A room’s focal point is its most emphasized feature. It’s the thing your eyes are naturally drawn to when you walk into the room. And everything around the focal point compliments it.

They also have one more product called Swedish Home Planner on the App Store  – this program is kind the same, but with Ikea furniture items.

Sometimes, less is more. In design, the negative space is the area that’s not taken up by any subject. Most commonly, this is the white area on your walls. Its tempting to fill every space with a subject, but sometimes, the negative space speaks for itself. Apartment Therapy explains:

The decorating section of the BetterHomes website is stuffed with practical inspiration, professional tips, and do-it-yourself projects that will have your home converted in no time.

And continue from there! By doing this, you’ll start to recognize different styles, and you’ll be able to pick them out when you see them. You’ll learn what you like, and it’ll help you be able to decorate your home the way you want, and have it look stunning too!

This type of questioning of self is exhausting, usually, especially for those out of practice, and can be done in spurts if necessary. As the answers come, they should be recorded in some manner so they stay nearby.

When you already have your focal point, try not to put anything beside it. Make sure that the focal point should be free and clear from one room to the next, so it will give you an illusion that you’re being drawn between them.

The feedback you provide will help us show you more relevant content in the future.

The climate also impacts the colors that will work. A terra cotta room at the end of summer in the afternoon in a hot area will not be nice, no matter how beautiful it is, and even if you are cold-natured (assuming there is someone in your life who you want to have over who is not cold-natured).

Having a theme is good. In fact, this adds beauty to your home. However, if you overdone and tend to be too theme-y, it can make your home look chaotic and lack of individuality. In choosing the right theme, you should know what thing that can give good vibes on the place.

Which other tools, courses and resources have you found helpful for your interior design projects? Have you tried any of those mentioned above?

Some people are born with a great eye for decorating or design. Others learn the skill and are able to apply it successfully. And then there are the rest of us. If you don’t have much of a knack for design, a few basic techniques can go a long way.

The places we end up living may or may not be our first choice at the moment. And  the function of the place we live in may be different from that of another person. For instance, someone who drives a city bus, but is an introvert, will likely need a sanctuary. The extroverted mailroom clerk, who has fifteen friends over every weekend to watch a game and get recharged, likely needs an entertainment hub.

It helps to have groupings of objects in varying heights, shapes and textures. At the same time, there should be something similar about them. This advice seems to contradict itself, but the point is, there should be something that groups your items together, but also something about each of them that is slightly different.

Region. I’m serious! We are inhabitants of more than a few rooms.

These decorating rules and principles are simple enough that most anyone can apply them. Your home might not look like a West Elm catalogue, but it’ll look presentable.

If you’d like to learn a bit of interior design in order to be able to improve your own home decor, I reckon the easiest way is to emulate what you like that’s done in other people’s home. By virtue of the laws of nature, a picture will begin to form about the space you are creating. It will happen before your eyes, amazingly. But not necessarily quickly. Impatient decorating is painful to endure, while a space that is being put together over time with available resources and according to the peace of the owner will transmit joy.

In the list of suggested videos below, we’ve also linked to a couple that are not in that playlist, but which deserve to be.

Front on: Many designers choose to just put the two front feet on the rug. This can tie everything together and create a feeling of openness.

Beyond these basics, you’ll probably also want to make your home look like your own. We’ve got some tips on how to do that, too. These guidelines help you get started, but you should adjust your decorating according to your own tastes and preferences. Use these rules to get started, but don’t be afraid to break them and go with your instincts if something feels right to you.

To help you wrap your mind around these basic rules and more intricate ingredients of great interior design, the following free courses and resources will set you on the right path.

When you feel ready to take the plunge into your next interior design project, there are a number of other free online resources that’ll help make your life a lot easier.

One thing that gives a great impact to home design is on how you arrange your furniture. Basically, there are three ways to arrange your furniture on a rug: 1.) If the rug is large, you can place all of the furniture legs on top of it. This will create a more luxurious feel. 2.) If you have a smaller room, try to keep all legs off the rug. This is best when you are layering a pattern over a larger solid or texture rug. 3.) Just put the front feet of all your seating pieces on the rug. This will create a well-defined space while having a feeling of openness.

One thing that you should avoid when decorating your home is overcrowding. Especially when you have so many furnishings at home, you need to think about how you can achieve the desired space to maneuver with ease. Avoid filling up your space on your room with furniture – it will only look messy and crowded.

The app is available online on Home Design Software & Interior Design Tool ONLINE for home & floor plans in 2D & 3D and for Android devices: Planner 5D – Interior Design – Android Apps on Google Play

There are some useful tools, as for example Planner 5D. It says, that it does not require any special skills or trainings. It’s free to download, but with possibility to upgrade for premium. Anyways, at least you can try out the free version with making simple floor plans and interior design with available free items.

As you can see, there’s a deep wealth of information available online to help you learn about interior design. The above resources are among the best we came across.

Again, most all of these sources add one big caveat: don’t be afraid to break these rules. They don’t always work, but they’re good guidelines to follow.

Before you start decorating, think about these things. What do you want for your home? Do the furnishings match the theme? Is it necessary for you to include such design? How will you do the arrangements? Or are there anything else you may want to have? knowing these things may be simple, but it plays a big role in achieving the desirable outcome. Well, you might also want to try these interior design tips below.

The perspectives involved are 1) From the outside, in; 2) From inside yourself, out.

All off: If you have a smaller space, you might choose a smaller rug, and then you’d leave all four feet of your furniture off of it. Houzz adds, “You don’t want to pick too small a rug, though, or it may look insignificant, like an afterthought.”

The center point is the core of your room’s layout. It doesn’t have to be the exact middle of the room, although that’s the case in many homes. The center point of a living room is where the coffee table or center table will sit, with seating arranged around it.

Walker points out that this is just a basic rule, and it might not work in every instance. But if this grouping doesn’t look right to you, go with your gut. The goal here is to make sure everything isn’t uniform, and by extension, boring.

You can also frame it. In the photo, the vases, windows and sofas serve this purpose. A fireplace is easy to frame, as it usually comes with a mantle. You can add decor on or above the mantle. If your focal point is a large window with a view, you might arrange your furniture to frame it. If it’s a large mirror or an interesting piece of artwork, you might frame it with two smaller elements on either side, like this:

The climate of your surroundings should be considered. It’s hard to have a “rich, traditional setting with leather bound books forming a library on two walls” when the climate is wet and you have no dehumidifying device.

That said, you’d still need to know some basics. You could visit Contemporary Interior Design – Corporate, Home, Retail to get yourself started.

All on: If a rug is big enough, you can put all legs of your furniture on top of it. But you should leave 12-18″ of floor surface on all four sides of the rug, says decorating site Houzz.

Lighting could be a whole post in itself, but here’s what you should consider when you don’t know much about it. First, learn the three basic types of lighting:

Avoid clutter. This is probably the best and most common way to make the most of negative space. A bunch of stuff might fit perfectly on your table, but that doesn’t mean it all needs to go there. Leave some room—some negative space.

Be intentional. Make sure the negative space serves a purpose. You might leave a space empty to highlight a decorated area nearby. Or maybe the negative space creates an interesting design.Look at shapes.

SF Gate’s Home Guides explains that two contrasting shapes can create an odd—or interesting—negative space. “a curved coffee table can soften the harsh negative space lines created by angular sofas and chairs in a square room.

But this space plan may not work in smaller rooms, which would force edge of the round table too close to the sofa for comfortable sitting.”

Interior design is a lot of fun to learn. There are many ways to go about doing it, but I think the easiest thing to do is to first use it to find your own personal design style. This way, you learn about many different styles, and you don’t get overwhelmed!

Further, get rid of clutter. So, do have ample storage space.

This particular process can be a bit frightening, but even if it is it cannot be avoided if the place is to be right.

Generally, knowing what and what not to do when it comes to decorating your home is a must. Although this may be a challenging for most of us, having an impressive Home Design result would be a reward for us.

What activity will you be doing in the space for most of the hours? Besides sleeping?

Decide to what degree your larger habitation will affect your personal space. If green, from leaves all around, tints the light in your space certain hours of the day, decide if you like that or if you want to keep out the color some way. If you live near a body of water and want to bring in that influence because you like it, think about how much to allow it in. You may want to ignore the presence of the shore; if so, you can find a way to minimize its influence on your space.

Paint one wall a different color, then accessorize with artwork or shelves, says interior designer Coral Nafie.Decide what you want to use the room for, then create a focal point around that, says The Inspired Room.

For example, if you want to use a room for reading, you’d make a bookshelf your focal point.Nafie also suggests simply using a large piece of furniture as a focal point. You could use a large piece of artwork as a focal point.

A large mirror also works well.

Decorating with negative space can be a bit complicated, but there are a few ways anyone can do it:

Each section of the course also includes some basic exercises to help you think through the content, and allow it to sink in that bit more. This is a quick and quality way to grasp the basics of interior design before moving on to something a little more in depth.

Here’s an order of thinking of a place that may serve to help:

Design is only one aspect of achieving the perfect home. Decorating is equally as important.

The basic idea of the rule is that details and objects that are arranged or grouped in odd numbers are more appealing, memorable, and effective than even-numbered pairings.

In writing, sentences often contain extra words that without, the sentence would sound just fine. Train yourself to look for those moments in your own home. Is there a narrow wall with a small blot of art that when taken down, would still look like a fine wall? Is there a tabletop with a fledgling vignette that would look just as spectacular if cleared off?

Coffee table distance: Keep at least 15″ between coffee tables and sofas, says decorator Maria Killam. Apartment Therapy suggests leaving about 18″ between them.Hanging art: When hanging art, keep its center at eye level, which is generally 56″ to 60″ from the floor, says Driven By Decor.

If you’re hanging multiple pieces of art, keep the center point of the whole arrangement at this level. When hanging art above your sofa, make sure it’s no more than 2/3 the width of the sofa. You’ll also want to leave 5-9″ of space between the art and the furniture, Driven By Decor adds.

Hanging curtains: Crate and Barrel says it’s typical to have 1-3″ of overlap on either side of your window. For height, they say you should mount curtain rods 4″ from the top of the window. But maybe you want your windows to look wider or taller.

To create the illusion of height, Real Simple says you can go beyond the 4″ standard, but don’t exceed 8″, or it’ll look awkward. To create the illusion of width, feel free to break the 1-3″ standard, too.

You might want to go as far as 12″ on either side. TV distance: How far your TV should be from your sofa will depend on its size. We’ve talked about viewing distance before. The easiest rule of thumb: multiply the diagonal size of your TV by two.

That’s about how many inches your tv should be from your seating area.

Ambient: Its also called general lighting, and its the overhead lighting meant to evenly illuminate a room.Task: As its name suggests, task lighting is meant to light a specific task. A lamp in the living room might light a reading area.

Under-cabinet lights in a kitchen serve as task lights for countertops.Accent: Accent lights are meant to highlight a particular object. You might see them on painting, for example.

You might already be familiar with the rule of thirds for photography. Designing with odd numbers as a foundation can create harmony and visual interest, explains designer Cecilia Walker:

If you’re lost with how to start decorating a room, finding its focal point is a good start. Many rooms have built-in focal points: a large window with a view, for example, or a fireplace. If your room doesn’t have a built-in focal point, here are some tips and options for creating one:

DecoratingStudio may not have the best website decor, but it sure has some great content on decorating your home. First, look at your space. Any room you have. Think about how you would want to decorate it. Do you want to paint the walls a certain color, have a specific type of curtain, a cool lamp even? Do you want it to be full of crazy furniture, or very simplistic? Write it down. Go through your whole house this way. It doesn’t matter at this point if you don’t know the style name, or the color. Just describe it. All you need to do is have it all down.

You will have the different ideas related to the interior designing. Like flooring design, furniture and all that. You can subscribe it and also can follow it to have the updates.

“A beautifully decorated interior not only functions well, but it also creates a mood or feeling and shows off the personality of the family that lives there. It’s attention to these three important ingredients — function, mood and personality — that ensures decorating success”.

Interior design is widely considered to be a pretty subjective matter. But that’s not to say there’s no distinction between good design and bad design. For instance, if you want a certain room to elicit a certain emotion and it fails to deliver, you’ve designed it badly. As Shari Hiller states:,

Once you have thought through the outside, in, and have a good idea of how those influences will be dealt with, proceed to think through what you like. These two thinking-through parts can be done simultaneously or in the other order, whatever keeps your steam up.

As we all know designing a home can be challenging and daunting. Unless you are an expert on interior decorating, this requires you a lot of thinking and planning. Basically, a good foundation of an impressive home design is on how you perceive your home would look like. Having a picture in mind of what you want to do with your home is a must to prevent any costly mistakes. Naturally, none of us would like to waste our effort, time and most importantly our money. Right?

And when you’re ready to work on your home decor, you could go to Best Renovation Tips for House, Kitchen, Bathroom to get useful tips on home renovation (there’re 200 of them).

Once you have a focal point, a center point helps balance the room. Apartment Therapy explains:

Houzz is a 35-million member community, helping you remodel and design your home. Being a largely visually-oriented site, there are a huge number of curated interior photos (which you can easily save) to act as inspiration. There’s also a wealth of blog posts covering design topics, case studies, and tours of well-designed homes.

When it comes to hanging curtains or arranging furniture, most of us just eyeball it as we go. But there are specific measurements for decorating that make a room look better. Here are a few general measurements to keep in mind:

Now this is the part you’ve been waiting for. You can literally google interior design blogs and get tons of hits. Then, you just start looking! Houzz is a great one we love. Don’t narrow your search to only one place, though. Explore. Find blogs on minimalim, contemporary decor, rustic decor, whatever you can find. This is the fun part. You get to explore the internet finding design blogs. What could be cooler? The point to this is to scroll through the blog, and go “oh, I like that chair! Why do I like that chair?” and figure out if the chair is contemporary, rustic, modern, etc. If you find things you love, add them to that handy dandy list you made. Anything from color schemes to curtains, add what you love to the list.

The Design 101 section of HGTV is a treasure trove of information about, and ideas for, contemporary interior design. Be sure to look out for the “read more” link on the relevant pages, as these can often go unnoticed.  At the bottom of each “class” page, there’s also a “We Recommend” section which suggests other relevant content to bulk out your knowledge of a certain area.

The navigation around each of the guides isn’t the most streamlined, but the actual content — a mix of images, videos, slideshows, and text — is all worthwhile.

Just because you have a collection that does not mean it is also necessary for you to display such. Of course, you should choose the things that are impressive enough for you to include on the decoration. Perhaps, you can unify the theme to match on the things that you want to have at home.

Having a focal point is an important factor to consider. It can give a dramatic feeling, which draws attention in your room. When deciding on the focal point, choose a thing that can easily grab the attention or interest of a person. Perhaps, you can have an antique table place on the center of your living room.

We hope these will offer you the basics of interior design principles, some funky ideas, plenty of inspiration, and a ton of practical advice and guidance to build your confidence when it comes to tackling your own home.

To clarify, it’s not just about looking for places where you can remove things. It’s about looking for spots that look great even when they’re empty. It’s also about considering the function of the empty spaces between subjects.

Now that you have made your huge list, go back over it while thinkng about what you need from the space. Maybe you have contradicting ideas. Maybe you decided you don’t really want the whole room purple because it would be distracting. Whatever it is, just go back through the list and remove anything you don’t really need. Focus on the space itself, and what you need the space to be. For example, you might want your living room to be able to hold lots of people for gatherings and conversation. You will need lots of seating, and an open area for people to move around in. So, probably won’t want hammocks instead of couches and chairs. See? Just go through all your ideas like that to narrow it down. You can keep those ideas for later, of course, but for now, go with what you need.

One thing I’d like to point out is the design of every part of your home should be congruent in order for the house to look pleasant as a whole. Imagine a house with a modern living room, a country styled kitchen, and Victorian bedrooms – you get the idea. However, it shouldn’t be too uniform, otherwise your living space would be a bore. Thus, having a good balance is essential.

If you think picking the right color is easy, then you better think again. There are actually thousands of paint colors with different tints, tones, and shades. And each color will vary from home to home. That means, the color that looks good in your previous home might not look the same with your new home. Make sure that the color will complement with your upholstery, artwork, rug and other things in your home.

Each of the videos has been created by a different user, so there is some overlap the the content, but taking the time to watch a couple of these will give you a handle on the fundamentals when it comes to sketching a room design by hand.

Adding different types lighting can give your room dimension. Start with ambient lighting in each room, then consider how you can use task and accent lighting. Real Simple has some specific tips on how to do this in each room.

Generally, artworks can improve the look of your home – that if it is properly displayed. If you are planning to include your favorite artwork, make sure to hang it at the mid-line (center) of each piece is m-57 inches to 60 inches from the floor. When you have a higher room, then you should also hang your artworks higher. But always remember, the height of your artwork should relate to human scale, and not the structure’s scale.

Once you find the focal point, decorate around it. Use its main color in elements throughout the rest of the room. In the above example, the focal point—the fireplace—is white. The red walls make its color stand out, and the white candles, orchid and vases all around the room compliment the fireplace.
