Many people believe that a minimalist home isn’t welcoming because it isn’t personal – but that just isn’t true. The whole idea behind minimalism is based on the premise that your home is dedicated to you and your wants. So, when designing and changing your home and space, decide on your wants and needs. It may be that you spend most of your time in your living room, kitchen or bedroom. If this is the case, take note of the objects and areas that you make use of the most and focus on creating your own space that has everything you need – but without going overboard. If you love sitting down for your morning coffee before work, make sure you buy the ultimate coffee table or kitchen unit that you’ll look forward to sitting at each day.

Minimalist homes, with their soothing swathes of empty floor space and serene bare walls, are filling up our Pinterest boards and Instagram feeds these days. Saying good-bye to all of that clutter and investing in just a few beautifully made pieces is enticing, to say the least. But simplifying too much can leave a space feeling cold and inhospitable. Courtney Trump, the principal designer of Lüft Design based in San Francisco, describes her design philosophy as “warm minimalism,” so who better to offer advice on getting it right? Here, she tells us four secrets to designing a clean-lined space that’s still infused with meaning and character.

The best aspect of minimalism is that you can experiment and you can branch out of your comfort zone when searching for furniture. Minimalism is not segregated to just one country, one city or one side of the world – it is a theme that has been adopted across the world, meaning there is a whole world of minimalist ideas to draw from. Research minimalism before you get started on your decorating and see which kind of furniture and ornaments you like and draw from these ideas in your own work. If you want, you can keep it dedicated to one region – or you could branch out and use the ideas of multiple nations’ minimalism to create the ultimate minimalist house.

The whole idea behind minimalism is that everything on display should be neat, tidy and muted – which means an open wardrobe with all of your different colored and patterned clothes hanging our completely contradicts that. This doesn’t mean you have to get rid of all of your clothes (thank goodness). Instead, focus on keeping all of your storage items a secret. Buy simple closed wardrobes, ottoman beds, and chests of drawers that do not draw too much attention to themselves. Don’t worry if you have loads of possessions, there are hundreds of storage facilities that have deep walls and space to store them all!

Smiling is one of those things that we do every day – unless you have a personal vendetta against the world, of course. Sometimes we find…

The art of minimalism is becoming increasingly popular in the process of decorating. With bare walls and light furniture filling up the pages of Pinterest, it can be easy to fall in love with the simple designs and breathable space – with many trying it out on their own homes. However, many people are put off by the idea of minimalism, as they believe their home will be cold, bare and unwelcoming. And sure, if you go too far you’ll just have a stark, empty room (and nobody wants that). But if you do it right, you can create minimalist perfection.

“Minimalists may live with less, but that doesn’t mean forgoing the necessities. Carefully planned spaces can hold vast amounts of storage, freeing us from the weight of excess and allowing us room to contemplate.” This bedroom’s custom closet looks like a piece of furniture from the outside, but it’s actually 30 inches deep with a bumped-back interior wall.

“Our homes and offices are not static environments. They should be unique and fluid, suiting our most basic and demanding physical and emotional needs,” says Trump. “Take time to observe your daily rituals, taking note of how you interact with your space, the objects you use most and those you could potentially eliminate.” For this kitchen, Trump was tasked with crafting a space that was functional but had a sense of calm. She achieved that effect with airy white upper cabinets, minimal hardware, and a custom white-oak dining table where the clients could enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee together.

When decorating your home, it can be easy to purchase everything you like in the department and home stores, and then try and find space for it somewhere amongst the other furniture and clutter. However, this completely defies the minimalist objective. As much as your home needs to be personal, they also have their own needs. Your rooms need to be kept simple and warm – so keep it subtle and clean with muted tones, textured furniture and ornaments and large open spaces. Stray away from filling every inch of the room in clutter – because less really is more.
