Wood and metal interplay The delightful textural interplay of grainy, earthy wood and smooth, lustrous metal is a very popular industrial interior design trend. Many choose to extend the presence of metal by selecting high-sheen steel or chrome accents in the kitchen and for light fixtures.

There’s more to minimalist interior design than meets the eye. Where you might think ‘stark’, minimalists see ‘simple’. Where you might think ‘cold’, minimalists see ‘sleek’. Where you might think ‘boring’.

And there are very good reasons for that. There is beauty in simplicity, but like any interior design style, there’s also an element of skill required. There’s also a clear intention behind the decisions made.

Here are nine principles to getting minimalist design just right.

Select a standout piece of furniture If you’re stuck on where to start, find a standout piece of furniture and let it shine. It’s then about building a story around it with lamps, plants and art.

Saying yes to colour doesn’t automatically mean you’re inviting chaos.

Invest in quality fixtures While some minimalist movements are about embracing frugality, minimalist interior design it not necessarily about spending less. The popular minimalist bachelor pad owned by the wealthy professional is a clear testament to that.

Quality fixtures, like designer light fittings, high-grade storage units and contemporary gas fires, are an impressive way to decorate without cluttering.

Add accent elements Mix up a neutral decor (think grey, stone, beige) with an element in a contrasting colour, like a work of art, piece of furniture or feature wall. An accent element is kind of like giving a room a surprise – and it doesn’t have to be garish.

It’s simply a wonderful way to draw attention to something extra special rather than it getting lost in a crowd.

Exposed pipes, beams and ducts This really is the signature feature of industrial interior design. Leaving exposed structural and mechanical elements that other styles invariably conceal has been the boldest move the design world has seen in a while.

Practicality and creativity combined to create this trend when people began converting former industrial spaces for residential living. Effectively eliminating the cost of covering all the exposed pipes, beams and ducts running along the high ceilings and walls, it also, in a sense, kept the building’s history alive.

Floors in industrial home design To keep true to the industrial feel, many opt for polished concrete floors. This is a practical and economical option, fitting perfectly with the theme. Coarseness, imperfections and patches make little difference.

The effect is stunning. Those who wish to bring some added contrast and warmth into an industrial interior design prefer timber or stone floors. Both these flooring options also work very well.

Choose multifarious materials This design style doesn’t have to be about ‘same same’.  If you love a colour palette, give it texture by using a variety of materials – timber, glass, pottery, cloth, canvas.

Let a work of art dominate Choose a single super sized art piece for a room and let it dominate. Add colour and life to an austere masculine space with a gorgeous feminine piece.

Industrial interior design walls Many lofts and old factories being converted using industrial interior design ideas come with a wall in brick or concrete that can become an amazing feature in the re-styled space.

This is a big bonus because it stands out as an eye-catching attribute that is a conversation piece. If it doesn’t look worn enough, give it a more distressed appearance to maximize drama.
