The vertical lines of the custom cabinetry and tile backsplash were selected to visually add height to the space and cylindrical lighting over the island continues the effect.
Project Solutions The Robert Legere Design team reworked the footprint of the entire 1st floor of this two story duplex to create the largest kitchen area in the condominium development. By combining two areas originally designated for the kitchen and eat-in dining, the design team was able to add more than 100 square feet to the redesigned kitchen. Also, relocating the dining room with a beautiful butler’s pantry serving area adjacent was the final touch in making this the perfect entertaining space.

An oversized island now serves as the central point of the kitchen and provides ample space for prep-work, entertaining and casual dining. A bookshelf built into the island added the space necessary to house the homeowners’ extensive cookbook collection, an appliance garage houses the most often used kitchen prep appliances and gadgets and a large capacity wine refrigerator column provides the perfect climate for the couple’s extensive wine collection.
Having previously relied on the Robert Legere Design Team to transform two beach condos, as well as the offices for the husband’s advertising agency, homeowners in Montville, NJ, invited the Design Team into their primary residence for a redesign that would begin with the 15-year-old builder’s kitchen and grow to encompass the dining and living areas, entry foyer and powder room. The kitchen was completely transformed — a long, rectangular island replaced an angular one and opened up the space; crisp white subway tiles provided a timeless backsplash; and the vastly increased cabinet space was paired with a clean, grey and white color scheme that flows into the adjacent dining room.It was the view from the kitchen into the dining room that triggered the advancement of this redesign but the homeowners were keen to anchor new design ideas with some existing traditional pieces. The Design Team created balance throughout by offsetting darker, heavier pieces with soft metallic and mirrored finishes, natural motifs and textures, and a complementary palette that flows from space to space. In the dining room, a formal, traditional table is married with the more modern look of silver upholstery; peaceful wall art picks up on the color scheme, as well as the subtle tree theme, of the space; and a contemporary chandelier is softened with the aged look of mercury glass. In the living room, dark colors and heavy textiles were replaced with tranquil blue walls and a shimmering silver area rug. The more traditional form of the wingback chairs is made modern with an oversized pattern that is then complemented by the repetitive circles of the side table. This is a home where traditional sensibilities transition seamlessly to modern touches time and again. The completed redesign transformed the home from dark and traditional to light and tranquil and morphed unused spaces into favorite locations.

The result is one of a grand, gourmet kitchen that provided the homeowners with all the extras they desired and managed to make the overall floor plan feel more spacious in the process.

Topping the list of must-haves was ample space for storage, food preparation and gourmet cooking capability, as well as ample storage for the couples’ extensive wine collection. The kitchen area also needed to flow seamlessly into the adjacent living room area.
