Office Interior Design Inspired By The Human Anatomy

The new Algotec Office occupies three floors in a larger building and all three floors are linked by an interior staircase. The staircase is private and only used by the company’s employees to interact with each other. It has in industrial design complemented by a series of unique hanging pendant lights which mimic the shape and structure of human tissue cells.

The role of architecture according to Thomas Heatherwick, Christian Benimana and more

As a general rule, the office maintains a fine balance between shared and private spaces and also between social and individual areas. This was applied to all three floors, each of which includes a combination of social and lounge sections, meeting areas and workspaces.

A lot of employers would agree that making people feel inspired and comfortable at the workplace is the most important thing. But you can’t really search the web for ideas and just apply them to your office because each company and each group are different and inspired by different things. Usually, this has a lot to do with the domain of activity of those involved. For Algotec, a tech company specialized in medical imaging, the inspiration came from the human body.

MAD founder Ma Yansong said he wants the building to explore the similarities between fashion and architecture.

Elements such as cells, tissues and the spinal column were the base for the design of the office. They inspired a lot of features, including the partitions that divide the meeting rooms and work spaces. The wooden strips that form the shell for the glass walls mimic the ribcage.

Algotec Systems (now part of Kodak) is a technology company that provides healthcare facilities with web enabled, advanced solutions for medical imaging. In 2016, the company moved into a new office in Ra’anana, Israel, which was designed by architecture firm Setter Architects.

Called the Xinhee Design Center, the 61,000-square-metre structure will feature a central atrium and six projecting wings, creating what MAD describes as a “star-shaped layout that formalises a solid ‘bone’ structure frame”.

There is a physical separation  between the two spaces. The basement floor is the perfect place for different uses  a company (or two) might need. The wide space gives the impression of air, of space; the walls ensure artificial lighting, air circulation and climatization at the same time. What else can you wish for?  The combination of materials, wooden structure, metal  and all the other elements offer a global perspective of the existing space, illuminated by the central skylight and also ensuring natural ventilation.

Beijing-based based MAD has designed a building with a clearly distinguishable internal skeleton and external skin. It will house the offices of Xinhee and its six subsidiary brands in the coastal Chinese city Xiamen.

Have you ever imagined how does an architect’s office look like? This one, which is located in Matosinhos, Portugal, seems to be a good example from Nuno Sampaio Arquitetos. It occupies a large central area which consits of offices, meeting room and which was divided  in order to provide enough space for two companies whose people can meet if they want, or stay in their part if they have different programs.

Each of the six wings – one for each brand – will contain a mix of open-plan offices and elevated gardens.

“During the design process, our planning ideas drew on the company’s content world – the human body and its components. The inspiration for the interior planning and design came from images of the human body’s elements, like cells, molecules, tissue, and the spinal column. Together, all these elements formed the basis for a unique design language that drew together the interior planning and design concepts. As the design team, our challenge was to use imaging from human anatomy and translate it into a fresh architectural vocabulary. We did this by processing anatomical images through filters of scale, materials, prints, and textures. The result was a distinctive design vocabulary that in turn generated a set of design ideas and solutions. Accordingly, the conference room is covered with a construction of wood strips simulating the layering of human tissue; the textures and graphics covering the partitions replicate cell patterns in large-scale; the wall coverings and floorings simulate the structure of the ribcage; and the suspended lighting fixtures are inspired by human tissue and cells. Assisted by that special vocabulary, all these imaging and design elements create a warm and inspiring workspace. It’s a ‘home’ that encourages shared productive efforts, and preserves the fine balance between closed private spaces and open spaces for social meetings and gatherings,” said Setter Architects

“It’s interesting for a building with such an intrinsically logical structure to look floating and free,” he said.

“We envision it as a building with skin and bones,” he explained. “The correspondence of clothing and architecture is they both explore the relationship between the interior and the exterior.”

The central atrium will provide a meeting place for the different departments. Accessible to the public, this space will also include a bridge that doubles as a catwalk for fashion shows.

MAD is best known for projects including the undulating Harbin Opera House, the horseshoe-shaped Sheraton Huzhou Hot Spring Resort and the twisted Absolute Towers.

According to Ma, this delicate, sun-shading skin will make the eight-storey building look “elegant and floating”.

The architects’ main goal for this project was to translate all the human anatomy elements into a unique architectural language that would make the office look and feel fresh but also very pleasant and comfortable, almost like a home. New ideas and solutions were implemented in order to get the desired results.

A translucent coating will be applied to the building’s exterior to control the amount of light and heat that enters. There will also be solar panels on the roof to offer a sustainable source of energy.
