At CIT, Interior Architecture covers the spectrum of industry specialisms. It involves the initial design and plan for use to accommodate a changed purpose, or a significantly revised design for adaptive reuse of the building shell. It considers structural adaption, sustainable redevelopment strategies, use of light, air movement, ventilation, horizontal/ vertical circulation, and servicing. The practice of Interior Architecture responds to multiple user needs and a wider social responsibility.

Graduates from our BA in Interior Architecture and Design will be entitled to Associate Membership of the Institute of Designers in Ireland.

Suitably qualified graduates are eligible to apply for a postgraduate degree, MSc in Interior Architecture, at CIT.

Exciting design projects including: residential, hospitality, cultural, exhibition, community design, conservation, restoration, furniture and lighting design Multi-disciplinary, collaborative projects with students from other design disciplines such as Architectural Design, Fine Art, Creative Design, Theatre Design and Advanced Wood and Sustainable Technology.

High contact time with tutors Annual Field trips to design capitals: Amsterdam,Barcelona, Berlin, London, Milan, Rome, Stockholm and Venice. Student exhibitions and design competitions

This mainly studio based course is taught through formal lectures and tutorials. It has a significant amount of time allocated to studio and project work. There is a high technical input, supplementing the design drawing and presentation content.

Interior Architecture and Design is a creative and progressive discipline which explores new and exciting ways to create interior environments which inspire and enrich the lives of those who use them. It is a profession which touches upon a variety of associated disciplines including, architecture, furniture, lighting, product, graphic design, set design and fine art.

This course is accredited by the European Council of Interior Architects (ECIA).

Her BSc (Honours) in Interior Architecture has provided her with the unique set of knowledge and skills necessary in achieving successful interior architectural designs.

At present, there is no direct work placement period in the course. However, students are encouraged to work in relevant industry during their summer vacations. Through the EU Erasmus Programme, there is a student exchange agreement with the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, that may provide the opportunity to complete part of the course work there.

Our Interior Architecture and Design programme has evolved as a distinct but somewhat complimentary course of study to our highly regarded BA (Hons) in Architectural Design RIBA Part 1 programme which has been running since 1998. The two programmes share an experienced staff team of designers, some resources and a common visionof design and architecture which prioritises the following issues-

The graduate will be proficient in the master-planning, spatial design and the materiality of complex interior schemes that involve multiple floors and mixed uses. The graduate is also oriented to commercial architectural practice with a strong understanding of sustainable design. The graduate will be able to develop designs and their attendant working drawings, and will deal with contractors, suppliers, and local authorities. The graduate may also select self-employmnet after a suitable period of practical experience.

Interior Architecture involves the design of interiors of buildings, their layout and space planning, fitting, technical and structural resolution, furnishing and decoration, and the preparation of all technical drawings and written documentation necessary for the carrying out of the work.

Non Standard Applicants may be called for interview and must present a portfolio demonstrating creative ability. Appropriate graduates from other programmes must apply directly to The Registrar’s Office of IT Sligo. Mature students apply through the CAO and will be called for interview. A request for supplementary information will be made including certified transcript of previous results. Places may be awarded based on this supplementary information.

CIT offers full-time, part-time and specialist courses in Art, Business and Humanities, Computing and Information Technology, Engineering, Media, Music, Nautical Studies, and Science.

Students who achieve a 70% average overall in the BA in Interior Architecture and Design Level 7 course may be eligible to transfer into Year 4 of our BA (Honours) in Interior Architecture Level 8 course.

This course qualifies graduates to work in architectural practice, interior design firms, and allied disciplines in the capacity of Interior Architect as a designer with a developed area of focus and expertise or in entry management positions.

Info re CIT Mathematics Exam only: Some students who apply to CIT courses may not achieve the required entry standard in Mathematics through the Leaving Certificate. For such applicants, CIT offers a second chance to reach the required entry standard through a CIT Mathematics Exam. This second chance facility allows applicants (depending on their results in the CIT Mathematics Examination) to gain entry to courses with an Ordinary Leaving Certificate Mathematics entry standard, and (with a higher level of performance) courses with a Higher Leaving Certificate entry standard. Our programme gives students the opportunity to develop a broad range of transferable skills and design understanding that will enable them to work worldwide in many different contexts. Many graduates will go straight into design practice while others choose to pursue further academic study in areas of architecture, interiors, furniture design and conservation of historic buildings.

Applicants should list their CAO course choices in genuine order of preference and they will be offered the course highest up on their list that they are deemed eligible for, if any.

All applicants must apply through the CAO system. CAO applicants who are applying in the year of their Leaving Certificate are awarded a place based on Leaving Certificate points. The requirement for entry to the Bachelor of Arts in Interior Architecture and Design is six subjects at Leaving Certificate level. A limited number of places will be offered to mature students (over 23yrs of age) and graduates and transfers from other third level programmes. Students applying from outside the Republic of Ireland must demonstrate equivalency.

Suitably qualified graduates are eligible to apply for entry to Year 4 (final) of > Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Interior Architecture, subject to availability of places.

Interior Architecture and Design graduates work in a variety of environments including architectural practice, in-house and freelance design for retail, public spaces, leisure environments, contract interiors and workspaces. There are also opportunities in exhibition design, TV and film, lighting design, visualisation, 3D modelling and point of purchase design.

How much of your time is devoted to studio/project work? Approximately 50% of time is devoted to studio and project work.

Am I qualified as an Interior Designer? This programme is designed to graduate candidates who will practice in Interior Architecture which includes interior design.

This course examines contemporary practice in interior architecture and teaches you about our architectural heritage, how buildings work, and how to create high quality spatial experiences.

As Project Manager, Emma’s role takes her from project initiation to final completion working on client objectives, schematics, design development, bidding, construction drawings, permitting, and overall involvement throughout the construction phase of a project.

Emma Gibbons Architectural DesignerSince 2015, Emma has worked at the award winning Architectural Design firm Geiszler Architects in San Francisco, specialising in highend custom residential and commercial design.

The design work of the Interior Architect includes domestic, commercial, leisure, retail, educational, and healthcare interior projects. Interior architectural design encompasses many types of interiors and utilises accompanying skills.

The new Leaving Certificate Common Points Scale from 2017 is not directly comparable with the scale that was in existence from 1992 to 2016.

What is the difference between Interior Architecture and Architectural Technology? Interior Architecture includes aesthetic design of all interior aspects of a building including technical resolution. Architectural Technology can be described as technical design.

Students who achieve a 40% average overall in the BA in Interior Architecture and Design Level 7 course may be eligible to transfer into Year 3 of our BA (Honours) in Interior Architecture Level 8 course.

The design work of the Interior Architect includes domestic, commercial, leisure, retail, educational and healthcare interior projects. Interior architectural design encompasses many types of interiors and utilises accompanying skills.

Breeda works with Houseworks Cork as a Senior Designer. Working exclusively with SieMatic Kitchens, Breeda began work with six months post-qualification training in Dublin, before joining the Cork showrooms as its only designer. Breeda has earned a wealth of experience in dealing with private and commercial projects alike. Her work ranges from presenting the SieMatic range in the showroom to preparing detailed design layouts for prospective clients.

Leaving Certificate in six subjects i.e. H5 in two subjects, and O6/H7 in four other subjects. The six subjects must include Mathematics, and either English or Irish.

It stands at the intersection of Architecture, design of the built environment, sustainability, and conservation. Unlike interior design, it is architecture within the confines of an existing building. As such, the course, requires a level of technical competence to compare with that of the architect, as the responsibilities to the client and community are similar.

Modules in the award stage of the Honours Degree will include a comprehensive Design Project, as well as research which will provide the student opportunity to focus and develop an expertise in an area or Buidling Typology.

Most helpful subjects are: Art, Construction Studies, and Design and Communication Graphics.
