The family room in a Connecticut ranch by Summer Thornton is considered to be the “most comfortable in the house.” The mix of patterns gives the space a more informal look.

“The den is where the family lives, so it had to be cozy yet remain elegant,” says Meg Braff of this Long Island Colonial. “I wanted the seating to beg you to sit down.” Lee Industries club chairs are covered in Cowtan & Tout’s Rapallo; the velvet sofa is trimmed in Elysee by Samuel & Sons. The trim is in Benjamin Moore’s Herb Garden.

Lacking on space? Permission to forgo the traditional coffee table/sofa setup. A fireside table is the coziest spot for reading or a casual dinner.

In a Lake Forest, Illinois, house designed by Ruthie Sommers, both sofas and the curtains in the family room are covered in Chenonceaux, an ikat by Brunschwig & Fils. Another bold ikat covers the ottoman. Custom dining chairs by Chapman Radcliff are upholstered in Pierre Frey’s Le Grand Corail. An end table from John Rosselli Antiques is topped with a blue-and-white ginger jar lamp from Hollywood at Home. Sommers designed the large grass cloth–covered coffee table to accommodate everything from stacks of books to cocktails.

Little jolts of orange punctuate the beiges and pale blues in the family room of a Greenwich, Connecticut, house designed by Ashley Whittaker.

Add vibrant color without it overpowering your room by painting bookshelves. It’ll accent the room, but not be the focus of the room.

The mosaic Moroccan tiles are the focal point of this blue-and-white living room. They add an exotic touch to a beach house.

Though the walls and floors in this cottage are neutral, patterned chairs give it a pop. Bright pillows on the sofa add to the tropical feel.

In a Rhode Island house designed by Tom Scheerer, the family room’s sofa pairs Clarence House blue corduroy with seat covers in Peter Dunham’s Samarkand. A bold-patterned Indian rug echoes azure tiles in the kitchen, framed by faux-bois–painted walls and trim in Benjamin Moore’s Linen White.

Shiplap over a fireplace and built-in bookshelves feels cozy and inviting. Beach vibes for days.

Light, bright and varied textures make this family room by Nestor Santa-Cruz the ultimate place to sit back and relax, while taking in a great collection of art.

Family room walls in a Naples, Florida, house designed by Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller are glazed yellow to make “every day feel sunny.” Curtains in Alan Campbell’s Potalla linen-cotton and sofas in Rogers & Goffigon’s Violetta cotton velvet.

In the family room of a pre-war New York City apartment, Sara Story lacquered the walls in an ocean blue color. The shiny walls help bounce light across the space, giving a bright and open feel.

This rustic great room was built to resemble a converted barn. And those windows, though.

A pine mantel frames the cozy hearth in this farmhouse living room. Along with apron sinks, Windsor chairs, and tin sconces, an assortment of baskets ups the home’s rural charm.

If you’ve got tall ceilings, you need a statement chandelier. This modern chandelier picks up the gold accents in the room.

This living room was blessed with original Beaux-Arts plasterwork and parquet, but you can still recreate a French-inspired room at home with a linen-covered bergères and a Louis XVI side table. Vintage curtains and a crystal chandelier complete it.

All the blues in this Atlanta house designed by Kristin Kong started with the vivid fabric on the family room sofa, Kravet’s Venetian. A bookshelf conceals a door to the back stairs. Walls are painted in Kestrel White to contrast with the Mega Greige trim, both by Sherwin-Williams.

“The family room is sports central,” designer Nathan Turner says of client Eric Stonestreet’s Los Angeles house. A custom sectional in Calvin Fabrics’ Antiquity faces an enormous flat-screen television. The Candemir ottoman from Nathan Turner, covered in Elite leather, is tough enough to handle football fans with their feet up, and an original Gustav Stickley armchair strikes a masculine note.

Mac Fabrics’ Hip print on the family room sofas “hides a multitude of sins,” Liza Pulitzer Calhoun says of her Palm Beach house. The coffee table is vintage, and the lamps are repurposed baskets.

The eclectic mix of vintage armchairs, a blue-glass mirror, and a glass-topped rattan side table is total ’70s vibes. With a style like this, the bolder, the better.

It’s what happens when you create a jungle inside a bungalow. No, we’re not just trying to make fetch happen here.

You spend a lot of time in your living room, so it not only needs to look great, but it needs to be functional and comfortable. Blending all three things can be tricky, but we’ve got plenty of ideas to inspire you. Need ideas for other areas too? Our bedroom and bathroom galleries will get you ready for a full house reno!

Mixing a geometric chandelier, plaster sconces, and 1940s French lamps, the tiered illumination in this Florida living room by Jeff Lincoln creates an inviting glow.

An understated palette means you can focus on incredible interior architecture and dramatic statement pieces. Can we talk about those beams, please?

Raw-poplar walls give the feel of “a fisherman’s shack.” We’re forever on island time.

Lily, the French bulldog, sits in one of her favorite spots in the family room of designer Mark D. Sikes’s West Hollywood house.

In a Los Angeles house decorated by Schuyler Samperton, the family room’s sofas and a wing chair, all from Rooms & Gardens, are upholstered in Jasper’s Melaya and Kathryn M. Ireland’s Woven, respectively. Ballard Designs ottoman in a Bolivian textile from L’Aviva Home.

A Moroccan-inspired lounge, which homeowner Justina Blakeney has dubbed Bluhemia, is wallpapered with Aja in Teal, one of her designs for Hygge & West. The sectional is from Jonathan Louis, and the faux sheepskin is from Target.

“I always like a tiny bit of red in a room,” says Kathryn M. Ireland. “It could be on a lampshade or even in a painting.” Here, in a Cape Cod family room, it appears on the tablecloth, in Ireland’s Keltic Stripe linen in Aubergine. It’s also on the seat cushions, in her Wildflowers linen, of the Lloyd Loom chairs. The wallcovering is Ireland’s Duden Lodge in Blue and the floors are painted in Snow Sky by Barry Dixon for C2 Paint.

In a historic New England home designed by Nina Farmer, Holland & Sherry grass cloth covers the family room’s walls; the trim, painted in Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue, complements a vintage sofa upholstered in an indigo Lee Jofa fabric.

Elegant furniture juxtaposed with exposed brick walls feels cool and lived-in. Add statement art to break them up.

Nothing says nautical more than blue, but it can get way too monochromatic, fast. Use varying shades of blue (and even some touches of green) to keep your space more intriguing.

This living room is simple, clean-lined, and inviting, with a little bit of glamour and a lot of comfort. To highlight the architectural details, the moldings are painted in high-gloss white.

In the family room of a Manhattan apartment designed by Miles Redd, a sectional purchased at Christie’s is covered in a blue cotton velvet by Schumacher. The Nobilis Chene faux-bois paper on the walls is hung horizontally for a modern look.

An L-shaped couch not only looks cool, but it makes a corner living area way more functional. To make it stand out even more, choose a bright color.

Create a cozy cottage feel with an intimate grouping of furniture. Also, this vintage root table is everything our wood coffee tables aspire to be.

“I think there’s peace in balance,” says designer Kay Douglass, who furnished the family room of an Atlanta house with two Charlotte chairs and ottomans, two vintage iron coffee tables found at a fair in France, two table lamps and two vintage side tables that belonged to the owners — lacquered in Orange Spice to give them new life.

To up farmhouse vibes, install shiplap. Joanna Gaines would totally approve.

Dark beams add contrast to high and light ceilings. Add a gothic-inspired chandelier to ground it even more.

The trompe l’oeil paintings, such as the scrolls that frame the windows in this living room, help break up large walls. You don’t have to worry about hanging art in this space.

Lavender walls help this otherwise busy living room feel calm. Chinese ancestral paintings hang over the sofa, framed by ginger jars on wall brackets, and the sofa is upholstered in an overscale ikat.

Miles Redd rehung art throughout his mother’s home in Atlanta. In the family room, he added brackets and clustered all blue and white (which he bought at auction) china for impact.

In the adjoining family room of a Greenwich, Connecticut, house, designer Lee Ann Thornton covered the walls and sectional in the same fabric, Quadrille’s Persepolis: “I wanted the space to feel more hip and fun,” she says. The ottoman is covered in Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s Kabba Kabba.

An upstairs sitting room offers expansive water views. Designer Frank Roop upholstered the frame of the sectional in a Manuel Canovas fabric and its cushions in Osborne & Little’s Peregrina. Old-fashioned roll-up curtains in C&C Milano’s Laveno Mille hide modern solar shades by Lutron that lower with the press of a button to darken the room for TV watching. The vintage carved wood stool contrasts with a graphic rug from Steven King Decorative Carpets.

With bright green lacquered walls — matched to a Pantone chip by Fine Paints of Europe — and a custom Langham & Fine rug patterned like formal garden hedges, a Texas family room takes on the freshness of an outdoor space. Back-to-back sofas in an ivory Cowtan & Tout fabric create two zones within the expansive room.

Think red, white, and blue feels too patriotic? Not when it’s paired with geometric lamps and a neutral, patterned rug.

Who says backsplashes are just for your kitchen? Try tiling your fireplace — blue and white if it’s a beach house, obvi.

A pendant lamp adds to the jewel-box effect of this lush living room. Even though they used contrasting colors, the darker tones keep it from feeling too bold.

The cool palette counterbalances the bright light that pours through 12-foot-high windows.
