Mount Mary University’s accredited interior design program has a reputation for excellence among employers, students and peers across the country. Our program provides you with the skills you’ll need to succeed: skills in space planning, problem solving, contract preparation and material preparation. You’ll also learn how to work with professionals such as architects, engineers and building contractors.In the classroom and labs, you’ll access the latest industry standard software, including AutoCAD, Revit and SketchUp. The interior design program has a dedicated computer drafting lab and product resource library.Faculty also work closely with design communities and industry partners and practitioners to create networking opportunities for you to meet professionals in class and through student organization activities. Industry experts often bring their experience to class and field trips are infused throughout the program.Many class projects consist of real spaces, are performed for actual clients and are juried by interior design practitioners. You get even more practical, real-world experience through a required internship.

The entrepreneurship minor is designed for non-business majors who wish to learn how to start a business in their chosen field. The minor is helpful if you want to start your own interior design business. The minor requires a minimum of 21 credits and can be earned in the traditional daytime or accelerated formats. Flexible class schedules — day, evening, or accelerated formats — combined with individual face-to-face time with your professors will prepare you to advance professionally, and to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing workplace.

Mount Mary’s interior design program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation and has been continually accredited since 1986. After completing your four-year bachelor’s degree and two years of experience, you will be eligible to take the National Council for Interior Designers Qualification (NCIDQ) Exam to become certified as a professional interior designer.

Interior Design —This accredited program prepares you to become a certified professional interior designer, and also emphasizes Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) techniques. Interior Merchandising —This program prepares you to become a professional within the sales and marketing sector of the built environment profession.

The interior design department offers many opportunities to get involved in professional organizations, service learning activities, networking opportunities and other student organizations.

Mount Mary offers an accredited four-year Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design degree. An internship is required for all interior design students. The program requires a minimum of 75 credits of interior design courses. You also need to complete the university’s core curriculum requirements. Consult the Undergraduate Bulletin (PDF) and Curriculum Guide list for more details on requirements and courses for this major. Some academic programs require a GPA higher than what is required for general admission to Mount Mary University. Contact your admission counselor for more information.

In addition to academic scholarships, interior design and merchandising majors at Mount Mary may qualify an art-specific scholarship. To apply, fill out an application for the Layton Art Scholarship. Incoming freshmen and current students majoring interior design and other art-related majors can apply each year for these scholarships of up to $3,000. Every client comes with different needs, and it’s important as a designer to be able to think on your feet and come up with creative solutions.

Job Placement:  Based on the 2014 to 2016 graduates, 75% are employed within 6 months of graduation. 83% of graduates are employed in an interior design related position. Acceptance into Graduate Programs: 100% of graduates from 2002-current who applied to graduate school were accepted.

Graduation Rates: 80% of the students from the class of May 2014 graduated in 4 years.  Those that did not were double majors, change of major, or transfer students. Retention/Attrition: 85% of the students enrolled during the Fall 2015 to Fall 2016 semesters returned to the program, putting attrition at 15%.
