Why you’ll love it: With the Complete Yoga Kit Set from Clever Yoga, you’ll have all the equipment you need to reap the benefits of this ancient practice.

Along with improved muscle strength and definition, resistance training helps develop bone density and helps with weight loss.

Buy the Revolution FIT 3-in-1 Training System on Amazon for $179.95

Even reviewers who have lifted with free weights in the past say that this unit provides plenty of resistance for effective strength training. Best of all, you can lengthen or shorten the bands to make the exercises easier or more difficult, meaning that the BodyBoss works for all fitness levels.

This is one of the most popular yoga sets on Amazon, with more than 250 reviews and an average of 4.8 stars. Buyers praise the quality and completeness of the set and many comment on what a great buy it is for the beginning yogi.

Eventually, you will need to upgrade and/or replace your rods or bands. This can be expensive, but it is a necessary cost of maintenance if you continue to utilize this gym. Another drawback to the resistance style is that it’s difficult to build muscle mass with these home gyms. Resistance style home gyms are great for maintaining an elevated heart rate, for burning calories and for toning. However, in order to build muscle mass, you generally need to be able to lift heavy weights to shock your muscles, even if it is for lower repetition. Doing this on a resistance style gym can be difficult.

Unlike a pair of dumbbells, you can’t tuck a hefty home gym unit away under the bed when you’re done using it. However, some, like the Bowflex Blaze, fold up, helping to save on space (when folded, the Bowflex Blaze is 52’’ long and 38’’ wide).

Bowflex’s all-in-one machine comes with up to 210 pounds of resistance, so whether you’re just starting out or are already buff, you’ll give your muscles a workout.

While Power Reels aren’t for the advanced fitness buff who’s already in fairly good shape, if you’re a newbie or middle-of-the-road exerciser, you’ll feel the burn quickly.

Buy Power Reels on Amazon for $59.99 (3-pound) or $69.99 (5-pound or 8-pound)

Why you’ll love it: The 3G Cardio Elite Treadmill is a high-end treadmill that’s perfect for runners.

There are a lot of home gym choices in the same price range as the Bowflex Blaze Home Gym, but the options on this machine are far superior and compete with home gyms priced well higher. For starters, this home gym can be upgraded to 310 or 410 lbs of resistance. You won’t find this much resistance on any other resistance-based home gym, unless you pay about double the price of the Blaze Home Gym. Bowflex also markets this home gym as providing more than 60 different exercises.

Pros: Very effective way to improve core strength and balance, lots of fun

Why you’ll love it: The TheraBand Exercise and Stability Ball holds air better than most exercise balls with its thick walled design.

Body-Solid Freeweight Leverage Commercial Gym Package – $1,497 – 12 Reviews

For this section of the review, we’ve broken the home gyms into two groups: resistance-based and weight-based home gyms. Here are some benefits and a discussion on how each of these home gym styles differ.

Cons: Maximum weight of 52.2 pounds too light for some users

The roller comes in seven different lengths ranging from 36-inches long to 12-inches long. As with all AmazonBasics products, Amazon provides a one-year limited warranty.

Pros: A great workout, perfect for travel, smooth performance, and adjustable length

Balance boards look deceptively simple but give them a try and you’ll quickly find that this isn’t a workout for wimps.

We recommend all these dumbbells in our full buying guide. — Steven John

Cons: If you are already in fairly good shape, you might not get much of a challenge even from the 8-pound set

Even if it’s punctured, the ball will deflate very slowly, allowing you to finish your exercise session. Because the Theraband Exercise Ball retains air so well, you won’t have to reinflate it that often. It does take quite a bit of time to inflate the first time around, though.

Says one satisfied owner, “I thought this might be more of a disposable bike, last a couple of years at best, be too wiggly, weak mechanics, that kind of thing; but quite the contrary, I am happily surprised by the quality of the entire product.”

On top of all that, the best advantage of a home gym has got to be convenience. No more do you have to wake up early to beat the rush to the gym, or eat a late dinner so that you can go to the gym after work. You won’t miss another workout because you feel like you don’t have enough to drive across town and get your routine in. With a home gym, you work out on your own schedule. You won’t have to worry about someone else using the machine when you want it. The convenience of having your own home gym will greatly increase your opportunities to exercise.

You can also use the bar without door mounts for sit-up foot support and other light exercises. The bar is adjustable and fits doorways between 26 and 36 inches wide, and it can be installed so that you can still close the door. The bar features non-slip, extra-long foam grips to ensure you stay up there.

Why you’ll love it: If you want one machine that does it all – arms, legs, chest, back, and abs – with enough variation to work muscles you didn’t even know you had, consider the Bowflex Blaze Home Gym.

There are a number of home gyms that fall into the “not too high, not too low” price range, and if you’ve been saving up for a home gym but don’t want to spend a fortune, these are a great pick for you. One of our favorites is the Powerline Home Gym with Leg Press. It comes with low, mid, and high pulleys as well as a 160-lb. weight stack, which can be upgraded to 210 lbs.

A typical comment, “This is one kick-ass jump rope. I was surprised at first because the rope is so thin. I didn’t think it was going to work, but with a little practice, I’m ripping out double-unders better than I ever have. What even better, the cord doesn’t retain memory, so if you leave it coiled up in your gym bag or you pocket, it doesn’t stay twisted.”

Now, as you build muscle and get stronger, you may outgrow your weight stack or weight plates. So you may need to buy more, but what you already have will always be yours. That brings us to a drawback of weight-based home gyms. For weight stack home gyms, you’ll get a certain amount of weight with the machine. Once you’ve outgrown that weight, you’ll need to upgrade and buy more weight. Beware that some weight stacks do not provide a weight upgrade. What you get is what you get. For weight plate home gyms, you will normally not get any weights at all. You’ll need to buy whatever you need. However, as long as you stay within the capacity of the machine, you can add as much weight as your will ever need. As you can see from all of this buying, you may need to make a pretty large initial investment for your weight-based home gym. That is the ultimate drawback. These home gyms do tend to cost more money. That being said, these gyms are as solid as anything you’ll see in a commercial gym and will last you a lifetime.

The Garren Fitness Maximiza Pull Up Bar is made of chrome steel and comes with three sets of mounting hardware. Two of the sets can support up to 300 pounds of weight. The medium-duty door mount can support 150 pounds and is not recommended for use above waist height.

It seems simple: Basically, the TRX Training Suspension Trainer Basic Kit is a series of sturdy straps, handles, and hooks. But fasten it to a door, rafter, beam, or even a sturdy tree branch, and you have the equivalent of a full gym.

Why you’ll love it: It’s challenging, that’s for sure, but the Revolution FIT 3-in-1 Training System is a fun way to give your core a workout and increase your balance and flexibility.

The Body Solid EXM3000LPS Double Stack Home Gym comes with dual 210 lb weight stacks. So while this is a home gym, you can have a partner to exercise with. Two people can exercise at the same time, each utilizing a separate weight stack. This machine also has seven different stations specifically designed to target various muscle groups. With these stations, you will undoubtedly hit ever muscle group in the upper and lower body and in back and abdominals.

Around 90% of the people who reviewed the Garren Fitness pull-up bar on Amazon gave it a four- or five-star rating. We encourage you to read the customer reviews on Amazon because some of them are fairly entertaining. Buyers like how easy it is to install, though it may take a little work to get it to the right length. There are several buyers who use it on a daily basis and have not had any problems with it, though there are some reports of the foam grips wearing thin over time.  — James Brains

If this exercise ball isn’t the one for you, you might prefer the following:

Why you’ll love it: If you want to combine the benefits of Pilates with the benefits of barre workouts, you’ll find your perfect match with the Supreme Toning Tower.

The beauty of a treadmill is that it accommodates you no matter where you’re starting from fitness-wise. You can walk slowly if you are new to exercise, jog if you’re no stranger to fitness, but still have a ways to go, and run once you’re ready for all-out aerobic exercise. And the 3G Cardio Elite Treadmill is ready and willing to take you to your peak.

Despite its compact size, you can still perform 60 exercises on this gym. Features include a lat bar (to help build back and shoulder muscles) and a lower pulley/squat station (to target muscles in the legs). It also comes with Bowflex Power Rod technology, which offers 210 pounds of resistance. And while some home gyms can take hours upon hours to assemble, reviewers of this unit say that it’s relatively simple to set up (it took one user about 1.5 hours).

When you think of a home gym, low impact may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But it is definitely a benefit. Low impact exercises are realized more with the resistance-based home gyms. The smooth resistance of the elastic rods and bands, or the use of bodyweight, is easy on the joints. Most physical therapists utilize resistance-based exercises in rehabbing patients.

If you’re willing to splurge on a new piece of exercise equipment, a home gym is a smart buy considering how much use you’ll get out of it. One pricier model to check out is the Body-Solid Light Commercial Gym. Not one, not two, but three people can use the equipment simultaneously. The unit features two 210-lb. weight stacks, a bench press, incline press, low row station, and more. On top of that, plush features like high-density DuraFirm seat pads that are contoured for lumbar support make this home gym exceptionally comfortable to use.

Power Reels are a simple, yet ingenious, idea — two fairly lightweight dumbbells (3-pound, 5-pound, and 8-pound are available) joined by flexible tubing to increase the resistance, and thus, the workout. You can exercise your entire body — arms, legs, and core — with natural movements that target just about every muscle.

There’s no doubt that a home gym is a major benefit for anyone. Why in the world would you want to go to a commercial gym, if you don’t have to? That goes for a lot of exercise equipment, but with a home gym, it hits “home” even harder. Home gyms can provide you anywhere from 30 different exercises to over 100. These exercises can target every muscle group in your entire body. There is no exercise that you can do in a commercial gym that you can’t do on a home gym. Say goodbye to monthly gym membership fees.

There are hundreds of workout ideas and videos on the Power Reel website, so you won’t get bored, and you’ll have plenty of guidance in your quest for fitness.

The reason everyone should want a home gym is that it is the best way to get a full body workout. You can buy a treadmill, an elliptical, or an exercise bike; they’re all great at raising your heart rate and burning calories. Much so better than a home gym, but they can’t get you a full body workout. Even entry-level, budget-friendly home gyms provide 30-40 different exercise options for the upper and lower body and for the abdominal area. Some home gyms advertise over 100 different exercise options. Even though treadmills, bikes and ellipticals may be the best at burning calories, with low weight/high repetition exercises on a home gym, you can still burn calories. On top of that you will be toning muscles throughout your entire body.

Affordable home gym options may not be as flashy as the pricier models, but they will still help you improve your strength and get closer to your health goals. While this system doesn’t look like a lot, it offers 50 body-shaping exercises that target every muscle group with its exercise booklet.  While it mostly uses your body weight as resistance it can also tack on up to 50 pounds of weight for a harder lift.

Cons: Installation requires drilling into door jamb, foam grips may wear from heavy-duty use

The TheraBand ball has just the right type of surface for grip-ability, so it won’t move around while you’re working out. The exercise ball is available in four sizes from 45 cm to 75 cm and it comes in a few colors.

Why you’ll love it: The Garren Fitness Maximiza Pull Up Bar is easy to install and it will give you a great workout.

Why you’ll love it: If you’re looking to get fit without blowing your budget, your knees, or your back, consider the Exerpeutic Folding Upright Bike.

To find your home gym, you need to determine what your personal goal is. Do you want to build muscle? If so, a weight-based home gym is what you need. If you just want to get in a little better shape, or burn some calories and tone up, then maybe a resistance-based home gym will do the job for you. Whatever you decide, make sure it fits your end goal, because a home gym will last a lifetime and get you started on a brand new, healthier lifestyle.

So, if your initial goal is to lose some weight and tone, but eventually you’re going to want to add muscle, you’re better off going with a weight-based gym from the start. If you have no intention of ever building muscle mass, then a resistance-based home gym is probably better for you. There’s no doubt that the perfect home gym is out there for you. Ask yourself what it is that you want when you reach your ultimate goal.

Cons: Jumping rope is high-impact, so if you have problems with your knees or back, it might be too intense for you.

People who own the Body-Solid gym say that it’s well worth the money. They rave about the quality, saying that the home gym works just as well as the exercise machines they’ve used at health clubs.

Silicon Valley could help the last people you’d expect — and Elon Musk has given $15 million to a contest that will prove it

Pros: Maintains its shape and holds air better than other exercise balls, includes a slow deflate technology if the ball is punctured, extremely firm, has a good surface for just the right amount of grip, offered in four sizes

Utilizing resistance exercises allow your muscles to stretch and relax in a smooth, consistent manner. This prevents the shock and bounce at the end of the motion that causes muscle spasms. These same movements can be performed on home gyms to provide pain-free, calorie burning exercise routines. The only pain you’ll feel is the natural burn of a great workout.

Luckily, the Revolution FIT 3-in-1 Training System makes it easier to develop your balance by including three progressively difficult bases for the nonslip board: a rocker with a flat bottom for beginners, an inflated base that really gives your core a workout, and a roller for those desiring the highest level of challenge.

Even better, the TRX system is portable, and users say that they bring it with them on vacations and business trips. We love that it takes just 60 seconds to set it up, and once you’re done working out for the day, you can store the product back in its box and tuck it out of sight.

You want to tone up, improve your health, lose a little weight, and gain greater flexibility. What you don’t want to do, however, is pay a sign-up fee plus monthly costs, drive to the gym and circle the parking lot looking for a spot, wait your turn for equipment, deal with potential discomfort or embarrassment if you’re surrounded by people in better shape than you — don’t worry, you’ll get there with time and dedication — then shower in a crowded and possibly dirty locker room.

The bike’s frame is sturdy and durable, and best of all, it easily folds up nearly flat so you can store it when not in use. The padded, large seat is easy on your rear, and the pedals have straps to hold your feet securely in place.

What sets a home gym apart from other exercise equipment is that it builds muscle. The primary purpose of most other fitness machines is to improve cardiovascular fitness and burn calories. A home gym can do that, but it can also build strength and muscle. By performing these 30, 60 or 100 different exercises with heavy resistance, you slowly tear, repair and build your muscles. The more muscle you build, the more calories your body burns to move and exercise. By building muscle you are turning your body into a calorie burning engine. There is no machine that can build muscle like your own personal home gym.

At this price, the Marcy Diamond Elite is almost impossible to beat. The all-in-one design gives you the flexibility of a pulley machine, Smith machine, and free weights.

The Supreme Toning Tower might look like a simple piece of equipment, but its toning abilities are far from basic. With the barre, tension coils, and hand/foot straps, you can perform a wide range of exercises to lengthen and strengthen your muscles, improve your flexibility, and increase your balance.

Cons: Takes a long time to inflate, no inflation pump included, only one color per size

More advanced users will probably want to focus on weight-based home gyms. These gyms are great for building muscle over the entire body with 50-60 different exercise options. The heavy weight allows you to shock your muscles into growing. Yet, they can still be used at low weight/high repetition for toning muscles. Resistance style home gyms are great for beginners because they provide tons of exercises with low weight.

Pros: Lots of variation, very sturdy and durable, easy to adjust resistance, reasonable price for a home gym.

If you never thought you could afford a personal home gym, you’re wrong. For the cost of a couple months of a gym membership, you can have a gym in the convenience of your own home. Though you’ve heard it many times, with many other pieces of exercise equipment, with a home gym you can truly get rid of your gym membership. You can perform every exercise on a home gym that you can do in a commercial gym. No more do you have to deal with the crowds and wait for a machine to open up, or worry about what other people are thinking about you. Having a home gym will free up time that you never thought you had.

Compact home gyms are great for people looking to start a healthier lifestyle or to lose weight and tone up. Another reason novice users may have stayed away from home gyms is because they are perceived as costing a lot of money. However, these days inexpensive home gyms are easily found. There are good home gyms available that cost only a couple hundred dollars. There’s no reason anyone, at any fitness level, should shy away from purchasing their own home gym.

Two Weight Stacks Doubles the Fun: Body Solid EXM3000LPS Double Stack Home Gym

Multiple stations are great because they put you in the correct position and angle to target the muscles. The dual weight stacks and multiple positions means less wear and tear on your machine because the stacks and the stations share the work load. Not that it’d matter with the Body Solid lifetime warranty on this home gym.

Luckily, there’s another alternative: a home gym. Getting fit at home means you can work out whenever the mood strikes with no need for travel, you never have to wait for equipment, and once you have your equipment, you won’t have any further monthly expenses.

Cons: A few owners felt the seat was too large, some complaints of squeaking

More than 1,800 customers give this roller a five-star rating. Reviewers have found that the AmazonBasics roller can be painful when it is your first time using it and if you have particularly fatigued muscles. However, buyers note that if you power through it will aid with post-workout recovery and make it so your body is ready to go again sooner.  — James Brains

This is a popular fitness system on Amazon. It has nearly 700 reviews and an average of 4.7 stars. Buyers love the effectiveness and versatility of the system, along with the fact that it’s easy to take along while traveling, and comes with an extensive workout guide and access to more workout guides online.

Best for Bodybuilding: Marcy Diamond Elite Smith System with Linear Bearings

The sliding seat also allows you to use the machine for an aerobic rowing workout. It’s easy to adjust your resistance as you gain strength, and the wide variety of possible exercises not only provides strength training to your entire body, it also keeps things interesting.

If your end game is burning calories, losing fat, or toning your body, you really can’t go wrong with any home gym. Resistance-based home gyms are probably geared a little more toward these goals, because the amount a weight that you are exercising with is generally a lot less than weight-based home gyms. Low weight and high repetition equal more calories burned, which in turn gets rid of fat and tones the body. But you can still use low weight on weight-based home gyms.

Cons: It can be difficult for some people to master balancing on the board

Another design feature on the Bowflex Blaze Home Gym is that it has a sliding bench to perform rows. Again, this is not a standard feature in this price range. To begin with, you’ll improve your balance and core strength just by balancing on the board, but over time, you’ll be able to incorporate a variety of exercises while you balance, increasing the workout potential of the system.

We’ve gathered up the best home gym workout equipment for cardio, strength training, and flexibility. So whether you want to go high, stay low, or meet somewhere in the middle, you’re set for a fit and healthy year and an in-shape and strong you.

These dumbbells feel sturdy whether laden with just a few pounds for a lateral raise or with more than 50 pounds for bench presses or lunges. They adjust so quickly — you just set the dumbbell into its base among the weight discs, turn the dial to the desired load, and pick the bar up again. And given the fact that this one pair of dumbbells can replace fifteen separate sets, there is simply no comparison when it comes to price.

Pros: Great for travel, very versatile, effective muscle strengthening workout

Among the tons of features that the Diamond Elite’s design offers are a free weight squat rack, a pec deck station, a press bar with sealed bearings, a separate Marcy Olympic weight bench, a dual-function leg developer, high cable crossover, a low pulley with a foot rest, and of course the Smith machine. The Smith machine’s safety stoppers and adjustable catches allow you to safely test yourself with heavy weights and not have to worry about a spotter (always keep safety in mind though!)  And on top of all of these exercises, you can still use the included bench with dumbbells (not included) to isolate muscles. But with just the cage itself you’ll be able to hit just about every muscle group – and hit them hard. Overall, the Marcy Diamond Elite Smith Cage puts you in full control of your workout and sets you up to reach your elite body goals.

The first style that we want to discuss is the resistance-based home gym. Resistance style home gyms are great for novice users and people with physical limitations. The smooth movement of a resistance system is very easy on joints. Your body won’t experience the same wear and tear that you would see with weight stack or weight plate home gyms. While this is an advantage, resistance style home gyms have their drawbacks too. The main drawback is that over time these rods and bands are going to lose their elasticity. It will be difficult to tell if you’re improving physically, or if your system is losing resistance.

The Insider Pick: When you have a home gym, any day of the year is the best day to start improving your health, your appearance, and your well being. That’s why we’ve gathered up the best exercise equipment for your home gym.

Why you’ll love it: The AmazonBasics High-Density Round Foam Roller gives your muscles relief and can help when you workout.

Weight-based home gyms use weight stacks and/or weight plates to add resistance. These are the machines that you see in commercial gyms. The main advantage of these home gyms is that they can take all of the wear, tear and abuse that you can dish out and more. As we said with resistance-based home gyms, over time the elasticity of the rods or bands are going to wear out. You’re going to have to replace the resistance system. You’ll never need to replace weight stacks or weight plates.

Cardio — which comes from cardiovascular — exercise is defined by the American College of Sports Medicine as any exercise that raises your heart rate and breaths per minute while repetitively and rhythmically using large muscle groups. That’s a fancy way of saying that cardio or aerobic exercise is anything that gets you moving fast and hard enough to break a sweat.

Strength training — also called resistance training — is the use of exercise against resistance to build and strengthen muscle. That resistance might come from your own body weight, a dumbbell or other hand-held weight, or a wide range of resistance machines.

If you’ve shrugged off a home gym because you think it requires a dedicated room, a huge expenditure of money, or more knowledge than you possess, we’re here to help. You can get a great workout whatever your budget and you don’t need a ton of space to do it.

The TheraBand Exercise and Stability Ball is one of the thickest-walled balls you can buy, so it holds air longer than most of the competition.

In order to find your home gym, you really need to take a moment to consider your ultimate goal. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced exerciser isn’t important. You can always tailor your exercises and resistance/weight to fit your personal needs on a home gym. The most important question is, “Where do I want my body to be in X amount of time?” Here are the two main directions people usually head towards.

If these dumbbells are too expensive, you can also check out the following:

While improved balance and flexibility can be side benefits of various cardio and strength-training exercises, it’s important to incorporate some training that specifically improves these two functions. They make daily living much easier, and help improve your overall health and mental wellbeing. Aim for at least two balance/flexibility workouts each week.

Home gyms from brands like Bowflex, Body-Solid, Total Gym, and Marcy are an extremely popular way to skyrocket overall fitness and feel great while targeting almost every muscle group for anything from muscle building to weight loss. And you can do this all in the comfort of your own home. On top of that, this happens to be a golden age of all-in-one machines coming in the full range of prices and features. Depending on your budget, you don’t have to break the bank to get your own amazing multi-functional home gym. And if you want to take it to the next level we’ll help you decide among the best home gyms in terms of quality and features.

Total Gym is another quality manufacturer that utilizes an inclined bench, bodyweight, and bands as its resistance system. Most other lesser known resistance-based home gyms have similar designs, but the quality may not be up to the same standard. Bottom line is there are a lot of options and styles within the resistance-based home gym group. If this is the type of home gym that you’re in the market for, make sure you do your research and pick one that will work best for you.

If you want a different option, check out our other pull up bar recommendations from our full buying guide, which include the following:

According to reviews, the Marcy Diamond system is worth the investment with one user saying that the home gym has so far helped them lose almost 100 pounds. Just note that the weight plates are not included with this home gym.

The Priceline Home Gym is suitable for users of any size thanks to adjustable seats that ensure a perfect height. Users say that, although the assembly can be a bit challenging, the quality of the equipment is excellent for the price point.

It’s important to keep in mind that home gyms aren’t only for getting big muscles. You can get HUGE if you want, but contrary to popular belief, big muscles don’t even have to be a result. In fact you can use a home gym to create really any kind of body you want. Want to get smaller? Strength training can absolutely be a huge part of burning fat and dropping unwanted pounds. Want to get leaner? Lower the resistance and do higher reps to tone your muscles and feel great. Want to get bigger? Crank up the weight and pack on that muscle mass. Overall fitness? Create a fun combination workout.  That’s the beauty of a home workout machine. You are dialing in your own fitness and the results are up to you.

We recommend all of these in our full buying guide. — Kyle Schurman

Why you’ll love it: The Survival and Cross Jump Rope was designed for speed with its right-angle ball bearing construction and lightweight handles.

It’s super affordable, too, so it’s well worth the money. The roller has a slight texture to prevent sliding and the foam is just dense enough to massage your muscles and support your body.

Pros: Folds up, sturdy construction, great price, several levels of tension, large seat

The Exerpeutic Folding Upright bike has nearly 5,000 reviews on Amazon, and an average rating of 4.4 stars, so a lot of people are happily pedaling their way to fitness.

When it comes to choosing your jump rope, you can’t go wrong with the Survival and Cross Jump Rope. Whether you’re doing intense training or just starting to get off the couch, you’ll benefit from the super-smooth swivel, the adjustable length, the comfortable handles, and the downloadable exercise manual to help you make the most of your jump-rope workouts.

Why you’ll love them: The Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells let you adjust the weight of each dumbbell anywhere from 5 to 52.5 pounds.

Think jumping rope is only for schoolgirls or Rocky Balboa? Well, think again, because according to the American Council on Exercise, jumping rope not only torches through calories, it also increases the resiliency of your lower-leg muscles, improves balance and coordination, and even ups your cognitive skills. Pretty impressive.

If you don’t want to dedicate an entire corner of the family room to a home gym unit, then a portable design might be best for you. The BodyBoss allows you to mimic the moves you’d do with a rack of dumbbells or squat rack, but instead uses cloth-covered resistance bands that attach to a fold-up platform. Thanks to its portable design, you can store this home gym under the bed or take it with you while traveling.

Can’t seem to make it to the gym? You’re not alone. In fact, 67 percent of people with gym memberships never use them. One of the biggest hurdles is simply getting to the health club. The solution: Bring the workouts to you with a home gym unit that allows you to strengthen and tone from head to toe in the comfort of your house.

If your goal is to build muscle, you’re probably going to want to look at a weight stack or weight plate style home gym. These gyms allow you to use as much weight as you need in order to build muscle. When you exercise with heavy weight, you actually tear your muscles. That’s the “pain” in “No Pain, No Gain.”

Depending on your ultimate goal and budget constraints, the perfect home gym for your needs is definitely out there. Whether it’s based on bodyweight, resistance bands, or good old fashioned weight plates, there are a lot of products on the market. Add to that, home gyms really vary quite a bit in terms of style, function, and quality.  To help you on your quest, we’ve broken down our top choices below for best home gyms by price.

Pros: Great for travel, workout anywhere, very versatile and effective

As the muscle repairs itself, your muscles slowly get a little bit bigger. This is how you build muscle mass. Now, there are resistance-based home gyms that can build muscle, but they are definitely higher-end machines that provide a lot of resistance. You’ll have to compare your budget with what is commercially available.

Some of the really nice features include a wireless heart rate belt, cooling fan, built-in speakers, and iPhone/MP3 connections. The display is similar to what you’d find at the health club, showing you all of your essential stats while you exercise.

You don’t need to be Arnold Schwarzenegger or Lou Ferrigno to have your own home gym. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a fitness guru, home gyms are for every fitness level. Home gyms are a convenience for people who want a full body workout in their own home.

Personal trainers will tell you that you can effectively tone and strengthen using just your body weight—and it’s true. The TRX suspension system helps you maximize those results and allows you to sculpt your body anywhere that you have a place to anchor the system (such as a door). You can perform over 300 exercises with the system, and with regular use, you’ll improve strength as well as flexibility, mobility, and stability.

When it comes to the best home gyms, our top four choices are:

The Exerputic stationary bike isn’t too fancy, although it does display distance, calories burned, speed, time, and heart rate. There are eight levels of resistance, so you’ll continue to be challenged as you grow stronger.

Deciding on the Right Home Gym:  What Are Your Fitness Goals?

This is a serious piece of equipment, with the same type of features you’d find in a gym treadmill. If you’re tall, you’ll appreciate the 62-inch long platform, and if you run, you’ll love the quality suspension system that keeps the treadmill smooth and steady. One-touch incline sets your “hills” up to 15%, and the one-touch speed ranges from 0.5 to 12 mph. There are eight built-in programs or you can set your own pace.

Working out at home is always a great way to ensure a consistent fitness routine. On top of that, with a home gym (versus a gym membership) you don’t have to wait your turn to get on a machine, you don’t have to wipe off some stranger’s sweat before you use it, you don’t have to worry about people watching or judging you, and you don’t have to pay a monthly membership fee. You can pack your bag and head to a crowded gym, or you can get all of the same exercises on a single piece of equipment in the comfort of your own home. With a home gym, you work out when you want and however you want.

Pros: One pair of dumbbells replaces 15, quick and easy weight changes, comfortable grips

The ACSM recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, which can be broken down into multiple sessions as short as ten minutes.

There are many different types of resistance-based home gyms to choose from, but we can make it easy by separating them into two groups: Bowflex and everybody else. Their high quality machines and innovative resistance systems make Bowflex well known in this field. Bowflex machines are designed in the same style as many weight stack gyms with a seated and/or horizontal bench that allows you to perform exercises for the entire body. Bowflex primarily uses rods as its resistance system, but higher end models will use resistance plates. Another well known name in this group is Total Gym.

You’ll get two DVDs with full workouts that get your entire body in on the action. Because you use your own body weight as resistance, you can start slow and increase your efforts as you get stronger. Best of all, once your workout is done, the device folds in half for easy storage in a closet or under your bed.

The benefits of aerobic exercise are many: weight loss, stronger bones and muscles, better sleep, lowered levels of depression and anxiety, and even reduced risk of many types of cancer, to name just a few.

The AmazonBasics High-Density Round Foam Roller is made in the USA of polyethylene foam, which is easy to clean. The roller has a 6-inch diameter and weighs 1.2 pounds if you buy the 36-inch long one.

The ACSM recommends that healthy adults do strength training two or three times per week, engaging in eight to 10 different exercises focusing on varying muscle groups. Beginners should aim for eight to 12 repetitions of each exercise, using the amount of weight that leads to muscle fatigue within that set of reps.

On top of the machine itself, you also get an AbCrunch attachment, wing attachments, leg pull, dip bars, press up bars, squat stand and a large stability mat. Total Gym also provides training material like the Intermediate Program DVD, Total Body Workout DVD and Total Gym Exercise Flip Chart. As a final bonus, you get a complete nutritional program and meal plan to help you meet your fitness goals. We dare you to find another home gym with this quality and sheer number of extras.

There’s no one-size-fits-all home gym solution. Some are designed for serious weightlifters and may intimidate newbie exercisers, while others are better for beginners. You’ll also want to take into consideration how much space you have for the unit. Home gyms can have a massive footprint—but luckily smaller (and even portable) options exist. Here, the best home gyms to help you hit your fitness goals.

Which of these scenarios are you currently living with? You wake up at the crack of dawn to hit the gym. You rush home from work to eat quickly so you can get to the gym before it gets too crowded. You go straight to the gym after work and don’t get a chance to eat dinner until 8:00 at night.

Choose from blue, yellow, or magenta. You’ll also get an exercise guide that helps you maximize your board’s benefits.
