I once read that when it comes to service, you can get two of the following, but never three: speed, quality, and cost effectiveness. Kathryn and her team at Design Inside prove that it’s actually possible to get all three! I was astounded that Design Inside was able to design a beautiful and unique space for my family so quickly. The turn-around on scheduling an appointment and having Design Inside produce a plan was less than two weeks. (folks, THAT’S OUTRAGEOUSLY FAST! Of course, mine may be a unique case; but judging by the air of normalcy, I’m inclined to say that speed is something Design Inside prides themselves on.) But not only was the plan beautiful and unique, it was delivered and presented with professionalism and clarity. Design Inside both mailed and hand-delivered the plans; the Senior Designer, Kathryn, took the time to explain them to me in layman’s terms; she cheerfully answered all my questions and elaborated when she sensed I was confused or not entirely seeing her vision. Finally, I was impressed with Design Inside’s pricing. Of course, there are a lot of folks out there who don’t seem fazed by prices. After all, if you even have the luxury of *Thinking* about an interior designer, you must be loaded, right? But I am neither loaded nor unfazed by prices; I just have a respect for beauty and enough sense to know when it’s time to call in the experts! Money matters to me, and I want to keep my money. Kathryn and her team were reasonable, fair, and cost-conscious. In all, I just felt like they were working with me every step of the way. I’m quite impressed and look forward to moving ahead with them.

Katy is the perfect mix of practical and design savvy. In our first meeting, Katy helped me to prioritize my projects for the biggest impact. In addition, she directed me on where to invest dollars and where we could save. We worked on several areas of my home in tandem…living room, hallway, master bedroom and guest room. Not to mention storage ideas and thoughts on future bathroom projects. The process was seamless and easy. We put a plan together in a few hours and we were off to the races. One of the most enjoyable experiences in working with Katy was the ability for me to add my own personal touches along the way. She really adapts to her clients in terms of how involved they would like to be. For me, I had lots of ideas that Katy helped me bring to life, streamline and balance. And she also encouraged me to take chances with paint colors, fabric upholstery choices and more. My gallery wall is one of my favorites! I could never have measured and hung with such precision. And my reupholstered hallway bench is one of my favorite stand-out pieces. Thanks Katy! I love Katy’s design eye, easy-to-work with attitude and desire to put her client’s style into every choice. My condo is finally a home! Love it! I highly recommend working with Design Inside and I plan on doing so for my next projects!

I really enjoyed working with Angela Murphy from Design Inside. I couldn’t have completed my bedroom update and kitchen update without Angela. I was really busy with work and it was helpful to have her narrow down the choices for me and give me a professional guidance on how to update and add new selections to my existing decor. I felt she really listened to me and understood my style well. Angela brought a good range of choices for each item I needed. She was great when I had an emergency issue with an appliance. She helped me through the issue during off-hours. Angela completed the project on-time and on-budget. The contractors she used were very professional and perfectionists. I will be working with her again on future projects.

Thank you Katie for all your help!!!!! From paint colors, bedding choices, room layout, rug choices – your advice was worth every penny! I purchased the paint consult – which don’t be fooled by the name is 2 hours of paint and interior design advice. I wish I purchased this when I first moved in – Katie has a great eye, great ideas for the price sensitive, and experience working with different vendors.

Outside of work, she keeps busy chasing after her twins, Frederick & Elizabeth while trying to keep the house somewhat orderly.

Everyone can benefit from some professional help and this includes our homes. A home if it doesn’t feel right can cause you some anxiety and life is already fraught with enough stress. Who needs more when they walk through their front door? Not me! It should be a haven from the stress ball world and filled with the things you like to have around you, after all it is the one environment that you can control. Kathryn and Bill are the house therapists and they can help you get your stuff together in a non-threatening way. They are really nice, down to earth people, not stuck up designers who only work in certain zip codes. They never made me feel bad and I was really inspired to start working on my place. So you can only afford Ikea but have caviar tastes..they’ll work with you, just be brave and pick up that phone and have them come by. I promise you won’t have to sell a kidney to have a nice place.

I hired Design Inside to remodel my living room and kitchen. First the pros: -The initial consultation and design work was professional and creative. -The backsplash they helped me pick out looks great. -the contractor they employ is a professional in all regards. The cons: -Their quality control process is non-existent. I had incomplete hardware delivered. I also had an entire incorrect sofa delivered. How they don check these things prior to delivery astonishes me. -After I started venting my frustrations they “gave up” on my project. This left me with an incomplete redesign: -I have drapery hung, but it is wrinkled as all getout because they didn’t bother to bring a steamer. -They totally ignored accent items (pillows, etc). Basically they helped with the big ticket items (probably items they get a spiff on) yet ignored the pieces that tie a home together. When it was all said and done, I spent 5 figures with this firm and I didn’t get the courtesy of a project follow up nor a simple “thank you for your business.” Very disappointing. Long story short, their ideas are good but execution is severely lacking.

I could not imagine having a more positive experience with interior designers than I had with Katy and Bill. They worked around my busy work schedule and met with me on evenings and weekends. Katy quickly assessed my personal style and brought me a handful of fantastic options for each item that I requested. The paint colors and tile she selected were perfect, and she found an amazing convertible living room table that gets compliments from every guest in my home. Also, because Design Inside charges by the hour (rather than as a percentage of purchases), they had no incentive to ‘upsell’ me to more expensive tile, fixtures, or furniture. The total cost of my redesign was very reasonable and within the budget I communicated to Katy and Bill. Perhaps most impressive, Katy managed the entire execution of the redesign on my behalf. I travel for work 3-4 days a week, so Katy received all deliveries and managed all subcontractors on my behalf. I would arrive home each week to see more of my condo transformed. It couldn’t have been easier. Katy and Bill are consummate professionals, and I recommend them unconditionally – especially for first-time interior design users.

Working with the folks at Design Inside has been a wonderful experience. I worked mostly with Abigail on a few rooms in my house and a small job at my mother’s. Abigail is talented, responsive and an overall pleasure to work with. The time and expense I put into their services resulted in rooms we are very happy with and I spent my money much more effectively than had I tried to do it on my own. We designed a room for the kids to play in/recreation area, redid a powder room and came up with plans for LR/DR and two bedrooms. I’ll use them again for sure.

We worked with Kathryn Cherne and it was a great experience! She was able to listen to our ideas and incorporate our design style into the color choices. I have always struggled with picking the right colors for a room since the samples at the store are never the same as when you put them in your home. She was able to choose colors for walls, ceilings and trim in relation to our space, lighting, and other materials in the home to create a consistent theme for our entire 1400 square foot home. She also helped us make some design choices on tile and granite colors, and window treatment design. She was very professional and was able to complete the entire consultation in two hours. Her expertise saved me countless hours and energy in trying to pick colors myself. Great experience!

Kenny M.Chicago, IL – Yelp!

I’m disappointed that I need to leave this review. For the most part we enjoyed working with Design Inside. Kathryn and her team gave us helpful advice on art and picked out nice accent pieces for our condo. The one star is for two main reasons: 1. Poor project management: In 2015 we starting working with Kathryn to design and implement a custom cabinetry project. After blowing past multiple extended deadlines, the project is still not totally finished. We asked to see a breakdown of designer hours to better understand how the price had far surpassed the original estimate. We even discussed getting money back if we learned that we had fact been over billed for designer or vendor error. The company never sent this breakdown. 2. Unresolved damage: We also worked with Design Inside to place some shelves in our master bathroom. One of the shelves was drilled into the wrong tiles because the designer incorrectly marked where it was supposed to go. We get that mistakes happen and we were optimistic that we could find a solution we could live with. We had a conversation with Kathryn about trying an alternate solution but were clear that if this alternative didn’t meet our expectations, we would want to explore monetary compensation. When we followed up with the company to implement the alternate solution, we felt pressured into accepting the alternative solution as the final solution. Attempts to have a phone call to clarify the plan were rebuffed by the company and there is still unresolved damage in the bathroom to this day. In both these situations we had good conversations with Kathryn that made us feel confident we could find a solution that made both parties happy. Unfortunately after those conversations we were told that Kathryn was out of the office, they didn’t know when she would be back, and her associate would handle our concerns. In the course of communicating with her associate Brittany the trust we had the company was destroyed. She never sent the breakdown of hours like we requested and refused to have a phone conversation to clarify the plan for the bathroom. After multiple requests for a phone conversation and trying to call the office, the only phone call we received was from their lawyer.

We used Design Inside for our recent condo renovation, and we were pleased with our designer, Abigail. We had looked into three or four design firms and went with Design Inside because we got along well with Abigail from the initial consultation. She’s friendly and had suggestions from our first meetings. Our remodeling scope was pretty basic (resurface hardwood floors, install new tiling, new lighting, new kitchen countertops/backsplash/hardware, painting, etc.) We weren’t planning on taking down any walls or putting up new walls – hence “pretty basic” in our eyes! The initial few weeks involved back and forth with designs and occasional meetings with Abigail so she could get a handle on what we wanted done. Abigail was accommodating with meeting/phone times, and would often meet with us late afternoons or early evening. She created designs we had never thought of doing (enclosing in structural poles, wainscoting, etc). Abigail also was able to easily “read” my husband and I in terms of color schemes and we ended up choosing one of the first few samples of tiling and backsplash that she dropped off with us. Kudos for that! Abigail also provided us bimonthly hours summary / detail so we knew how much we were being charged for her services. She would break down the time she spent working for us by the minute and it was helpful to see where our dollars were being spent. From a “grand overall design”, Abigail did a good job, but when we started getting into the details in the later phases, we did run into a few minor issues. I recommend ordering all materials / furniture / art yourself and not going thru Design Inside. With a little work on the intranet, you can find it cheaper, not to mention a lower delivery charge. We had a few material mix-ups with Design Inside – i.e. we received the wrong hardware; not enough tile or grout was ordered. Abigail’s measurements for the den were incorrect so she didn’t order enough tile / grout – her measurements for the wallpaper were also off, but this time we almost ordered too much. The invoice system used by Design Inside is a little confusing and you should pay very close attention and track your own expenses. It’s hard to describe but trying to track all the bills and refunds with the invoices provided was difficult. Overall – I would recommend Design Inside and Abigail for your remodeling needs. I would just offer a bit of advice to double check measurements and order your own materials, but would still recommend the company. Abigail provided different designs and options that demonstrated her design skills as well as her ability to connect with us in terms of what our goal of the remodel was. In our eyes, that was key.

I highly recommend Design Inside. Kathryn & Bill are extremely professional and easy to work with. I had a very pleasant experience with them and will use Design Inside in the future!

A Big Yelp Woohoo! As good as it gets! Design Inside recently helped me redefine my living room/dining room areas, and man does it look good. Kathryn and her team were excellent to work with throughout the process. I have a very sporadic work schedule but they were able to patiently bob and weave to get everything done. I am very happy with the outcome and a hidden bonus is that now I am in touch with some excellent craftsmen as well. The only downside is I have to fess up to receiving help from Design Inside when I get compliments from my friends…Thanks Kathryn and everyone at D.I.!!!! AJ

Courtney from Design Inside helped us create our urban oasis in the West Loop. She did color selection, space planning and made furniture recommendations. Courtney was respectful of our time and budget, and super easy to work with. Project actually came in under budget, and Courtney promptly returned the remaining balance of our deposit. I would recommend Design Inside to anyone looking for interior design services. – Pete and Ann G.

We’ve worked with Katy and Bill for over 10 years now, starting with our townhouse remodel, then on a remodel of our current single family home and most recently on furnishings for a vacation property. They are talented, honest and so friendly. They are both wonderful to work with, and very adaptable- our styles and choices have changed over the years and they’ve given us suggestions we love every time. They have been there for us every step on the way on our projects, even coming over to hang artwork and give suggestions on small decorative details. We will definitely work with Katy & Bill again in the future and can recommend Design Inside without any hesitation.

Brittany graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a BS in Interior Architecture and Design in December 2011 after winning “Best Portfolio in Show” from her graduating class. She joined the Design Inside team in the summer of 2015 after working for three years as an interior designer for Pottery Barn.

Kathryn & Bill Cherne started Design Inside back in 2006. They were dating at the time while Kathryn was in Interior Design School and Bill was working as an IT Consultant. One night, Kathryn was venting to Bill about her design job and swore to Bill that “one day” she would do things differently. That night, Bill filed the paperwork with the state of Illinois and Design Inside was born.

We needed to redecorate our living room. My husband found Design Inside on the internet. I was a bit hesitant about finding a decorator that way; but we had a fantastic experience with Emily Barry, and love our “new” room! She is not only a wonderful person, but a good listener and problem solver. Emily won’t stop until she finds the option that meets your needs! When concerns or problems arose; she not only listened attentively, she solved them as quickly as possible. When Emily had a death in the family; one of her colleagues, from Design Inside, stepped in and did a wonderful job. I can’t recommend Emily Barry, of Design Inside, highly enough!

I think it is worth posting a few clarifications to give Yelpers a better idea of how I ended up in this situation. After talking with Kathryn about how to proceed with the bathroom damage and the billing concerns, I did feel optimistic that a solution would be reached. However, it is alarming when you ask a company for clarification on billing/damage to property and then suddenly your main contact is unavailable with no date for return. I honestly believe if the company had committed the same vigor to returning my calls and providing clarification as they have to responding on Yelp then we could have come to a solution. I never demanded a return of the payments made over the last 18 months. I only wanted to better understand why the designer fees were exorbitantly higher than what I had been quoted and to find a fair solution. And, if I had been informed that the other projects with Kathryn would be distractions or would complicate the primary project starting in July 2015, then I would not have asked her to pursue them. Perhaps this is something for Yelpers to keep in mind if they decide to work with Design Inside – keep a close eye on billing and don’t work on multiple projects at once. When Kathryn was out of the office, we were willing to work with her staff until they were unclear in email communication, stopped answering our phone calls to clarify the situation and refused to tell us when Kathryn would return. It’s unfortunate that that the owner of a company would call a client abusive for trying to follow up on damage in his apartment and requesting clarification on billing. At a certain point, I did threaten to post reviews and contact a lawyer because progress on the projects had stopped after repeated attempts to reach them. I was particularly concerned that I had not received any clarification on the billing – or even indication that I would receive it in a timely manner – even though Kathryn told me that she would look into it. In fact, when we were contacted by email, they had no idea what I was talking about. Regarding my review history, while I will admit I have not done as good of a job as I should have to provider Yelpers with positive reviews of businesses, I think that may be because I’ve been blessed to have had mostly positive experiences and have underestimated the impact of the positive reviews on Yelp. However, you will notice I’ve acted to remedy that (even prior to Design Inside’s incorrect response that I have not posted positive reviews). More importantly, I think there is something to be said for the fact that I have been reviewing on Yelp since 2013, and this marks only my third negative review. It says something about the lengths of mistreatment I feel I need to endure from a company before I will negatively review them. And really, should my yelping history really impact the quality of my review or the impact that my negative experience with Design Inside had on me? I believe if Design Inside had spent the care working with me to find a solution that they spent critiquing my Yelp resume we may have been able to find a solution that would have worked for both of us. Finally, I think it’s worth noting that I did offer to go to mediation to resolve these concerns, and I frequently expressed my willingness to discuss the issue over the phone, but Design Inside has not taken my offer to use any of these methods to find a solution. I would love to find an amicable solution, but so far, any attempt at a solution has been one sided and unfair. I am not interested in settling this issue on Yelp but I do feel I have a right to my opinion and that Yelpers should know about my experience. Yelpers – I promise you I’ll write more positive (and preferably brief) reviews.

Brad O.Chicago, IL – Yelp!

We contacted Design Inside because we were having difficultly picking out colors for our new condo. We had never used a designer before and after using them I will call them any time we need any major work done. They exceeded our expectations in every way and did a great job of finding out what our style was before they even started working. Their fee is more than reasonable and they even helped us pick out fixtures via email for no charge. We probably even saved money by using them because I know we would have spent a lot on buying paint samples. This doesn’t even include the time and hassle of the process. Hands down this is some of the best money I’ve spend on my condo. Thanks Bill and Kathryn.

I can’t say enough good things about working with Bill and Katy. I hired them about 4 years ago for work on my master bed and bath, and then 2 years later for the rest of my place. They did fantastic work, and I continue to get compliments on my place… people are surprised that a single guy living alone can have such a nice place. Almost offensively so, now that I think about it. A couple of things stand out when you work with the two of them, besides how nice, professional, and accommodating they are. The stagegate process. Given that this was my first time hiring professionals to help decorate, I really appreciated that at each step in the process I could change it, stop, or continue going. Much different from some of the other designers I talked to. The way I was presented options. I never felt like I had to do something a specific way, and if I didn’t like the options presented they would go back and find other ones – they really wanted me to feel like it was “mine”. But when I was stumped they would offer up their personal opinions on what would look best. Even though I’ll joke to friends that “all I did was pay for it,” it definitely feels like something I would have done if I had the ability to. That they would do as much or as little as I wanted in managing the work itself, and at very reasonable rates. Have I mentioned how nice they are? If I move I will hire them again. It’s that simple.

Brittany has had a passion for interior design for as long as she can remember. During design school she spent time doing home staging and gained an affinity for minimizing clutter and organizing. My husband and I have never had an eye for colors or decorating so we hired Design Inside to work on our apartment and help with our home office. What started off as work on a small office eventually became a redesign of our whole place (not to mention my husband’s office) because they were so amazing and beyond reasonable! Katy makes you feel at ease and helps you figure out your style instead of pushing an agenda on you. Never did they make us feel awkward when we’d have to reevaluate an idea and stick with a budget. In fact, Katy would offer up a range of options at different price points and helped us figure out ways to make the most out of what we already owned. Everyone who has seen our place has been blown away with what Katy did. Her ideas, eye for design, and personality just make her a joy to work with. We will use her every chance we get and recommend her to everyone.

“… Working with Design Inside was money well-spent because Kathryn is talented in both technical and creative design. She measured and prepared for every contingency when creating a plan to transform our galley-style kitchen into an expanded and multi-purpose open-concept design that included kitchen, mudroom, and workspace. She was efficient in helping us make design choices to update our bathroom, and concise with material recommendations and measurements needed to replace our front porch…”

Make use of area rugs to make softer hardwood floors. Throw area rugs give warmth and may add great texture, shade and personality to your own living space. Hardwood floor surfaces are beautiful and effortless to keep up but they be short of the comfort that carpeted floors offer, particularly inside the cooler months. Region rugs can also include fun and functionality to be able to your livable space . Use a number of of varying patterns and even fabrics together to display your character. Or include several rugs of typically the identical pattern and material , or different textures yet the same color. The particular possibilities are endless. A person can change your place rugs to reflect the particular seasons using warmer colors and fabrics for chillier months and lighter types for the warmer instances of the year. Right now there are many lovely organic cotton , washable area rugs which in turn are suitable for those houses with children. There definitely is no reason precisely why a property with young kids cannot become a fashionable one.

Employ what you already have got to decorate. Most of us possess items in our property , probably packed up within boxes somewhere and haven`t given them a 2nd glance. Your property needs a few accessories. Rather than running to be able to the store, take a new good look at whatever you already have. Trays, wood , acrylic, metal or sterling silver can be on top rated of luggage racks, green tea carts, trunks, bedside desks and coffee tables regarding extra texture and dimensions . Arrange candles on these people , frames or pile textbooks on top of these people . Plates can be strung to create wonderful walls art. Art from little one`s books can be frame and hung in nurseries, children`s rooms or their particular bathrooms. You will get amazed at your talent with what you previously have!

Living green . Add plants in order to your living area . Add these people to every room, smaller or large, few or perhaps many. Plants is surely an affordable means to accessorizing your own space and adding coloring and texture. Not just are plants beautiful although many can clean home air and balance humidness . They can absorb contaminants and remove harmful smells from the air. Zero home should be with no these wonderful greens!

Paint smaller bedrooms in softer, lighter colours to make the room sense larger. The living area above is an excellent sort of how to be able to maximize a small living area . A room of this particular size gets the tendency in order to seem cramped, however the huge windows, light colored wall space and ample utilization of mirror not only reflect typically the natural light pouring throughout from your doors and the particular windows however the use associated with mirrors also shows the optic illusion of space, generating the room seem larger than it actually is usually . Conversely, darker colors will certainly make a room think smaller. Even with the particular abundance of natural lighting and the strategic holding of the mirrors, this kind of room in a dark shade might have an even more boxed-in feel into it.

Wicker baskets. Straw-plaited baskets are an inexpensive and elegant approach to include storage to any place . Baskets can be applied to store and show books, architectural and interior decoration magazines, toys, towels plus blankets to name some sort of few. Place a handful of tiny wicker baskets around the counter-tops in your kitchen in order to beautifully display and shop your fruit and greens

Slip into some thing a tad bit more comfortable!. Slip addresses frequently get a negative rap but they happen to be truly wonderful things. That they can function as a methods of changing your furniture`s look to reflect the particular seasons. These easily taken out coverings improve an advanced look without constantly being concerned about people dirtying or perhaps spilling on your home furniture . Slip covers are best for rooms used regularly by children. Over a new white slip-covered couches provides the air of an everyday , comfortable, easy yet advanced elegance.

Add a dangling pot holder to your current kitchen. Kitchens are designed to be warm plus inviting. We spend very much of our time inside them whether it end up being for preparing meals, helping meals or entertaining. The hanging pot rack pays to elegance. Kitchens are intended to feel as even though they are in continuous use and a dangling pot rack certainly can make one feel this approach . In addition to searching so wonderful, (there are extensive sizes and styles available) additional cupboard space under is actually freed up in order to store other items. Rarely has anyone complained associated with having too much storage space.

Car paint or wallpaper your bookcases. This instant pop associated with color will brighten and even re-energize any room! Really amazing how something thus simple as a layer of colorful paint can easily instantly energize and enhance your space. This built/in bookcase would be easy and ordinary with no vivid blue interior. Probably the easiest and most inexpensive approach to transform a boring area is usually to apply a cover of paint somewhere unpredicted . Bookcases are an best place to start since you don`t need to coloring a large area. Additional fun places to incorporate a new pop of color incorporate painting fireplace mantels, typically the insides of closets, hallways and ceilings.

Make use of decorative mirrors to incorporate fast light to your living area . As seen above, wall mirrors could also be used to make a new small space feel bigger . For larger rooms, or perhaps any room with a new more limited amount regarding natural light, mirrors located directly across in the house windows , will add instant light source . Decorative mirrors doubles throughout lieu of art to be able to fill empty wall area . Large or small, showcases add light and dimensions to your liveable space.

Differ your workout. Mix upwards patterns and textures. Mixture up old and fresh , expensive and cheap. There`s nothing wrong with positioning family heirlooms alongside the modern couch. Great inside decorators will tell a person that one of the particular most important aspect in order to decorating your house is that this reflects who you will be , your personality and your current style. A vintage Chippendale workplace that was your grandfather`s tells a story. That tells the story associated with your past. The modern day couch you became adoringly obsessed with and just had to purchase likewise tells a story, your current story, and there is usually no reason the offer and past can`t co-exist beautifully together. A similar may be said for skill. You might not would like to place a piece of art by Salvador Dali about the same wall next to the Monet, but there`s simply no reason why that they can`t end up being in the same area together. With fabrics regardless of whether it be furniture, carpets or pillows, varied colours and patterns would bring friendliness and texture with your lifestyle space.

No matter if you`ve just moved and looking for a fast , little home pick-me-up, or even perhaps something better, presently there are some well-known interior design tricks that designers use that you simply too can effortlessly do with minimal energy and cost. Sometimes the particular smallest things associated with best impact. It could become digging in a reflection , a painting, a light or even a vegetable. You may want to become softer your walls, brighten the room, or then add warmness to your living place. Look into these clever style as well as notice how they can encourage you!
