Soft blue walls and crisp white woodwork provide a traditional backdrop for a softly rounded soaking tub from Waterworks. The tub is framed by a study in contrasts: one side features a polished-nickel étagère (also from Waterworks); the other showcases a curvaceous Alexandra quatrefoil chair from Hickory Chair. The simple striped Elveden sheers are by Villa Nova for Romo.

Interior designers Susan Anthony and Maureen Wright used creative details to visually enlarge this 6×7-foot guest bathroom while celebrating the homeowners’ love of the color blue. Their first decision? Wrapping the room in horizontal ribbons of blue and white subway tiles. “We chose a soft, pretty hue that’s reminiscent of the nearby sea,” Anthony says. Plus, a glass shower enclosure allows bathers to see the stripes from every vantage point. “They appear to go on and on, encouraging your eye to keep moving and making the bathroom feel bigger than it really is,” she says. “I wanted to respect the space … and make it feel light, airy, and summery,” says designer Maureen Footer about the breezy Cape Cod house she renovated for her sister Patrice Lovato. That’s why azure-blue tiles from Urban Archaeology clad the walls of the master bath, part of a fresh blue-and-white palette that carries throughout the whole house. White woodwork and a marble-tile floor provide a crisp counterpoint to the colorful hue. The marble-topped vanity with exposed plumbing was designed by Footer, and executed by Waterworks.

Designer Kriste Michelini infused warmth into her home’s clean-lined master bath by choosing a concrete trough sink in glowing chambray blue. The walls are clad in David Hicks geometric hexagon wallpaper from Cole & Sons. The fixtures are by Dornbracht.

While much of this Florida vacation home focuses on entertaining, the master suite offers a luxurious retreat. The suite’s relaxed vibe starts with its color palette—part of the homeowners’ desire to reflect the beauty of Florida’s Gulf Coast without overt beach references. “I kept it neutral and monochromatic and chose the same shade of blue [Farrow & Ball’s ‘Borrowed Light’] for the bathroom walls as for the bedroom ceiling,” says designer Mary McWilliams. White cabinetry with polished-nickel pulls offers a subtle contrast. See this room’s tub area on the next slide.

Jane Brown dreamed of making her master bath a watery oasis, a response to delightful summer vacations at Lake Michigan. So designer Andrea Schumacher chose indigo-patterned drapes and bold blue tiles to bring the essence of water into the space. Carrara marble surfaces create a polished framework for the splashes of blue. A Murano-inspired chandelier draws attention to the sculptural white tub below. The finished space delivers on the color scheme’s promise of tranquility. “It’s hard to keep my daughter and son out of there, and even the dog has used it,” Jane says. “Lucky for me, the door has a lock.” See a tile detail on the next slide.

Love to decorate with blue? We do, too. Especially when it’s paired with white to transform a run-of-the-mill bathroom into a crisp, clean oasis. But don’t think that all blue-and-white lavs look the same. We’ve gathered some of our favorite master baths, guest baths, and powder rooms to show that blue and white can do everything from contemporary to Country French. Keep clicking and see for yourself.

Rectangular wall tiles from New Ravenna showcase undulating shades of blue that create a dramatic backsplash behind custom vanities. Also used for a large inset in the shower, the tiles “… served as the jumping-off point for the entire master suite,” says designer Andrea Schumacher.

Cobalt-blue paint gives this tiny powder room and its marble-topped vanity a majestic presence. An elaborate gold-finish mirror, matching fixtures, and a pair of sconces dripping with crystal beads add romantic appeal. The floor wears honed-marble floor tiles with gray, taupe, and ivory striations.

Designers Danielle Rollins and Bill Ingram transform a cavernous master bath into a cozy feminine retreat by using the same large-scale floral print for both walls and draperies. This design technique “brings the room down and adds a cosseting effect,” Rollins says. A navy blue surround helps the tub stand out against its patterned surroundings. The white Oslo chandelier with knife-pleated silk shades comes from Circa Lighting.

“Before, everything was froufrou, gold, and shiny,” says designer Kara Childress about the once-formal European-style house now called home by Texans Todd and Diana Brock. “My job was to [tone it down] and add patina.” So for the guest bath, Childress chose a teal blue-and-white toile wallcovering that, along with the festoon shade, swathes the room in quintessential Country French style. Both the tub niche and floor wear honed limestone tiles. A carved-wood Savonarola-style bench keeps towels close at hand.

Designer Mary Ludemann chose a palette of soft blue-gray and crisp white to give this master bath an airy sense of spaciousness. The color combo also enhances the room’s clean cottage look: a bit nostalgic but not overly modern—exemplified by a vanity that resembles a vintage sideboard, but with a sleeker silhouette. A vaulted ceiling and crystal chandelier dramatize the vanity area, while a gabled bump-out provides the perfect niche for a white freestanding tub. The floor is clad in antique heart-pine planks that ground the room with warmth.

In this historic Atlanta home, slanted walls and ceilings set the stage for a precocious powder room clad in an exuberant ocean blue-and-white ikat paper from Thibaut. “Using something so patterned camouflaged the angles and eaves more than if we’d painted,” says designer Heather Dewberry. Classic white fixtures and woodwork provide moments of calm.

For this showhouse powder room, James Farmer took his design cues from the home’s Italian Baroque architecture—selecting a watery blue ikat wallcovering, a coordinating antique mirror, and coastal artwork with gilded frames. The custom gray-washed vanity offers a quiet contrast to the patterned wall lined with landscape prints and paintings.

Above the tiled stripes, the designers cloaked the walls in elegant damask-look wallpaper. “It’s actually vinyl, but it’s so beautiful that you’d never know it,” says designer Susan Anthony.

This pretty powder room (part of a vacation home) gets its breezy attitude from Phillip Jeffries’ “Imperial Gates” wallcovering in Dove and Harbor Blue. The seaside-inspired mirror is from Webb Marsteller, and the graceful Opus faucet with crystal egg handles comes from Waterworks.

Designer Kelley Proxmire turned a bland powder room into a jaunty retreat by using royal blue and white as her palette. Traditional crown molding separates the striking blue ceiling from a bold wall covering whose pattern is repeated in a skirted dressing table. A starburst ceiling-hung light fixture from Vaughn adds a glamorous touch.

Designer Megan Winters asked the homeowner to choose the color palette for her new house in Lake Forest, Illinois. “Navy blue is my favorite color,” says Julie Eckert. “But, I said, ‘It’s hard.’ Her response? ‘Don’t worry; I’ll get it.’ And she did.” Thanks to Winters’ expertise, Julie’s favored blue-and-white palette connects every room. In the master bath, navy blue accents pop against white walls and polished statuary-marble flooring—especially the Roman Shades made from “Slendang” ikat patterned linen from Nobilis. Gilded étagères and custom mirrors inject glamor.
