Contemporary Interior Design

Neutrals, black, and white are the main colors in contemporary style interiors. The palette is often punched up and accented with bright and bold color. Black is often used to ground and define a contemporary style room. With walls painted in a basic neutral, you have a wonderful backdrop for bold colored accessories. If the walls and windows are painted in pastels, the trims should be neutral. If a wall is a bright, bold color, neutrals should be used everywhere else.

The most obvious and distinctive element of a contemporary style interior design is line. It’s found in architectural details, use of bold color blocks, high ceilings, bare windows, and geometric shapes in wall art and sculpture. The bare space, on walls, between pieces of furniture, and above in upper areas, becomes as important as the areas filled with objects. In contemporary interiors, less is more. Each piece stands out as individual and unique.

The beautifully finished glass desk is accessorised to perfection, each piece contributing to the contemporary design and allowing the space to feel calm and ordered.

Plants and flowers should be large and dramatic in simple containers placed in contemporary rooms. Large blooms with interesting leaves work better than small arrangements. If space allows, place upward focusing lights around a large plant on the floor. Keep the arrangements neat with rocks or bark chips arranged over the dirt.

Many believe that contemporary interior design is all about achieving the ultra-minimalist look, but that isn’t necessarily the case.

Displaying refined symmetry, taupe shades and animal-inspired accessories, our contemporary interior design of this gentleman’s office features; elegant Eicholtz feature lamps, stylish Osborne and Little animal print cushions and Casamance houndstooth wallpaper with a deluxe suede feeling.

Generous use of metal, stone, and opaque or clear glass works well in a room decorated in a contemporary style. To soften and warm up space, add heavily textured fabrics in plain colors for window treatments, pillows, or rugs.

Colorful, fussy prints should be avoided since they confuse a plain space that is key to a contemporary style home. Two-tone prints work well. Think about a zebra print pillow on a black leather chair, a large leopard-print pillow thrown on a plain floor, or bold, heavily textured striped rug to anchor solid colored, sleek furniture.

Simplicity shines throughout this contemporary interior design. The Porta Romana Whirl side table is a timeless piece with a wonderful interplay of metal latticework, adding grace and sophistication to this very stylish bespoke chair in Zinc Textile fabric.

A quartzite chimney breast defines one end of the open-plan living/dining/kitchen area in an Aspen, Colorado, home designed by the architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, with interiors by Shelton, Mindel & Associates.

At decorator Laura Santos’s Manhattan townhouse, a sitting area’s custom-made sectional is upholstered in an Osborne & Little fabric and dressed with Ankasa pillows; the artwork is by Florian Maier-Aichen, the television is by Samsung, and the carpet is by Mansour Modern

Architect Toshiko Mori devised a compound in New York’s Hudson Valley that boldly reimagines glass-house living. Arranged beneath a bespoke light fixture in the main house are a Jean Prouvé dining table and Maarten van Severen chairs, all by Vitra; the suite of leather-upholstered seating is by Dieter Rams for Vitsoe. The Chinese art includes (from far left) a limestone stele fragment, a standing Buddha, a jade cong, and an assortment of bi disks.

At a Manhattan apartment designed by Russell Groves, Great Plains fabrics cover an array of seating in the living room, where an Armani/Casa vase is set on a Wyeth cocktail table and a lamp by York Street Studio rests on a side table by Kerry Joyce for Dessin Fournir. The abstract artwork is by Robert Greene, and the rug is by Carini Lang.

The Hollywood, Florida, getaway of Darlene and Jorge Pérez is filled with art from the couple’s vibrant collection. The back wall of the living room is dominated by a Günther Förg painting, while a work by Alexandre Farto hangs at right. A piece by Michele Oka Doner rests on the side table, and the colorful ball sculpture is by Beat Zoderer. Most of the furnishings throughout the residence are by Baltus Collection.

In this stunning style, neutrals, grey, black and white colour schemes reign (often accented with bold colour), as does the use of clean, smooth lines and geometric shapes.

The gallery of prints sit gracefully above this bench in exquisite Iberis fabric by Casamance, the linear detailing echoed in the classic Porta Romana forged steel floor lamp with a chic mid-century feel.

The kitchen of a North Carolina home by architecture firm Gluck+ features black-walnut-veneer cabinetry and a copper backsplash; displayed on the latter are specially commissioned tile panels by artist Anne-Brit Soma Reienes. The pendant light fixture is by ET2 Contemporary Lighting, the vent is by Dacor, the cooktop and ovens are by Wolf, and the Franke sinks are equipped with Hansgrohe fittings.

Grouped beneath a Lindsey Adelman Studio chandelier in the living room of a Massachusetts home devised by Leroy Street Studio are a pair of Poltrona Frau chairs, a custom-designed sofa, and a teak-root cocktail table by Chista; the photo montage above the fireplace is by Pablo Zuleta Zahr.

Floors in a contemporary style home should be bare and smooth in wood, tile, or vinyl. If you must use carpet for sound control or warmth, choose commercial grades. Add color and texture with plain or geometric-patterned area rugs.

You might like a contemporary style of decorating if you like to keep current with styles, enjoy things that are modern, of today, right now. While it’s been thought that modern interiors are cold and minimalist, today’s contemporary interiors are comfortable and welcoming without being cluttered and dark. It’s a style that is equally appropriate for offices and stores, lofts and homes.

Don’t clutter the contemporary style rooms with collections or too many pieces. Open space is just as, if not more, important as the pieces you put in the space.

The kitchen of designer Muriel Brandolini’s Hamptons beach house is equipped with cabinetry faced in colored wood veneer and concrete counters; the pendant lights are by Twentytwentyone, and the stools and corner bookcase are from Design Within Reach.

The elegant living room contrasts the dark tones of the oak doors and cabinet with the white and light greys in our graceful contemporary interior design. The grand, rounded sofa shapes a homely, inviting space of comfort.

Here we’ve compiled a few examples of our favourite contemporary interior design projects to inspire you!

Contemporary interior design is about creating an environment of comfort and simplicity; uncluttered, fresh and subtly sophisticated. It showcases the beauty of space, clean lines and uncomplicated clarity.

Fundamentally, simplicity, subtle sophistication, texture and clean lines help to define contemporary style decorating. Interiors showcase space rather than things. By focusing on color, space, and shape, contemporary interiors are sleek and fresh. To achieve the look of a contemporary home, it’s important to stick to some basic rules.

Designer Sara Story collaborated with Lake|Flato Architects on her family’s ranch in the Texas Hill Country. A loggia paved with sandblasted concrete links the main house to the children’s wing; Story designed the lounge chairs and the sofas, while the ceiling fan is by Boffi and the dining chairs are from Karkula.

A deep-red Anish Kapoor sculpture greets visitors in the entrance hall of a Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, house designed by Charles Zana for a couple with a blue-chip contemporary-art collection. The text painting is by Richard Prince, and the console is by Eric Schmitt; a dramatic glass-bead sculpture by Jean-Michel Othoniel dangles from 30 feet above.

Furniture pieces should make a bold statement but at the same time be simple and uncluttered, without curves or decoration. Smooth, clean, geometric shapes are essential. Upholstered furniture often wears black, white, or other neutral tones in textured natural fibers found in wool, cotton, linen, silk, jute to add textural appeal. Pillows add a shot of color and texture in clean geometric shapes.

Take advantage of structural elements. Air ducts may hang from a ceiling, broken bricks provide texture and stability, and exposed plumbing pipes are perfectly acceptable in a contemporary style interior. To draw the eye, paint these structural details in bold contrasting colors, or to diminish their importance, blend them with the walls.

So Bored with Your Room? Adding Molding Takes Literally 5 Minutes

In the master suite of a California home by architectural designer Scott Mitchell, a Matthew Brandt photograph is mounted over the fireplace and ink drawings by Van Hanos are displayed above the bed. The sofa and bed are custom designs by Scott Mitchell and Denise Kuriger and are upholstered in de Le Cuona fabrics; the low table is from JF Chen.

Use a basic background and shout out with your favorite color on a piece that will stand out. Less is more! Sofas, chairs, and ottomans often have exposed legs. Beds and chairs usually have no skirt, trim, fringe, or tassels.Don’t use ruffles, excessive carved details, fringe, or floral prints. Abolish cute and small. Go basic, bare, bold, and structural.

This striking Copollo bookshelf with its eye catching round steel frame and matt lacquered shelves adds a rounded softness to the bold linear structure of the sofa in our contemporary Pathé apartment design.

Following a muted palette of soft grey walls and cotton white oak floors throughout, this simple contemporary interior design is elegant, showcasing artistic flair and elements of individual expression in the eclectic choice of furniture.

Sleek and contemporary, this casual living area features a bespoke corner sofa in Osborne and Little fabric and trendy geometric Casamance fabric cushions.

Contemporary interior design is known for sleek surfaces, crisp furnishings, and cutting-edge art. While the style has gotten a bad wrap in the past for being cold and impersonal, more and more modern spaces balance warmth and minimalism for a fresh and dazzling effect. To prove that contemporary decor can be inviting and eye-catching, we’ve gathered gorgeous spaces from the AD archives that show the many sides of the style. From country homes to beach houses, these ultramodern spaces are filled with rugged materials, bold lighting, streamlined furnishings, and yes, even some color, creating rooms that are dramatic, livable, and very of-the-moment. See how top contemporary designers and architects such as Leroy Street Studio, Toshiko Mori, and Lake|Flato give their clients polished and modern spaces.
