In actress Minnie Driver’s Hollywood home, the living room has a generous dose of vintage fabrics and patterns. The curtains and the shades come in complementary colors, and almost-matching patterns, which add a dynamic twist without overwhelming the already pattern-filled room. While the shades are heavy and designed to block sunlight, the curtains remain sheer and airy.

This Connecticut country house isn’t afraid of color, and the patterned curtains are no exception. In the dining area, a Richard Wrightman table is surrounded by Indian cane chairs, the striped dhurries are by Robshaw, and the armchair in the background and its fabric are by Robshaw for Duralee.

Curtain rails often get overlooked when in fact they offer the perfect opportunity to make a striking design statement. In this scheme by House & Garden decoration director Gabby Deeming a coral design – reminiscent of the artist Matisse’s paper cuts – has been applied to a pale wool curtain.

In a Long Island home, the family room’s custom furnishings include a sofa upholstered in a Lee Jofa fabric, a tufted sofa in a Chapas Textiles weave, a leather ottoman and a pair of armchairs covered in a Kravet linen blend; the 1950s cerused-oak side table and 19th-century copper lantern are French, the curtains are of a Home Couture fabric and the wallpaper is by Phillip Jeffries.

This blind is an unstiffened roller in ‘Wheat Ears and Scrolls Border’, £580 a metre, an embroidered cotton panel from Chelsea Textiles. ‘It is particularly pretty with the light coming through, which is good for a bathroom,’ says designer Emma Burns of Sybil Colefax & John Fowler.

Some of you are probably reluctant to get curtains because you do love the bare window look, but sometimes you have to have something. So before you toss out the shades option, think on it. Shades can be very classy when they’re colored gray. You can pull them up to give the illusion of curtain-less windows during the day and shut them at night for your desired privacy. It’s an especially good option for city dwellers who must have window treatments but can’t abide curtains themselves. Dip-dye is a subtle and stylish way to work a colour into a scheme. The soft coral in the curtains adds a hint of vibrancy to this neutral living room. Hanging a curtain in front of an outside door performs three functions: it helps to keep draughts under control, offers the option of extra privacy and adds a decorative touch to an otherwise purely functional hallway. The printed leaf motif shown here echoes the plants in the garden and on the console table, blurring the boundary between outside and in.

Bright curtains add colour to the otherwise main bedroom in the Virginia home of artist Anne Massie. The fabric is Penny Morrison’s bold ‘Haveli’ linen, custom dyed Annie’s favourite shade of pink.

A bank of floor-to-ceiling windows in this house in the West Country has been dressed by designer Hugh Henry, of Mlinaric, Henry & Zervudachi, in cream linen for a look of understated grandeur. For similar, ask for a hand-gathered heading with soft stand-up and a length that ‘breaks’ on the floor.

Thinking about the basics of modern decorating, you obviously lean heavily on black and white in all your decor decisions. White is definitely a good choice for window treatments for several reasons. One, they are classic and they’ll match anything and everything you use to decorate your home with. Two, being white, they’ll bring the coziness to your home that all curtains do while staying rather out of sight against your window. Three, you can easily find white curtains in several different knits. So if you prefer sheer curtains, you can find white ones at reasonable prices.

At the 2017 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Palm Beach, designer Nick Olsen anchored an eclectic modernist sitting room with Sonateet Claire de Lune, a dreamy Lurçat tapestry from the 1940s inspired by the Debussy piece. The bright yellow curtains pick up the pale sunny tones in the tapestry.

In an Ibiza home, local-limestone floors covered in custom Spanish esparto rugs from Antonia Molina, walls in a sandy lime plaster, and a wood-beam ceiling set a rustic tone in the living room. Custom sofas by Atelier Tapissier Seigneur and curtains in a quilted Braquenié fabric; the Oeil cocktail table by Pierre Chapo is vintage, the lacquered-coral sculpture is by Maurizio Epifani, and the painting over the mantel is by Alex Katz.

In the great room of Cathryn Collins’ home, a row of French doors affords panoramic views of the Hudson Valley. The couple’s French spaniel, Georgie, rests on a custom velvet sofa. Collins purchased the antique console, wooden chest, and wingback chairs on trips to Italy. The 19th-century limestone columns are from New Delhi, the custom lanterns and laurel reed–and-leather rug are from Morocco, the pendant above the sofa was fashioned from an antique Italian tole lantern, and the curtains are of a Jim Thompson fabric.

Do you prefer to go dark with your curtains? Black is definitely an option. But the nice part about dark curtains is that the color isn’t immediately obvious. Darkly colored curtains allow you to choose deep blue or shady greens without making a color statement in your living room. In the master suite of an Upper East Side home, the curtains in this monochromatic blue room perfectly match the decor. The armchairs are a 1950s Gianfranco Frattini design and the painting is by Friedrich Kunath.

The lively patterned curtains in this living room add a playful yet sophisticated touch to a glamorous São Paulo duplex, evoking the same collected spirit as the Moroccan Berber rug and the Jean Prouvé chair by Vitra.

For this pelmet and curtains, designer Hugh Leslie chose a plain textured linen and inset a decorative braid for detail. The central pleat on the pelmet prevents the whole thing from looking too flat. A design where the central third of the pelmet is longer than the sides also looks good.

These antique linen curtains have an unusual shirred pencil-pleat heading, which is created using shirring tape. The result is a pleasingly gathered look that is similar to – but softer than – a plain pencil pleat. Parna is a great source for antique linen, from £60 for a 208 x 126cm sheet.

Maybe you can’t decide which colors would be best in your home. You’re in luck. Color block window treatments are definitely an option in modern decorating. Whether you choose two toned curtains in classic shades or add in a bright pop of color to bring out your complimentary tones, the color block style will bring some interest to your space and allow for you to swap decor much more easily.(Images via 1, 2, 3)
