony and disease. Unfortunately the air trapped inside your home is many times more toxic than the air outdoors. Open your windows each day and remember to take a deep breath.

Natural light is needed for all humans to thrive and to be healthy. At the same time – your home reaps the benefit as well.  Natural light can kill bacteria that in your home and it creates an ambiance that can’t be rivaled by artificial lighting sources.   In many homes, the problem isn’t the sources of light but rather the ability to let light in effectively. What are your current window treatments?  Heavy blinds, thick drapery, and layered fabric curtains often keep out natural light. Consider using lighter-weight fabrics such as cotton or linen fabrics and remember to open your windows each day to bring in the fresh air and recharge your space.

Today I thought I would share some ideas and simple solutions that I use for restoring peace, harmony, and balance back into you home so you can create your own sanctuary.

Which is why I truly believe that your home ought to be your sanctuary- providing you with a feeling of serenity and luxury as a retreat from the crazy turmoil of the outside world.   Your home should bring you joy and harmony to restore balance and happiness to your daily life.  At the end of the day when I open the door and walk into my home, I am completely at ease.  I’m greeted by my dog and cat who think I’m the greatest thing they’ve ever seen. My house is filled with everything I love, the colors and textures I’ve chosen are peaceful and everything is in its place. So you’re probably thinking, “Yeah Yeah, that sounds great but completely unrealistic in my life.”  It’s not.  Seriously. It may not happen overnight. But everyone can get there.  I have to work on it every day.  If you have not read Marie Kondo’s book, “The Lifechanging Magic of Tidying Up,” I HIGHLY suggest adding this to your reading list.  I’m not going to go into why this is a must-have, but you can skip on over to The Real Mrs. Darcy’s blog where Anne has written a great blog post on what she learned from the book in tidying up her own space.

After a long day, there’s nothing better for your body and mind than a spa visit. However, not everyone has the financial ability to visit a luxurious spa, so why not turn your bathroom into an at-home spa? Create a soothing sanctuary in your own home where you can take a relaxing shower or warm bath to de-stress. All it takes is a few more elements to evoke the spa-like atmosphere.

5. Positive Vibes: Once you gain awareness of the memories that make up your home, notice those items that bring a smile to your face. Begin to add items from fun excursions that will remind you of good times and uplifting people. These items will give you a boost and nurture and inspire you as you move through your home and life.
