If you’re contemplating a kitchen makeover, but don’t want to break the bank on brand new cabinets, you’ll want to explore your options for kitchen cabinet refacing. In many cases, refacing your kitchen cabinets can give them a “like new” appearance, or even create a whole new style aesthetic for your kitchen.

Knowing when your kitchen cabinets were originally constructed is another consideration. “Don’t spend money to refront products that are truly worn out.” Says Gary Reynolds, a cabinet craftsman in North Carolina, “Cabinets built prior to the 1980s were generally built of better materials than newer ones.

Back then, 3/4-inch plywood was actually 3/4-inches thick and particle board was used for floor underlayment,” explains Gary, who handles both refacing and new cabinet construction.

A fresh take on knobs and pulls is one of the quickest fixes for what ails your kitchen cabinets. Browse for new options at your local big-box store, at handcrafted glass or metal shops or from specialty retailers like Restoration Hardware, which stocks this knob in amber, green, violet, black and clear glass.

Your other option for refacing is to strip wood cabinets of their stain, sand down to bare wood, and finish the cabinets with new stain or paint. This is a more labor-intensive process, but it’s a viable option if a press-on veneer isn’t appealing to you.

Fans of refacing say this mini-makeover can give a kitchen a whole new look at a much lower cost than installing all-new cabinets. “Cabinet refacing can save up to 50 percent compared to the cost of replacing,” says Cheryl Catalano, owner of Kitchen Solvers, a cabinet refacing franchise in Napierville, Illinois.

Lorey Cavanaugh of Kitchen and Bath Design Consultants in Hartford, Conn., agrees. “The old adage about not throwing good money after bad comes into play here,” Lorey says. Thoroughly inspect the interiors of your existing cabinets for any signs of water damage from plumbing, excessive wear and tear or faulty construction.

Cabinet refacing is also a much less involved process than removing old cabinets and installing new ones. “Refacing is an ideal option for many people because of its convenience,” says Cheryl. “The process doesn’t require removal of the appliances, so the kitchen stays functional while the work is being done.

Deciding which of these three options you choose comes down to budget. However you decide to reface your cabinets, complete the look with all new hardware. Pulls and knobs contribute a lot to your kitchen’s style, swapping them out can take your kitchen from traditional to modern.

Many homeowners today are saving money by refacing rather than completely replacing their existing kitchen cabinets. There are three primary ways to reface cabinets: 1. Refinish or paint existing cabinet and drawer fronts.

2. Install new wood or laminate veneer over existing cabinet and drawer fronts. 3. Install completely new cabinet doors and drawer fronts.

Whether you’re planning a simple kitchen spruce-up or a complete overhaul, deciding what to do about your cabinets is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make. New cabinets can take up nearly 50 percent of your total kitchen renovation budget, and functional cabinets can mean the difference between a kitchen that works and one that doesn’t.

But what if you can’t afford to buy all-new cabinets with the latest storage features and styles? Read on for our tips.

If you have solid but unremarkable builder-grade cabinets, the simplest route to a high-end look is adding some height with crown molding. Interior designer Sarah Macklem of The Yellow Cape Cod tackled this project in her own kitchen with striking results.

If your kitchen has good bones but simply looks tired, painting your cabinets can be just what the doctor ordered. Mix up colors on upper and lower cabinets, or on cabinets and islands as shown here, to add richness.

These cabinets are painted in Windsurf from Behr Paints; the island is done in Snowy Pine and the walls are Spice Garden. Behr recommends using semi-gloss enamel for painting cabinets.

Another alternative for homeowners with older cabinets in good condition is to remove the doors altogether and convert their existing cabinets to open shelving. Interior shelves can be removed or reconfigured inside the existing cabinet frames for a thoroughly modern and updated look.

“With conversion to open shelving there is an opportunity to refinish interiors in another color from the exterior or add beadboard backs,” Lorey says.

Don’t forget the dead air space underneath upper shelves — it’s a smart place to stash mugs, dessert plates, baking sheets and other compact kitchen items. The Container Store offers under-cabinet shelving in vinyl-coated wire that adds usable real estate to existing cabinets without taking up any extra space in your kitchen.

The design style you choose for your kitchen cabinets determines the tone and style for your entire kitchen.

Installing lighting on cabinets isn’t just a practical improvement. It can make the whole room glow, especially if you take a multi-directional approach. This kitchen features uplighting from energy-efficient LED tape on the top cabinets, and task lighting from LED under-cabinet fixtures on the bottom cabinet, both from Kichler.

Kichler recommends dimmable task lighting for the kitchen so that you can make it as bright as necessary for doing prep work but dial it down for evening mood-setting.

Your first step in refacing the cabinets is to attach clean plywood to the exposed cabinet sides. After cleaning and sanding the sides, apply the correctly sized plywood piece with carpenter’s glue. Secure the plywood with finish nails, sink the nail heads, then fill the holes with wood filler.

What about a mix-and-match option, where some existing cabinets are rehabbed while others are completely replaced? Experts say this is a practical and cost-saving option many homeowners overlook. “We often leave original glass upper cabinet doors and replace just the base cabinets to improve functionality,” says Lorey.

Custom kitchens have lots of built-in features to add functionality, but there’s no reason you can’t have the same perks on a budget. Roll-out shelves for bottom cabinets are a must — these sturdy bamboo drawers from The Container Store are easy to install with just a screwdriver or drill.

However, even if your original cabinets are solidly built and in good condition, refacing or converting to open shelving may not be the best option if your current cabinet design or layout isn’t efficient or functional.

If the cabinets you have now aren’t deep enough to hold your saucepans or tall enough to accommodate your cookie trays, replacing them completely may be the better option. “If a homeowner is looking for major design or layout changes, those can be better achieved by starting over,” says Gary Reynolds.

The perfect doors for your kitchen cabinets set the tone of the entire room.

When refacing the cabinets, consider freshening up the interiors too. They can be sanded, painted or veneered for a completely new look. Adding handy functionality, like pull-out drawers and rotating shelves, is another great option.

With some chicken wire and white chalk paint, craft blogger Amy Gregson transformed her builder-grade oak cabinets into her dream farmhouse kitchen. “It really lightened the space up and gave it a ton of personality,” she says.

“It makes me smile every time I walk in there!” See how she did it here; since the original blog post was written, she has painted the lower cabinets navy blue and installed bright-white countertops (shown).

Even with the potential cost-savings, however, refacing isn’t right for every kitchen remodel. Before making the decision to reface, rather than replace, homeowners need to consider a number of factors, starting with the “bones” of their current kitchen cabinets.

“If they are not high-quality cabinets to begin with, it usually makes more sense to replace the entire piece,” says Deborah Ramos, an interior designer in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Next, apply the veneer you’ve chosen. The key here is to measure properly, and then go slowly when applying. First, measure the stiles (vertical frame) and rails (horizontal frame). Then use a straightedge and a utility knife to cut the veneer into strips that are ½ inch wider and 2 inches longer than each stile and rail. Cut the veneer so the wood grain always runs lengthwise. Hold the veneer strip up to a stile and align it so it overlaps all edges, then peel away the self stick backing and press the veneer into place, slowly working down the stile. Smooth the veneer with a wood block or other flat, hard object to work out any air bubbles.

Lighten up a heavy, closed-off kitchen by converting your ordinary cabinets to open shelving. The kitchen shown belongs to blogger Judy Meek, who first tried open shelving in 2011 and documented her steps for her readers.

“I have loved the open shelf concept,” Meek says. “Besides the open shelf over the peninsula, I’ve also opened up a shelf over the dishwasher for glasses, a shelf over the coffeemaker for cups and a long cabinet over our cooktop for our everyday dinnerware.

The key is filling the shelves with items you use often.” Meek started by painting her oak cabinets white, and is now changing over to Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ with wax, which makes spill cleanup a snap.

The backside of a kitchen cabinet door is a space with great potential that’s too often wasted. A spice rack is an ideal way to put it to use — it frees up the inside of the cabinet and keeps all those tiny bottles neat and readable at eye level.

Designer Jan Goldman of Kitchen Elements had this cabinet custom-made for her client, but there are lots of prefab wall-mounted options available designed specifically for spice storage.

Pots and their lids are great partners on the stove, but inside the kitchen cabinet, not so much. Get a handle on the havoc and make your cabinets more functional by storing lids on the door with a minimalist rack like this steel model from The Container Store.

Next, use your utility knife to trim the excess veneer from the sides of the stile or rail. When trimming at the joint between two cabinets, use a straightedge as a guide.
