On the Caribbean island of Mustique, interior designer Veere Grenney has redesigned a bamboo house that is a study in neutrals and natural materials. The main bedroom, in a pavilion, has a bed from Soane. Green fabrics complete the room’s natural design while adding another colour to the simple scheme.

One of the guest bedroom at Bowood House in Wiltshire has walls covered in Colefax & Fowler’s ‘Bowood’ design – a pattern named after this house with interiors by John Fowler. The same pattern features on the bed valance, headboard, curtains and chair upholstery.

Two Designer’s Guild beds upholstered in ‘Brera’ linen furnish this small bedroom in the attic a Somerset country house. The calm turquoise and white scheme offers some colour to the room without making the small space feel too busy.

It’s a fail safe scheme of soft greys and silver but it’s the blue ikat bedding that gives this bedroom a boost in the style stakes.

‘My client’s bedroom is on the first floor, in what originally would have been the grand drawing room. The windows are lovely and big; they are the key to its appeal. I like the architecture to do the talking, so rather than obscure the windows with curtains, I’ve added plain bottom-up blinds. I have a weekness for pink, so I enjoyed including my client’s artwork… But neon is my favourite, hence the tube light from Mr Resistor,’ explains designer Harriet Anstruther of her client’s home in Chelsea, London.

Jean Louis Sibuet converted the bones of each hotel, and his business partner, Jocelyne, did the interior design. ‘We started with an oppurtunity in a particular place and time, says Jocelyne, ‘when we find somewhere we find it hard to walk away’. The Sibuet’s latest Provencal hotel is Domaine de la Baume, where each room has its own eclectic style including this bedroom that imbues character with yellow Pierre Frey wallpaper.

Cushions from Beaumont & Fletcher are among the golden accents in this spare room in the London flat of Hannah Cecil Gurney, the daughter of Claud Cecil Gurney, founder of the handmade wallpaper company de Gournay. The walls are clad in a glorious green hand-painted wallpaper. Follow Hannah’s lead and inject some glamour into your spare room – we promise you’re guests won’t be dissappointed!

It’s hard to put your finger on what is so special about Ett Hem, a 12-room hotel in the embassy quarter of Stockholm. Ett Hem translates as ‘a home’, and it feels as though it has been lived in for ages, even though it only opened in 2012 – everything is in just the right place and gives the impression of being brand new, though ‘new’ here means in great condition rather than fresh out of the box. It is as if, simultaneously, the house has been repainted, the curtains laundered, the original furniture recently returned from the upholsterers, the bookshelves reordered, the plants recently pruned – the way most of us would like our own homes, if only we could find the time. Interior designer Ilse Crawford was responsible for the look. The wall cabinet in the kitchen was designed by Studioilse, and the company also sourced many antiques, including chandeliers lit by real candles.

Interior designer Jane Taylor’s London flat is a box of brilliant, space-saving tricks. In this bedroom, the raised bed lifts up to reveal extra storage underneath.

A pretty soft green and white bedroom colour scheme makes for an elegant spare bedroom in this Manhattan townhouse designed by Hugh Leslie. Antique lamps from James McWhirter sit on rattan side tables from Soane; the leaf-print wallpaper is by Marthe Armitage.

As Ben explains, ‘I like using wallpaper because I love the layers of pattern and colour that it brings to a room.’ Soane’s delicate ‘Seaweed Lace’ wallpaper contrasts with the bold blanket from Pendleton in the main bedroom. A Marianna Kennedy ‘Spring’ lamp in blue adds a different colour to the room.

Maximising light and space was essential to show the owner’s post-war art and sleek French art deco furniture to their best advantage in this elegant Pimlico flat. In the bedroom nineteenth-century photographs bought from Portobello Market hang above the bed, while built in bookshelves flank the windows.

Use painted doors for a panelled effect headboard. Screw together painted wooden doors with hinges, available at most DIY stores to create a smart panelled screen.

The main bedroom of textiles designer Susan Deliss’ French country house is painted in the softest of blues – pink curtains in an Osborne & Little silk add a contrasting jolt of colour. A mid-century modern chair has been reupholstered in a fresh gingham and the bed quilt was hand-dyed with indigo.

‘Stark interiors, where pieces of furniture are isolated with nothing to soften them, don’t look inviting,’ says Stephan Eicker, who transformed this Victorian terrace house in Chelsea into a warm, inviting family home. In this bedroom he mixed black furniture with the owner’s artwork collection, subtly mirroring the rich shades with layers of vibrant fabrics.

Shades of white and make for a bright but serene scheme in the spare bedroom of Cameron Kimber’s house in New South Wales. The eighteenth and nineteenth-century dog pictures on the wall are just two of Cameron’s collection.

Upstairs in the main bedroom of this farmhouse in the Chilterns hangs a collection of John Nash watercolours. ‘I love them, they represent “my England”; it makes me happy looking at them,’ says the owner. The magnificent Tabriz carpet is reputed to have come from the house of the poet and arts patron Edward James, West Dean in Sussex. The neutral walls allow pieces such as the bold Tabriz carpet and dark wood chest to take centre stage.

Add an additional surround to your headboard, painted in a contrasting colour to further frame your bed. We particular love the addtion of the pictures – hung off centre, they are far more interesting.

This cheery wallpaper adds some personality to the fantastically functional storage solution surrounding the bed. We love how the feature light picks up on the tree pattern too.

The bedhead in the main bedroom was designed by the home’s owner, interior designer Robert Moore. The fabric, ‘Palma Large’ from Bernard Thorp (£75 per metre) is also used on a chair in the bedroom (not pictured) and for the curtains in the bathroom.

Here in the main bedroom, previously the banqueting hall, the crest of the Peruzzi family, bankers to Henry III and subsequently to Henry VIII, cover the walls. The Torre pre-dates Chaucer, Brunelleschi’s Duomo and Michelangelo’s David.

Made.com founder Chloe Macintosh’s bedroom is an elegant combination of deep blue walls and oatmeal coloured stripes. For fabric with a similar feel try Romo or Le Gracieux, who both do a striped cotton with a similarly painterly feel.

Silver, gold and bronze touches in the bedroom of one of Sarah Stewart-Smith’s daughters at their family home in Herefordshire. Wooden floors enhance the country-house feel and a cosy bedthrow adds warmth. Beams were exposed after Sarah discovered them behind plaster boarding in the charming 1786 cottage she now calls home.

House & Garden picture editor Owen Gale transformed his loft, turning the space into a bedroom, bathroom and music studio. Here is the bedroom, which has a ceiling height of just two metres. Farrow & Ball’s ‘All White’ was used to make the room feel light and spacious, while vertical tongue-and-groove panelling also worked to the same effect.

A suzani from Uzbekistan is complemented by a fabric covered headboard by Ensemblier London in this flat decorated by Tara Craig.

When renovating this Renovated Farmhouse, Maria Speake of Retrovious kept an eye out for continuity between rooms. For example, here in the spare room the walls are lined with ‘Sheep’ wallpaper from The Art of Wallpaper thus echoing the animal theme of the children’s bathroom.

Bold colours and a variety of smart textures and weaves showcase wool’s versatility in this bedroom. Green ‘Fennel Leaf’ walls (paint from Sanderson) and padded headboards feature in this twin room. Serena Foyle, a music designer for firework displays divides her time between her home in Edinburgh and her family’s Cadogan Square flat in London where she lives with her artist brother William. A portrait of Serena, her sister Antonia and William as children, by artist Dick Smyly, hangs in Serena’s bedroom.

In a valley on the Waddesdon Manor estate sits Flint House, an award-winning example of contemporary architecture commissioned by Jacob Rothschild. David Mlinaric, a long-time collaborator of the Rothschilds, helped with the interiors, acquiring the odd new piece of furniture and dipping into the Waddesdon storeroom, known as ‘the Pink Shed’, for others. In the main bedroom a feeling of cosseting warmth has been created in this otherwise white interior by painting two walls a rich teal and adding a large dark carpet in a sumptuous fabric. The sceme is tied together by the dark valance, while a convex mirror by Collier Webb adds sparkle and reflects the landscape.

Celebrated interior decorator Nicky Haslam opens the doors to his own west-London apartment, which is an elegantly playful showcase for his masterful use of scale and dramatic details, and his signature mix of the fake and the fabulous. Painted a rich dark brown, the canopy in the bedroom was inspired by a Cecil Beaton drawing. Nicky brought the bed with him from his former flat and found the table lamps in a second-hand shop.

The main bedroom in the Florescu’s modern Chelsea home follows a fresh decoration scheme – mainly white with touches of rich turquoise and sunny yellow. Through the door is a glimpse into Lizzie’s study – a studious sanctury with fitted bookshelves and a cosy armchair.

New England chic pervades the upstairs of restaurant owner Keith McNally’s Notting Hill house. Reclaimed floorboards are in the main bedroom, along with an antique iron hospital-style bedstead. Navajo blankets in rich shades of red are draped over the sofas and beds throughout the house. The effect is stylish and relaxed. If you are on the lookout for something similar, Sacha Knight’s new venture, Knight Mills, does a similar look. Influenced by American Indian designs, her handwoven cotton rugs measure 180 x 120cm and cost £390.

Anne-Marie Midy inherited this house in the south of France and has since lovingly restored it to refresh the interiors without losing the charm of the space. Anne-Marie Midy and her husband own the Mexican furniture company Casamidy.

A sense of timelessness combined with simplicity and sophistication characterises Arnaud Zannier’s collection of hotels, as well as his shoe business. It is a design ethos reflected in his family home near Ghent. Refined and relaxed, the home echews trneds and adopts classic style instead. Exposed wooden beams, full of knots and character, envelop the room and the bed, giving it a cosy cabin feel.

Henry Bikerton, the director of antique and reproduction fireplace company Jamb, revived his traditional Victorian townhouse with carefully chosen elements of English country house style. He shares this bedroom with wife Sophie and his home with his two children. You’d never guess this room once so darky and dingey because the previous occupier had blacked out the windows with pizza boxes! Now the he windows are adorned with crewel curtains, originally made by the interior designer Hugh Henry and salvaged from a skip.

In the home of artist Sarah Graham interest is added to a neutral colour scheme with Moroccan rugs and a dark green blind.

The neat attic bedroom of designer Hugh Leslie’s Chelsea studio is partially clad in horizontal tongue-and-groove boarding. This is a good trick to visually widen a small room. Try the Georgian range from The English Panelling Company, which would create a similar effect.

This bedroom in Soho Farmhouse features wood panelling. Mixing bare wood with white painted panels gives the room texture as well as a rustic feel. The pale scheme includes framed prints and large rugs.

This grey bedroom has a modern feel thanks to its muted colour palette and the smart black-and-white print on the wall, but the room has been decorated with traditional furnishings. A French wrought iron and marble side table by Raymond Subes sits on a Persian Royal Kurk Kashan carpet.

In the bedroom of this minimal Manhattan house designed by Rita Konig, the bed linen is from Monogrammed Linen Shop. The side table is by Christian Liaigre and the rug from Luke Irwin.

This kid’s bedroom in a Somerset country house has a pastel palette and a simple white bed frame, allowing mixed patterns to work well together. The grey and cream rug is ‘Cora’ from The Rug Company.

Against the backdrop of dip-dye fabrics and tactile textures, create a restful blue bedroom scheme with pretty pastels – and a statement bed.

Designer Mark Gillette makes careful use of colour and lighting in his flat, proving that even small spaces can handle a dark, dramatic palette of jewel-like amber offset with black and white. ‘I’m not afraid of colour, but I like to keep it contained,’ he says. The well-positioned light above the bed is useful for reading but also spotlights the white bedding, bringing light and space to the centre of the room. The clothes storage is also a clever design feature, both practical and beautiful.

The key to creating a cosy space? Three words: layering, layering, layering. Whether it’s pattern, colour or texture (all three is even better) more is more. To keep it from looking messy, make sure to repeat colours throughout the room and ensure there’s plenty of solid colour to break up the scheme.

On the second floor of this Edwardian villa designed by William Smalley, a bedroom has a bed upholstered in grey linen and mid-century Danish furniture.

Faringdon House in Oxfordshire was once home to ‘the mad boy’ Lord Berners, the inspiration for Lord Merlin in Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love. Now in the hands of his descendant Sofka Zinovieff, the character and eccentricity of the home and its history is lovingly preserved.

Ben Pentreath’s Dorset parsonage has a traditional country-style spare bedroom; the four poster bed is covered in a quilt made by Ben’s mother in the Seventies.

In their spare room, Ed and Polly Nicholson have chosen an elegantly simple four-poster bed from Max Rollitt, which ensures the focus is on the ‘Adam’s Eden’ wallpaper from Lewis & Wood.

If snakeskin bedding doesn’t send shivers down your spine then it can be a gorgeous neutral to add interest to a grey and cream colour scheme.

In the modern scheme of designer Sarah Chambers’ Victorian house she has used colour to add richness, and mirrored surfaces to add light. The curved headboard is covered in printed velvet by Créations Métaphores and edged with antiqued-brass studs.

Combining classical proportions and traditional furnishings with the informal elements of family life, this house in Cornwall has proved to be the perfect acquisition for its owners. The house was built in about 1840 for Reverend Samuel Wallis, a founding fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford, who inherited the estate and promptly commissioned Plymouth architect George Wightwick, a former assistant to Sir John Soane, to replace the existing house. An eighteenth-century bed in a spare room has a canopy and valance in a reproduction chintz to complement the period features.

The conversion of this Victorian terrace in west London was a collaborative effort between Thomas Croft Architects, John Cullen Lighting and designer Sarah Delaney. In the main bedroom, an exotic hand-painted De Gournay wallpaper depicting oriental birds amid trees and flowers on a silver background is combined with panelling salvaged from another local house refurbishment.

A golden rule of decorating is that you need to have neutral elements (white, or wood) to let the eye rest. Here, the rule is turned upside down, with the simple bed taking a backseat to the more unusual wardrobe, chair and wall art.

The bedroom of designer Kim Wilkie’s London flat features a bed from Heal’s and two sash windows, which allow light to pour into the room. The artichoke artwork above the bed (from the Hortus Eystettensis codex) highlights the green of the bed cover.

In this bedroom, an ornate mirror is used to mimic the pattern of the branches on the floral green de Gournay wallpaper. The mustard lamp shade matches the headboard and adds warmth to the room.

This bedroom is within a newbuild in California decorated by David Bentheim. A modern iron four poster bed is draped with a linen-covered duvet, wool blanket and monogrammed cushions. The colour scheme is kept calm and bright with white walls and painted panelled ceiling, Crittall-style french doors and window are both covered with soft grey roman blinds. A crystal chandelier adds the slightest touch of glam.

Classic-boat enthusiast and creative talent Katie Fontana’s love of craftsmanship and aesthetic simplicity resulted in the bespoke kitchen design company Plain English as well a charming houseboat and boathouse. The cushions in the guest house are from The Bell Jar in Norwich.

With its tropical floral designs, bright pink and orange hues and bamboo-inspired furniture and accessories, there’s no doubt that this bedroom scheme has been inspired by somewhere hot and humid.

The addition of a large basement extension to this Edwardian house freed up space on the upper floors for bright and capacious rooms, and a more fluid layout ideal for family living. Owners Dominic and Claire chose design duo Bunny Turner and Emma Pocock to decorate the home.

This gorgeous mix of jewel hued prints works best against a neutral backdrop but once you’ve got that nailed, go crazy. We love the pretty lace blind and posy vases which add to the bohemian feel.

The small bedroom of this Georgian flat designed by Ben Pentreath is filled with an antique wood four-poster bed. Simple sisal flooring is a practical and warm choice for the floor. The window is covered with a Svenskt Tenn blind.

We love this. The dark purple and grey colour scheme, industrial-style light fixture (another example of the bedside light being hung from above, rather than placed on a bedside table) and dappled feature wall all combine to create a beautifully moody aesthetic.

Designer Jonathan Tuckey redesigned this London mews house in Notting Hill for a former submariner. The house is designed to enable the internal layout to be adjusted; the main bedroom can be screened off from the staircase and roof terrace for added privacy.

Create a cosy atmosphere in the bedroom by layering patterned bedding. Some touch-me textiles in soft knits and faux-fur also up the comfort quotient.

The owners of this newbuild Bahamas beach house turned to trusted interior designer John McCall to provide their house with a British sensibility, practical furnishings and interiors that are not ‘too beachy’. In this bedroom white walls, ceiling, carpet and bedding is brought to life with patterned blinds, headboards and a colourful rug. All of the patterns are different, introducing an element of fun and vacation spirit.

Alastair Hendy was initially reluctant to view the Grade II listed 16th century property From the beginning, however, the house took a grip on Alastair and, although much had been obliterated, the bones of the house were all original and he was able to see its potential. It would be the start of a five-year restoration project that involved Alastair taking a crash course in 16th century building practices and engaging local craftsmen. The cosy spare room has beds under the sloped roof to create relaxing nooks.

From their first glimpse of this country house in Norfolk, its owners were captivated and, with the help of interior designer Veere Grenney, have put their stamp on it. In a glorious honeycomb of rooms for the youngest member of the family, there are enough small beds for the most riotous of sleepovers. In this bedroom ‘Belvedere’ linen in ‘Straw’ by Veere Grenney Associates has been used on the walls and bed draperies. The delicate colour amplified by sunshine yellow blankets.

When Rita arrived, she immediately found the interior plan verging on stark. The owner had warned her that she did not want pattern, but Rita thought this was negotiable. To soften up this bedroom, with its grey faux panelling, she upholstered the bed in a delicate two-tone Italian fabric by Idarica Gazzoni. The pattern is then repeated on a sheer window blind.

This mezzanine bedroom wraps around two sides of a small yet modern one room flat belonging to Banda Property CEO, Edo Mapelli Mozzi. The walls are painted a soft, warm off-white – the perfect backdrop for Mozzi’s gorgeous art collection. This choice of colour also adds a certain cosiness to the otherwise minimal scheme.

This Scandinavian-inspired bedroom pairs modern furniture and ceramics with wool and crisp cotton bedlinen for a simple, informal feel.

This basement bedroom features a canopy bed that was bought on Ebay for £100; an invoice found later revealed it had cost £10,000 originally.

Hidden in a Somerset valley, this restored Georgian house was an irresistible challenge for its owners, who put together a team including architect Ptolemy Dean for the painstaking restoration, which won a Georgian Group award in 2015.

A riotously patterned bedroom in Christine Van Der Hurd’s London mews house. The walls are lined in Christine’s ‘Carolina’ linen, with a silk ‘Ombre Wave’ carpet and ‘Petit Paravento’ linen on the headboard, which picks up the pinks in the vintage throw.

We’re not suggesting you take your bedroom outdoors (our climate’s not quite reliable enough!) but we do suggest you take inspiration from this colour scheme of mustard yellow and ecru, the stylish bed and linen featuring pastoral scenes and the accessories: wicker baskets used as a bedside table and battered vintage suitcases for further storage.

Famed for her work on Firmdale Hotels, Kit Kemp’s own home is unsurprisingly full of her trademark mix of pattern. The fabric used for the bedhead and cushions in the bedroom are by Christine Van Der Hurd.

Many people gravitate towards lighter hues for a bedroom but a dark colour scheme can make a refreshing change. The slate floors and painted brick walls of this warehouse style room are brought to life with moody tropical print bed linen, one of our lust-after items from the amazing new homewares range at Urban Outfitters.

The main bedroom of Ptolemy Dean’s Sussex newbuild is decorated in shades of blue and grey. This soothing scheme is finished with touched of dark wood. The curtains are in a floral fabric by G P & J Baker.

Trudi Ballard, press officer of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler has decorated her elegant Marrakesh house in a combination of English country-house style with traditional Moroccan elements. A rug – a gift from a friend – brightens the scheme, while the raffia ceiling lights from Henry Cath are a unifying element that has been used in all the bedrooms. The light-filled house opens out from a courtyard with a traditionally tiled, cloistered walkway to one side from which bedrooms lead off, each with its own terrace.

The owner of this London flat, a prolific collector of art and antiquities, has turned it into a veritable chamber of wonders, while ensuring that it also functions as a supremely comfortable home. The bed hangings are made from the reverse side of a Fortuny material and topped with antique, wood and gilt corona found in a Cotswold antique shop. On the wall is a famous portrait of Anne Hyde, Duchess of York, by Sir Peter Lely.

Earth-coloured walls, green touches and an oak bedside table make up a natural design in this bedroom, decorated by Gabby Deeming.

As much as possible, Anne-Marie tried to match the wall colours to those that her grandmother had used, keeping the bedrooms the same subtle colours, while adding ‘ribbons’ of colour to outline the architecture and ‘dress the room’.

The best thing about having a small or strangely shaped room is the opportunity it presents to use your space imaginatively. The alcove behind the door, in the home of designer Patrick Williams of Berdoulat design, has been turned in to a charming sleeping nook. Enclosed behind the curtain are shelves, and a lamp for reading. The room is painted in Farrow and Ball’s ‘Lamp Room Gray’; while the random-width floorboards were bought on eBay. Reclaimed drawers are used under the bed as storage.

Soft textured wallpaper, pale pinks and blues, pretty French-style furniture and a statement chandelier; this bedroom oozes decadent elegance.

In the Beverly Hills bedroom of designer Joe Nye, Claremont’s George Spencer ‘Palm Stripe’ wallpaper has been paired with a headboard covered in a dhurrie rug, and bedding from William-Sonoma Home; the red throw is from the Harnaz Cashmere collection.

The walls of this spare bedroom have been painted mauve to contrast with the elegant cream vanity. The pelmet box over the headboard offers a canopy effect, creating the feeling of a four poster bed.

The rustic trend – bare brick walls, exposed lightbulbs and distressed finishes – started in restaurants. Want to get the look at home? Use a variety of textures along with a vibrant accent colour such as red or turquoise.

Ensure it’s spring all year around with a fresh, zesty green colour scheme. Don’t be fearful of combining patterns and prints in the same colour but this is best applied in smaller touches – one feature wall, one piece of furniture and textiles added to a neutral base.

Pyjama Room founder Clare Hornby uses a simple colour scheme in her spare bedroom to ensure maximum impact.

Distressed ochre walls are the perfect choice for this Morroccan inspired room scheme.

With the distressed wood of the floor and walls, this room needs little else to give it character and warmth. Netural tones, natural textures and a touch of colour from a pretty patterned bed spread are a subtle but welcome addition.

As in their dining room and their upstairs hallway, the faux panelling in the spare room of Tarquin Bilgen and wife Isobel’s Suffolk farmhouse was painted by Alan Dodd. Prints and paintings of mountains, such as the one above the chest of drawers, provide a visual theme. Like the lamp? Vaughan do a similar sang-de-boeuf Chinese ceramic lamp base, £450 and shade, £177.

Blending the old with the new, Peggy and Hereschel Post – with the help of Tom Bartlett of Waldo Works – have created an astonishingly interesting space. In the bedroom round swirls echo those of the Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell paintings on the walls, but there is a spicy twist – a gigantic circular sculpture, a burst of metal spillikins by Lizzie Farey, hangs behind a modern four-poster bed.

In a bedroom at Cadland House in Hampshire, twin beds have block-printed quilts from India with deep yellows and blues pairing for a tasteful pop of colour. Yellow stripes are the backdrop to a gallery wall of artwork which also adds colour to the brown furnished room.

Scandinavian style isn’t just whites and woods – quirky prints and playful colour are Nordic hallmarks. (Have you seen Marimekko?). Our top tip? Keep clutter to a minimum and stick to clashing prints in similar colours. Scandi-licious.

Bring a redundant fireplace up to scratch for the party season by lining it with wallpaper. Simply take the dimensions of the inside of your fireplace, cut out the wallpaper to fit and Blu-Tac it into place. A few ornamental logs, tea lights or strategically placed baubles also help achieve this festive look.

If like this bedroom you have low ceilings, don’t be fooled into thinking you need to paint the whole room a bright white. A contrasting lighter colour on the ceiling can actually increase the feeling of height. This dark blue feature wall looks fantastic with the white washed floors and cream and blue textiles. No room for a bedside lamp? Steal this clever trick of low hanging ceiling lights instead.

In this black bedroom, inexpensive box frames allow you to create an ever-changing display whatever the mood. They look even more chic against black walls.

Writer, photographer and ironmonger Alastair Hendy has two very different homes – one aGrade II listed sixteenth century property that was a five-year restoration project. The other is this sleek minimalist loft in London. This bedroom shows how to create a clever en-suite out of a large space, while retaining privacy for the bathing area with a striking wooden screen.

A simple scheme is brought to life with a wall of typographic prints and some fabulous bedside lights. Accessorising at its best.

Henri Fitzwilliam-Lay, the owner of this Victorian country house in Shropshire has enhanced the interiors of this grand property with her signature mid-century aesthetic without compromising original features. This bedroom features panels of tropical Pierre Frey wallpaper and a matching tropical-themed lampshade. Plain bedding allows the leopard print headboard to take centre stage.

In the London apartment of Venetian designer Alvise Orsini, ricepaper has been painted to match two eighteenth-century Chinese wall panels found at auction. ‘It is impossible to tell the difference,’ he says. The gilded bed, possibly by Georges Jacob (1739-1814) was found in Paris, while the eighteenth-century velvet bedcover, embroidered with gold thread, was acquired at a Christie’s textiles auction.

‘The approach we took to the furniture was rather like our approach to the house as a whole,’ says Jonathan Tuckey, who imaginatively modernised this seventeenth-century chalet in the Swiss Alps. ‘We really liked a lot of the things that were in the house already and decided to hang on to them. But then there were other elements that we designed specially, such as the beds which are now really close to the ground and more informal.’

Measuring just 90 square metres, this home to a family of five in Chelsea, London, makes use of every inch of space. Designed by Eve Mercier, the small kids’ bedroom features two broad, wall-mounted benches (underneath the loft bed) that are easily transformed into beds (bedlinen is concealed below), while a third, drawer bed slides out when needed. ‘We wanted a versatile space that could easily be converted into a study if necessary,’ explains Eve. A circular, frosted window overlooks the bathroom.

A hanging statement light, like a chandelier, can really pull together a bedroom and give the eye a focal point. The crystal accents in this chandelier add an interesting element of light and texture when contrasted with the wood flooring and bed frame.

The easiest way to make a serious style statement in your home is with a bold paint choice. Keep the rest of the furniture and accessories neutral and let your paint do the talking.

When two architects bought one of the smallest houses in New York, they transformed the interior, creating a bijou interior with a sense of spaciousness that belies its exterior appearance.The main bedroom features a four-poster bed.

The walls in this eighteenth-century house in Bath are painted in Paint & Paper Library’s ‘Slate III’ and the floor is painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Slipper Satin’. A delicate metal four-poster bed is hung with antique mangle-cloth drapes, with cushions covered in vintage Swedish ticking and antique flags, all from Howe. The two striped rugs are Turkish, circa 1950. A French tôle peinte helmet wall light is above the twentieth-century Indian teak folding table, which probably came from an old civic building. A mid-century brass-framed oval Swedish mirror hangs by the window.

An archway was built to frame French windows that allow light to pour into a teal-coloured bedroom full of Moroccan treasures in Vanessa Branson’s 28-bedroom Marrakech riad hotel El Fenn, where artwork inhabits every wall.

Classic-boat enthusiast and creative talent Katie Fontana’s love of pure craftsmanship and aesthetic simplicity resulted in the bespoke kitchen design company Plain English as well a charming houseboat and boathouse. The interiors of ‘Stork’ are painted in Farrow & Ball paints.

The bedroom furniture in Steffanie Brown’s west London home is a mix of modern and vintage. The 1940s bedside tables come from Interior Eden, while the chair is from B&B Italia. Stephanie owns Notting Hill-based jewellers Laviandbelle, and used decorator Henri Fitzwilliam-Lay to help design her modern family home.

This open-plan bedroom designed by Suzy Hoodless and architect Johnny Holland of Hackett Holland, is the stuff of dreams. Wide-plank oak floorboards and geometric tiles create a division between the bedroom and a bathroom area with a free-standing ‘Vieques’ bath from Agape. Brass strips edge the fabric-fronted wardrobe wall. Graphic curtains made with fabric from Madeline Weinrib add colour to the white walls by the bed. See the rest of the house here.

The botanical trend for homes is still going strong. Think natural materials, flora and fauna-inspired motifs and a simple, clean aesthetic.

The key to making bright colours look amazing? Combine them with luxurious fabrics – velvet and silk work well, but so do crisp cottons, soft handcrafted knits and sturdy woods.

Proof that beige doesn’t equal boring is this Parisian bedroom. A pretty floral curtain and old-fashioned rocking chair adds personality to the relatively simple scheme.

The interior of this eco ‘dwelle-ing’ is flooded with natural light thanks to skylights, glass doors and windows. The effect is intensified in this garden room by white walls and a neutral colour palette (see our white room ideas and how to use white paint). Enough space is created on a mezzanine level for a bedroom and workspace, with a kitchen underneath.

The artist owners of this London house called on interior designer Beata Heuman to create a family home full of fun, distinctive design and punchy colours. A highly original space, unapologetically theatrical and oozing energy. ‘The owners are both artists. They have quite wild tastes and they love strong colours,’ says Beata. This bedroom, decorated in different shades of blue, is given a lift by a mustard throw on the bed.

House & Garden decoration editor Gabby Deeming has created a relaxed summer-holiday feel with a Mediterranean-inspired selection of wood and antique metal furniture. The oiled-oak ‘Clyde’ side table, is £550 from Pinch, while on the floor, the blue striped cotton dhurrie rug is from a selection at Guinevere antiques.

‘We needed somewhere we could live and work, with undeveloped buildings in which we could photograph catalogues, and with land for animals and a potential for a garden,’ says Matthew. They found the rundown farmhouse, Ham Court, which had once been the gatehouse to Bampton Castle. The property, on the edge of Bampton village and surrounded by 30 acres of land, provided them with an irresistible opportunity to breathe romance back into a series of neglected and derelict buildings.

Roses sit prettily on the bedside table of interior designer Louise Jones’ bedroom. The vertical lines of a bookcase – holding plenty of bedtime reading material – are echoed by the striped wallpaper.

We want to hibernate for the winter in this gorgeous room. A mix of untreated wood, chunky knits and fabulous fake-fur throws cosy up the space, while jewel-toned accessories add a contemporary but warming touch.

Colour blocking isn’t just a fashion trend. Start with one colour on the wall, then build your accent colours around it. Don’t forget to include neutral accents – white, black, grey and wood will help draw the eye to your carefully-chosen colour scheme.

We love the combination of styles in this room, from paisley print bedding to a geometric rug to a sixties style light and swing chair. Also note how the bed is located in the middle of the room – a styling idea to steal perhaps?

In the main bedroom of this London house, two rows of framed antique pressed flowers bought from the owner’s friend Charlie McCormick line the walls. The headboard, which is upholstered in a hand-dyed pink velvet by Kirsten Hecktermann, with the same velvet used for the panelling between the bedroom and bathroom. Kirsten copied the colour from a small piece of eighteenth-century ribbon that belonged to Henrietta, who describes it as being – ‘the colour of rhubarb stems’. Above the chimneypiece is a pair of candle sconces from another friend – Lulu Lytle of Soane, on the Pimlico Road.

Want to update your bedroom for spring? Add floral touches to a crisp neutral scheme. A cluster of pretty vintage style postcards is a stylish adddition above a headboard.

Colour is added to this neutrally decorated bedroom in a Dutch farmhouse using a blue bedspread from The Conran Shop. The bright, modern bedding contrasts beautifully with nineteenth-century antique furnishings including a cupboard, side table and folding screen.

The owner of this Kensington apartment is Sofia Barattieri di San Pietro, who conceived and masterminded upmarket fashion website Motilo. She wanted to create a glamorous, ‘international’ look with an art-deco flavour in her home, which she achieved with the shared vision and cultural understanding of interior designer Paolo Moschino (they are both Italian). The main bedroom is decorated mainly in cream and white, with brass accents in the bedside tables and the Fifties lamps by Maison Charles; the print above the bed is by Gary Hume. The adjoining bathroom is furnished in a similar cream and brass scheme; ‘I am so tired of chrome,’ Paolo explains.

The main bedroom of Ben Pentreath’s Georgian country house is painted in what he lovingly refers to as ‘freshly laid cowpat’ – an earthy green from Papers & Paints, officially known as ‘4-050’. The bed is covered with a fresh Indian printed-cotton cover.

This 10-year-old son’s bedroom in a large Chelsea flat designed by Sophie Ashby features a swirl of clouds billowing across a cerulean sky, a mural by Surface View – a copy of Constable’s Study of Cirrus Clouds. It is both cosseting and dramatic.

‘Visual truth, nothing fake,’ he would say. ‘You cannot restore a medieval tower to its original condition – you would have only stone. So be honest with what you add.’

For a scheme in House & Garden’s August 2017 issue, Acting Decoration Editor Ruth Sleightholme worked with wicker designs and French textiles in a bedroom with distressed paintwork and tiled floors in Atelier Vime’s eighteenth-century hôtel particulier, Hotel Drujon.

The main bedroom at Faringdon House, the Oxfordshire home of writer Sofka Zinovieff, is full of character and pattern as one might expect from the house that used to belong to eccentric Lord Berners, the composer, artist and writer who was immortalised in Nancy Mitford’s novel The Pursuit of Love as the whimsical character Lord Merlin.

On a budget?Try rugs from Urban Outfitters for the bedhead (starting from around £35); while the Blåvinge fabric from Ikea (£4 per metre) is similar to the bedcover.

The spare bedroom of interior designer Diana Sieff’s home (a converted chapel in Oxfordshire) has a vintage chic look, with a trio Lebanese plates hanging on the wall. ‘Isfahan’ porcelain plates by OKA, £179 for a set of four, would create a similar look.

This is the spare room of interior designer Gytha Nuttall’s modern family home.

Designer Jane Taylor has ingeniously incorporated storage into her small bedroom in Chelsea. Wardrobes and cupboards are concealed behind panelling made by Sympatico Joinery, which is painted in Zoffany’s ‘White Clay’, from £41 for 2.5 litres of emulsion. Shallow cubbyholes in the panelling next to the bed function as bedside tables.

As this 1970s-style sleeping space shows, interior design often comes full circle – just like with fashion. For a look that’s chic rather than kitsch, mix in some modern elements for an inspired, not imitating look.

The main bedroom in Diane Nutting’s manor house in Wiltshire features a showstopping Colefax and Fowler chintz fabric from the 1970s, since discontinued. The sister-in-law of Diane’s first husband was Nancy Lancaster, the owner of the company.

Like many a family home, there are a mixture of tastes present in the home of Anne-Marie Midy and Jorge Almada, furniture designers and owners of Casamidy. For starters, the two prefer different materials – Anne-Marie likes metal, while Jorge loves leather – but the two have created a home with a uniformity of spirit while still reflecting their personal tastes. In the master bedroom, the hand forged iron ‘Diego bed’ by Anne-Marie takes centre-stage.

Patterns are a recurring theme in Tarquin and Isobel Bilgen’s house; they beautifully match the beams that line the wall in their bedroom. Joss Graham is a good port of call for unusual fabrics; their embroidered horse cover from Uzbekistan (£2,800) dates from about 1900 and would work well as a bedhead. Similarly, an 18th-century French quilt from Katharine Pole (£1,850) is a close match to the Bilgen’s bedcover, made with fabric from Bennison.

We often think only big, bold colours can make an impact, but when done right, pretty pastels can have the same effect. The muted wallpaper, palest of pink pillowcases and fresh flowers combined with ornate furniture and tactile textures makes for a beautiful bedroom scheme.

These aren’t your granny’s florals. From this monochrome wonder wall from Galerie to Vivienne Westwood’s dark wallpaper designs (yep, she does that now too), it’s time to embrace the dark side.

Tongue-and-groove panelling adds New England-style charm to the spare room (in what used to be the butler’s pantry) of this 1830s London house restored to its original style by interior designer Max Rollitt. The touch of a chair used in place of a traditional nightstand is particularly charming.

The decoration of this bedroom by Hackett Holland is dramatic, yet still has an element of restraint. Beautifully proportioned, unfussy pieces don’t fight with the dark paint (‘Smoke Blue’ from Marston & Langinger), while pockets of colour are added by art and an Ikat lampshade.

A unique chest of drawers with a sketch of a columned building livens up the bedside in this London home designed by Freddy van Zevenbergen. Freddy says the owner ‘wanted it to feel a bit like Loulou’s,’ Robin Birley’s louche-luxe private members’ club in Mayfair, which Lambart & Browne designed in 2012.

In the bedrooms of Monteverdi’s Villa Muri Antichi, the hotel’s designer, Ilaria Miani has coupled wooden beams and marble floors sourced in Italy, with beds built by craftsmen in Sarteano at the foot of the hill. The C&C Milano bedlinen – dyed in shades of rose, eggshell blue and oatmeal – is handmade in Milan. The walls are finished in what is normally an outdoor render, but the effect is smooth and cool to the touch.

In a large, high ceilinged room a print wallpaper can have a dramatic effect. Pendant lighting, a vintage suitcase as a bedside table and choice artwork further add to this seriously stylish scheme.

A Christopher Côme sculpture hangs in the bedroom of this LA home by Paris based designer Chahan Minassian.

This traditionally designed bedroom features an antique four-poster bed with red bedding and matching curtains. The scheme also includes dark antique furniture, including an elegant console table used as a bedside table.

A simple cot is made comfortable by duvets and pillows in House & Garden’s July 2017 scheme of warm olive and golden tones with contrasting lace pieces and modern brass accessories.

Moving from a tall town house to a west-London mews enabled interior designer Caroline Riddell to enjoy a more open-plan way of living. Upstairs in Caroline’s daughter’s bedroom, ‘Vertical Stripe’ wallpaper from Timorous Beasties lines the walls. It’s a masterclass in space management.

Bold pattern adds character to the main bedroom in interior designer Karen Howes’s London flat. A porcelain lamp by Jonathan Adler illuminates the bedroom. This is the larch ‘Carnaby Flame Lamp’ with a handmade paper shade. It is available in a number of different colourways and costs £295. For a modern take on tie-backs, Karen’s team had the tassels dip-dyed so that they gradate from white to taupe. This is a bespoke service offered by Spina Design and prices start from £354 per tie-back. John Lewis also sells a dip-dye tie-back for £25.

The design of the bedrooms at Soho House’s High Road House in Chiswick is thoughtful rather than overt. The simple panelled rooms have no wardrobes, just Shaker-style pegs.

Make neutrals modern by playing with texture and colour. Look for watercolour effects and painterly touches.

Grove Lodge, the Cambridge home of Tim Knox, director of The Fitzwilliam Museum, and landscape designer Todd Longstaffe-Gowan, provides the perfect setting for the couples growing collection of artwork and curiosities. In the spare bedroom a gallery wall of antique pictures has been coupled with a brass bed-frame and gingham bedspread.

After visiting her friend Kathryn Ireland in France’s Tarn region, Anne Halsey bought a French farmhouse retreat there and enlisted the help of the decorator to create a relaxed space perfect for entertaining. This twin guest bedroom is decorated with a pastel pink colour scheme featuring white gauzy canopies, making for a pretty and sophisticated room that would be perfect as a girls’ bedroom.

‘I wanted the house to be comfortable above all, and for me colour is very much part of that,’ says Jacquie Rufus-Isaacs of her eighteenth-century farmhouse in the Cotswolds. With the help of her friend, decorator Scott Maddux, she has enhanced the house with a slightly unusual palette, which is no surprise as Jacquie’s real love is painting. She has a studio in a converted farm building where she works on her vibrant, expressive still lifes. Furnishings are equally various and include a sofa is upholstered in a Lelièvre stripe in the main bedroom, inherited antiques, junk-shop finds and a selection of paintings. These range from eighteenth-century landscapes to works by living artists including Barbara Stuart and Ken Howard. Jacquie’s eye ensures a harmonious composition.

The Pink Room in Bradwell Lodge is fun, feminine and fancy. A bold Bernard Thorp fabric, ‘Brimble’, has been used on the walls and bed, and for the blind: this creates a lovely sense of continuity in the space.

In this north London house, designed by Caroline Holdaway, the light wall panelling and white bedlinen act as a foil for various patterned Celia Birtwell fabrics in the main bedroom. The owner Paul says, ‘It’s the most lovely house to wake up in. We never completely lower the bedroom blinds, so we wake up with the light. In spring, the views are of blossom, in summer of leaves, in winter the sky.’

Richard Taylor and Rick Englert have built a Jacobean-style manor at Whithurst Park in Sussex. It took a year to get planning permission and two more to build. The result bears some of the signatures of the prodigy houses built in the era, such as Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire and Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. This spare bedroom on the second floor has a four-poster canopy bed and moulded fireplace in keeping with the manor’s Jacobean look.

This bedroom in Shoreditch House by Soho House is decorated in a neutral and stylish scheme with red features. Panelling makes the space cosy; painted in light grey, it doesn’t shrink the already small space.

Make your office space work for you with these clever design ideas

Tasked with reinventing a conservative Park Avenue apartment, New York-based designer Sandra Nunnerley has created a modern, relaxed space that has an aura of calm. In the main bedroom, the headboard is in Holland & Sherry ‘Spectator’ fabric, with Mike and Doug Starn’s ‘Structure of Thought’ print hung above it; the doorway to the left leads seemlessly through to a dressing room to leave the main room uncluttered. Sandra describes the result as ‘timeless luxury and refinement’, without sacrificing a sense of modernity.

A silver frame and accented wall light compliment the muted blues, greys and greens in the spare bedroom of Giles Vincent’s west London townhouse. The blue striped headboard adds a nautical touch to the room, while fresh flowers on the bedside table brighten-up the space.

This is the one bedroom at the tiny Central Hotel & Café in Copenhagen, in the Vesterbro neighbourhood. The room necessarily makes use of the tiny space and even tinier windows, but the green walls with wooden accents adds plenty of interest to a potentially boxy bedroom.

‘We drove the neighbours mad,’ says Jos White, talking about the three-year renovation of the family’s town house on one of the most desirable streets in Manhattan’s West Village. After extending, gutting and completely renovating their six-storey town house to create open-plan interiors tailored for family living. The house is an enchanting mix of inimate and open plan – the bedroom is no exception. It has a neutral palette accented by a nineteenth-century trunk from Hilary Batstone reupholstered in pink.

The rich, witty and wonderfully eclectic interiors of designer Nicky Haslam’s sixteenth-century, gothic-revival hunting lodge have long been coveted by all of us here at House & Garden. So when we heard he was producing a furniture range for Oka, based on pieces from his own home, we were extremely excited. Following his motto ‘use something red and gothic in each room and you’re all right,’ the collection has ogees, points, tracery and quatrefoils a-plenty, offering the chance to recreate at least a part of his look. House & Garden shot the collection in situ at the house. Here in the bedroom ‘The Original Orangery Stepped’ bedside table, works beautifully with the vertical floral border on the wall (a lovely decorative idea for older houses) and antique chintz bed canopy.

This small country style bedroom features a single divan bed base, furnished with a bespoke headboard covered in a floral linen from Cabbages & Roses. The crisp cotton bedding is overlaid with a quilt and the walls are painted in a deep green – ’12B25′ Armour Guard acrylic-enamel eco-friendly paint from PaintPlus. After 40 years at Colefax and Fowler, owner Wendy Nicholls is clear about what makes a good interior, and the decoration of her London home reflects the style she has honed both personally and professionally.

The stuff of dreams. Author and designer Paul Golding spent seven years restoring this this exquisite 18th century palazzo in Malta. ‘I couldn’t resist its romantic decay!’ Built by the distinguished Maltese architect Francesco Sammut, the bedroom is stenciled with a pattern copied from a Carmelite convent in Medina. The chandelier is from Julian Chichester, while the magnificent gesso and silver gilt bed and table were commissioned from Brighton-based furniture maker Lincoln Cato.

Layers of pattern decorate the main bedroom in the Hampshire home of designer and antiques dealer Max Rollitt. The room is lined in Pierre Frey’s ‘Sans Papillons’ wallpaper and features a canopy bed.

Relocating to Oxford after 15 years in Japan and Hong Kong, the owners of this Victorian house put together a team of experts to create a mostly open-plan layout full of intriguing design details. Despite the architectural strength, the house unfolds slowly, allowing the eye to pick up intricate details and layered textures as you wander through. It is a scheme that strikes the balance between formal and family living in the brief to American interior designer Susan Ferrier of McAlpine. The main bedroom is decorated in a muted neutral scheme.

Light grey walls and a gallery wall above the bed – step inside the elegant bedroom of our location editor. Soft colours carefully combined with playful accessories add character to the space in Lavinia Bolton’s Chelsea flat – an object lesson in unassuming good taste, as well as testament to her own creativity and enterprise.

This bedroom in the home of designer Bridie Hall uses a clever balance of restful colour and lively pattern.

Yellow and grey is a classic colour combination that works particularly well for a bedroom. Adding a small accent in slightly different shade (note the lime green vase) makes it look modern.

A bedroom design that has turned this tiny box room in to a jewel. The owner of this family home in Chelsea has a collection of Fifties, Norwegian abstract-expressionist art; basing his scheme around the colours in the paintings, designer Stephen Eicker cleverly mirrored the rich shades with a vibrant fabric by Claremont on the walls, and antique textiles on the bed.

Twin beds are ideal for this guest room. The Colefax & Fowler ‘Snow Tree’ wallpaper in aqua works perfectly with a view to the garden outside, creating a light and verdant bedroom. All the tones and patterns are harmonious and soft. The armchair has a classic bullion braid trim and the lantern continues the garden theme of the room as its design would be fitting for outdoor use.

When it comes to storage (especially in a small space) the more the merrier. Choose beds and nightstands that can all do double duty. Top it all off with a witty, decorative touch – in this case, a print out of a favourite poem affixed to the wall with washi tape and framed.

It’s rare for interior designers to act as their own clients, but that’s how Karen Howes decided to tackle the refurbishment of a run-down basement flat of a purpose-built 1901 London block. She briefed the team at Taylor Howes Designs, leaving the property as a building site while she went on a three-week trip to China and returned to find it finished. In the spare bedroom, she opted for a ‘Kazak’ roman blind by Tissus d’Hélène the blues of which tie into the bedroom’s artwork and contrasts with the orange desk chair, colours which run throughout the home.

The designer Jane Gowers discovered her London terrace house by chance, but its restoration and decoration have been the result of good judgement and a sympathetic approach.

This sweet attic bedroom, which belongs to designer and House & Garden contributor Ben Pentreath, can be found at the top of his gently restored Georgian country house. The twin beds sit nicely in the small space and the cream panelling brings light to the room.

An architecturally significant building from the Fifties by Victor Gruen (the architect who invented the shopping mall), the owners wanted to retain the period character by filling it with classic mid-century pieces. ‘These houses are often furnished with Eames and Mies ven der Rohe, which is just too obvious. While the house, and the furniture I have used in it are historical, I never want the space to feel like a museum,’ he says. ‘I want to stay true to the period, but reframe it for today; the mood now is fresher, softer, more subtle and subdued.’

Detailing and subtlety of colour are trademarks of designer John Minshaw’s interiors, and the barn conversion he shares with wife Susie illustrates this perfectly. The bedroom pairs William Yeoward bedlinen with a blue headboard and black furniture.

The striking tile-effect wall and natural stone features do the talking in this bedroom, so all that’s needed is some crisp white linen and a discreet matching set of bedside tables and lamps. The effect is a slightly rustic but fresh-feeling space.

Heidi Lightfoot and Steve Gibbons wanted a mid-century house and found this Thirties house in rural Hertfordshire. Built in 1936 by the renowned public sector architect Mary Medd, Sewell’s Orchard was apparently unpopular with the locals at the time, who likened its monopitch roof and pared-back design to that of a factory. This neutral spare room is brightened up with the addition of prints and a lively geometric blanket.

Feeling studious? A simple desk and an upholstered chair from Robert Kime creates a study area in the corner of this bedroom. The bedroom is elegant in its simplicity. The curtains are unlined with aquamarine silk from Claremont, with an inner curtain of linen. ‘When the sun shines, I draw the curtains, which throws a luminous light everywhere,’ says the owner. The walls are covered with tadelakt – a decorative lime-based plaster originally from Morocco.

In the bedroom of this old French chateau, the decadent canopy bed is footed by a coral Gustavian-style bench. Similar wallpaper can be found at Cole & Son and Colefax & Fowler.

The bedroom of artists Linda and David Heathcoat-Amory is a graceful high-ceilinged cube. To the left of the four-poster bed hangs a Pissarro drawing; the painted pale-blue and white stripes on the walls were inspired by the photographer Derry Moore’s house.

The main bedroom, with its en suite bathroom, is one of designer Nicholas Spencer’s great triumphs in terms of use of space in this Holland Park flat. The bed is positioned on one side of this division, facing the window, meaning the owners can lie in bed and watch the sun set. The walls are dressed in Fromental wallpaper, ‘Butterflies’, while a coloured handblown glass pendant light, ‘Spindle Shade’ (£475) from Rothschild & Bickers adds a shot of colour.

Brown, white, and beige colours give Sarah Stewart’s bedroom at her refurbished 1786 cottage in Herefordshire a pared-down feel, emphasized by minimalist light fixtures. Her raised bed is a unique way to give the room a fluid sense of space.

Mix your mid-century furniture with folky textiles and fresh flowers for a look that’s bohemian cool.

Create a fresh, Moroccan-style look using brightly coloured fabric and accessories against a crisp white background. A DIY trim of cotton pom poms (‘Sherbert Pips’, £7.95 a metre from Clothkits) on the bedcover adds an inspired touch, while the matching Designers Guild curtains and cushion (‘Savine’, £140 a metre) ties it all together.

Something new and colourful is what I thought I’d do,’ says interior designer Gytha Nuttall of the decoration of her converted nineteenth-century schoolhouse in Battersea. ‘But as the project developed, slowly I returned to all the muddy colours I love best.’

How to do stylish modern living in the country? Located on a plot of farmland on the Atlantic coast of Long Island, interior designer Veere Grenney used wood as a dominant note. The local architecture was also a big influence, as displayed in the boarded walls.

Ett Hem, a hotel in Stockholm, is filled with great design ideas. A clever space-saving idea for smaller bedrooms is this bedside table, which is built into the wall.

All the furniture in this bedroom at Soho Farmhouse is wooden, including the panelling of the sink in the ensuite glimpsed through the doorway. This was designed to capture the Upstate New York cabin feeling.

This simple, rustic bedroom in Lamb’s House features a beautiful wooden four-poster bed. White walls and minimal decoration allows it to stand out.

Combining classical proportions and traditional furnishings with the informal elements of family life, this house in Cornwall has proved the perfect acquisition for its owners. Before moving in, they asked the interior designer, architectural historian and natural paint expert Edward Bulmer for his help. ‘Edward has a marvellous eye,’ says the owner. He has a great feel for colour and he is fantastic at arranging furniture and pictures.’ For his part, Edward says that these are delightful clients, and are unusually united on aesthetic decisions. Despite their very different backgrounds, they share a taste for the modest grandeur of English country-house style, for antique rugs, traditional chintz and books. The wall is painted in ‘Ochre’ from Edward Bulmer Natural Paints.

This bedroom is full of texture, with an exposed brick wall setting off the earthy palette. One of a pair of lights by Swedish designer Poul Henningsen hangs over the bed in this spare room, which is also lit by a skylight. The bedspread is by Brigitte Singh, based on a Mughal design, and the cushions are made from an antique Japanese obi sash.

The challenge for interior designer Penny Morrison in this Victorian terrace was to create a home for a bachelor – without the stereotypical furnishings.

In a cosy London mews house owned by designer Caroline Riddell, open-plan living is made cosy with warm touches to this family home and office.

Floorboards of Baltic pine were laid throughout the first floor of Robin Muir’s house designed by Caroline Holdaway, including this spare bedroom. The room’s vibrant features include a black-and-white striped rug and The Rug Company’s Vivienne Westwood cushion. Architect Jonathan Tuckey wanted to combine ‘twenty-first-century comforts with seventeenth-century character’ in this timber-lined chalet in this Swiss Alps, which he imaginatively modernised. Jonathan paired the idea of old and new in this first-floor bedroom with a pair of Fifties rosewood beds from Modernisticks and kept the original plywood walls and floorings, which compliments the subtle decoration of the rest of the chalet.

Nothing defines modern style like a total clash of pattern, print, colour and era. The trick? Make sure to break it up with plenty of neutral elements – a solid coloured piece of furniture or rug.

Decoration in a bedroom boils down to a few key elements: pick a theme, add interesting accents and a dash of contrast. In this case, the contrast comes from the more masculine chrome touches and button-detail cushion.

Velvet cushions and a spray-lacquered Danish desk from Ebay add to the blue theme, while the Zak + Fox fabric on the headboard provides a strong contrast. Animal motifs and a small workspace make this a perfect kid’s bedroom.

Tactile surfaces in the main bedroom of a London house designed by Shalini Misra include a leather floor, tiled wall and a wooden-slatted ceiling. CTO Lighting’s ‘Solaris1100’ pendant in brass is similar to the one here. It is 25 x 110cm diameter and costs £6,648. On the floor, Shalini used the ‘Tan Brogue Border Briquettes’ leather floor tiles from De Ferranti, which are supplied on a marine ply base (from £900 a square metre). ‘We wanted to use something really plush and these are so beautiful to walk on,’ she says. She also called upon De Ferranti, a specialist in floor and wall surfaces, for the 3D ceramic ‘Deco’ tiles that line a wall of this room. They cost £858 for a square metre.

Art collector Valeria Napoleone’s passion for collecting works by female artists is reflected in her bold London house.

The soft setting of this room, with classic period features like cornicing and the palest grey colour scheme, is given a touch of the exotic with a carved wooden bed and Eastern-inspired printed and textured textiles.

In the main bedroom of Ed and Polly Nicholson’s Wiltshire home, an eighteenth-century lacquered chest, which provides a contrasting tone, stands between windows with curtains in ‘Secret Garden’ by Raoul Textiles.

In the main bedroom in Hannah Cecil Gurney’s London flat has hand-painted silk cushions and a Burmese lamp pick up on the green in the ‘Badminton’ wallpaper by de Gournay, the wallpaper company her father founded in 1986.

Nina Campbell made the apple-green silk bed hangings in the spare room of Diane Nutting’s manor house in Wiltshire, while the eiderdowns come from Counting Lambs, an excellent source for traditional silk versions like the ones in this house. They are available in a range of pretty colours and prices start from £399 for a single.

On the four-poster bed in her ‘mix and match’ West Sussex manor house, Sophie Conran has an antique quilt from Garden House Antiques in Petworth, which specialises in English and American patchwork quilts from 1800 to 1920, and antique English and French textiles. The period print is paired with neutral paint colours from Farrow & Ball – ‘Slipper Satin’ for the walls, and ‘Lamp Room Grey’ on the woodwork.

For House & Garden’s Carole Annett, a passing request for decorating advice from her friend, the interior designer Emma Sims Hilditch, turned into the top-to-bottom redecoration of her Surrey house. Carole chose Zoffany’s ‘Eleonora’ paper for a spare room.

We never had dreams of fairytale weddings or being a princess when we grew up, but we have to admit that a gorgeous canopy bed was on our wishlist. Maybe it’s not too late…?

Stylist Alexander Breeze’s bedroom is painting in a very matt yet rich grey-green: ‘Olive’ by Farrow & Ball. He bought an inexpensive bed and painted it himself. The striking plywood headboard was designed by Breeze and made with the help of bespoke laser cutting service Cut Laser Cut.

Known for their irreverent take on English country-house style, the American duo behind Madcap Cottage have created a home filled with outlandish pattern and colour.

As her book My Greek Island Home hits shops, we travelled to a small village on the Greek island of Lesvos to meet Claire Lloyd, who runs a guest house with her partner, artist Matthew Usmar Lauder. The bedroom in the guest house is combined with the living area. White spaces and sparse furnishings including found, mended and made objects make the most of the sun-drenched setting.

In a double-fronted Georgian town house in Ludlow, Caroline Harrowby has used a soft colour palette and elegant furnishings to enhance the classical proportions of once dark interiors.

The owners of this west London house employed a skilled team to restore and complement its original features, and create a home with a feeling of permanence after a lifetime of moving. The house is a tall, mid-nineteenth-century white stucco building that they wanted to work well for twenty-first-century family life. ‘We were determined to avoid beige “banker chic”,’ the owner explains. A portrait by Betsy Podlach above the Howe fireplace inspired the palette for the main bedroom.

Furniture has been kept to a minimum in the small spare bedroom of interior designer Sarah Chamber’s Victorian terraced house in South London. Lack of space means furniture has been kept to a minimum, with interest added instead by a rich autumnal colour scheme that contrasts brown walls with red accents. This is an easy idea to apply to any small room where space for objects is at a premium. Instead transform the mood of your space using the walls and upholstered furniture as your canvas.

This Victorian flat was designed by duo Lambert & Thurnherr who brought their international flavor to the space, creating a home that is both comfortable and individual. Blue and white fabrics give this bedroom a fresh feel.

The West Country location combines rural peace, privacy and views across fields and woodland with the convenient proximity of a main road; the architecture is a gentle mix of classical symmetry and vernacular charm; and the interior decoration matches furnishings from a previous house with new additions, including some specially commissioned pieces.

This bedroom is an ode to antiquity with touches of the Neoclassical, Empire Style and Classical-inspired littered throughout the space, most of which was designed and made by Alexander himself – the headboard with colours of an Attic vase, for example. Follow Breeze’s lead, pick up a pot of paint and get experimenting with patterns and motifs from your favourite era!

There can be few House & Garden readers who are unfamiliar with the cult names and sought-after colours of the Farrow & Ball paint chart. Friends and business partners Martin Ephson and Tom Helme, the men responsible for planting it firmly in the nation’s consciousness, sold the company in 2006, and have since launched textiles company Fermoie. House & Garden decoration editor Gabby Deeming created a pretty scheme using their fabrics. The padded headboard, upholstered in the ‘Rabanna’ cotton is from Fafio, while the sofa and chair are both from Howe.

Be inspired by this bedroom, which gives the four-poster bed a modern makeover thanks to bright colours and graphic prints against a white backdrop.

The white polished walls and light grey colouring of the bed curtains, light fixture, and wall décor make for a mature and stylish bedroom in the Herefordshire home of Sarah Stewart-Smith, where she’s refreshed and renewed the original character of a 1786 cottage.

In a daughter’s bedroom, the ceiling has been painted to look like a circus tent, using Farrow & Ball’s ‘Rectory Red’ and Paint and Paper Library’s ‘Slate I’.

The assortment of rugs adds warmth to this bedroom in designer Harriet Anstruther’s Sussex farmhouse.

Situated between Marrakesh and the Atlas Mountains, the holiday home of Colefax & Fowler’s Trudi Ballard, is decorated in a combination of English country-house style and traditional Moroccan elements. The site of the house is perfect: down a dirt track or two and into an olive grove, where the house seems almost part of the landscape. At the end of a gravel path is a studded wooden door leading to a shaded walk and then a cool, airy hall through french windows. This bedroom has a pretty delft-blue palette, with an Indian cotton bedspread and plates above the chimneypiece from Fez.

Henri Fitzwilliam-Lay, the owner of this Victorian country house in Shropshire, has enhanced the interiors of this grand property with her signature mid-century aesthetic without compromising original features.

Formed by turning four adjoining flats into a single living space, this north London conversion is filled with its owners’ impressive collection of art. A restrained, modern interior has been created by Tom Bartlett from Waldo works. The light is ‘Heracleum’ by Moooi. Tom suggested wallpapering a screen to stand behind the bed, rather than the wall, to add visual interest.

The spare bedroom in this glamorous chalet in the French Alps was designed by Kate Earle using a neutral palette and myriad clever details. Case in point: the painted frieze and grouping of wicker mirrors above the bed, which were bought at the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair.

This design scheme is all about sumputous colour and texture. Soft pinks and rich raspberry reds are combined with a heavy piled rug, plentiful cushions and throws, plus a drape above the bed. The result is glamorous and very inviting.

The pewter chandelier is fitted with lampshades that match the wallpaper and curtains in the bedroom of a Christopher Howe-decorated house in Bray.

Above the bed in Julia Barnard’s Somerset cottage hangs a Fante flag from Ghana, with curtains in ‘Montpelier’ cotton from Robert Kime. The lampshade and eiderdown were both made from antique Ottoman block prints found in Turkey.

“Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory,” Coco Chanel famously advised. The same technique can be used for your home. The removal of a bedside table – leaving the flowers and books on the floor – add an inspired touch to this room.

Virginia White’s harmoniously diverse decoration of Lucy Turvill’s award-winning newbuild in Suffolk includes this spare room. Blinds made in a Florence Broadhurst fabric dress the narrow windows. It makes a colourful contrast with the neutral walls and flooring, including a red side table by Virginia White. A beautiful tapestry blanket from Blodwen lies across the bed.

The main bedroom in Susan Deliss’s country house in France has a simple headboard made from an antique suzani. The bed is spread with an antique quilt, hand-dyed by Susan with indigo. She has mounted an antique Ikat textile to create an artwork for the wall.

This Edwardian house with bright modern interiors was extended with the addition of a basement, creating a brighter, larger space that flows perfectly for better, more modern family living.

The main bedroom of Jo Vestey’s Oxfordshire farmhouse has Jo’s photographs on display and a Japanese light on the desk. Exposed beams, wooden floorboards and the desk contrast nicely with the white rug and walls, giving an overall look that is both clean and rustic.

The late Lady Hindlip, the designer owner of this home, was described as a ‘serial mover’. This Fifties property – her nineteenth home – was enthusiastically created into the perfect London pied-à-terre with a quintessentially English feel. The rug in the main bedroom of this is from Talisman. Botanical prints hang on the wall, which is covered with a striped wallpaper by Colefax and Fowler.

The colours are peaceful and pleasant, as they are throughout the house. ‘Above all, I wanted the colours to be calm; this pale colour palette makes a narrow house seem less claustrophobic and fussy, and meant that I could add pattern through the other textiles.’

Interior designer Robert Moore is a self-confessed magpie, and his home is bursting with beautiful things: books, photographs and silvery trinkets adorn every surface. The main bedroom is painted in ‘Tablecloth’ by Paint & Paper Library while the mirror was bought in Arundel. Nicholas Haslam will make the pretty gabled headboard to order, but Sofa.com’s ‘Inferno’ bed upholstered in cotton (starting from £695 for a double) is a good alternative.

If space for a tree is tight, miniature box trees look super smart wrapped up in fabric such as velvet and placed on your bedside table. Don’t forget to put a small dish underneath the pot to catch any water.

Another great colour combination, the fresh apple green walls are set off perfectly by the rich raspberry curtain. Both colours are referenced in the pretty rug and bed linen, but furniture is kept uniformed so as not to over complicate the scheme.

Gothic florals in the bedroom? A touch of taxidermy? We say anything goes.

‘I got it off Ebay for £200’ says designer Diana Sieff of the four-poster bed in the bedroom of her Oxfordshire home. ‘I like using big furniture in small spaces, because it gives the illusion that the room is bigger. Although I did have to take the finials off the bed posts, as they hit the ceiling.’ One of Diana’s trademarks is to forego curtains in favour of shutters. ‘I had them made,’ she explains, ‘which I prefer because they are minimal and less light-excluding.’ The walls are covered in – ‘Adams Eden’ by Lewis & Wood.

A modern bedside table and monochromatic rug designed by Studio Ashby feature in the guest bedroom in a flat that has been transformed from a stark new-build to a characterful home. The pattern on the padded headboard is reflected in the artwork above the bed.

One of five upstairs bedrooms, this room marries comfort with style. The cowhide rug and black and white patterened chest of drawers keep the colour sceme minimal, but a spash a green on the dresser continues the home’s connection to country-side.

The owners have gently modernised this house, which in parts dates back 600 years, by simplifying the layout, adding personality through decoration and giving it an established feel.

When asked whether she and Bunny felt intimidated, Emma’s response is: ‘Dom understands the value of interior design – and what other man would be happy with a pink bedroom?’ ‘Everyone was quite surprised that I jumped on the pink,’ says Dominic.

After visiting her friend Kathryn Ireland in France’s Tarn region, Anne Halsey bought a French farmhouse retreat there and enlisted the help of the decorator to create a relaxed space perfect for entertaining. Hints of pink add a soft touch a bedroom, in which ‘Toile’ by Kathryn M Ireland was used for the curtains, headboard and footboard; to one side is a free-standing bath.

Using a chic modernist pallet of bold colours creates a light and inviting bedroom scene. The walls are covered in ‘Weathered Walls’ by Maya Romanoff at Pierre Frey with a bold patterned curtain from ‘Jardin d’Osier’ silk at Hermès. The mirror from The Conran Shop creates an added depth to the room, and makeshift bedside storage.

Revamping a teenage son’s bedroom? How about this clean-cut but cosy scheme? A stylish ottoman at the end of the bed provides an easy, clear-away-clutter storage solution and a desk doubles up as grooming table in case the young man is fond of a little preening.

The sludgy tones work for Gytha, who with her property-developer husband Jean Michel Bouchon discovered the apartment while renting the flat next door. Where possible, Gytha has avoided using paint. ‘I don’t really like it’ she says. ‘It gives no depth.’ Instead a linen-effect wallpaper by Flamant has been used in the main bedroom, acting as a moody backdrop to a gallery wall of pictures and the red upholstered headboard. ‘It never scuffs, and at night – with low light – it’s just magical. I’m an anti-spotlight person.’

This twin bedroom is a guest room in a Carribean bamboo house. The bamboo, a traditional building material in the Grenadines, came from nearby Saint Vincent, where it is always harvested when the moon is on the wane. The belief is that termites quickly devour any bamboo cut when the sap is rising, even once the wood is cured.

Designer Paolo Moschino commissioned painter Dawn Reader to create the stripes on the walls here. She custom-mixed the blue to match Paolo Moschino for Nicholas Haslam’s ‘Melba Stripe’ fabric in the blue on ecru colourway, but Edward Bulmer’s ‘Fair Blue’ natural paint is similar; £41.50 for a 2.5-litre pot of emulsion.

This bedroom in the South of France decorated by Samantha Todhunter includes all the best elements of a bedroom and sitting room combined. The armchairs are covered in ‘La Fiorentina’, from the David Hicks by Ashley Hicks collection for Groundworks at Lee Jofa. The pretty pale blue curtains are in ‘Ipeka Nuage’ linen from Lelievre.

For interior designer Charlotte Crosland and the owner of this reconfigured central London flat, a shared vision has resulted in generously comfortable rooms accented with splashes of colour. In this spare room, the vibrant decoration includes a yellow Volga blanket and a painted antique chest of drawers from Myriad.

This bedroom may be sparsely furnished but the chosen pieces – a luxe purple velvet headboard, an uber elegant side table and the beautifully printed ottoman, bed spread and cushions – have serious design impact. Then of course there is the stunning statement peacock feather wallpaper. Wow.

Decorating with multiple colours can be an intimidating task for even the most seasoned of designers. No matter how genuine our initial enthusiasm for venturing across to the other side of the paint chart, it is all too easy to get cold feet and talk ourselves out of being more courageous with colour, settling instead for safe, neutral schemes. Colour, however, shouldn’t be used exclusively to make a statement. Gabby Deeming set herself the challenge of creating four palettes from the Mylands paint range. Each palette is made up of four shades that would sit together harmoniously in a space, and work beautifully with textiles and wallpapers. The walls are painted in ‘Piccadilly’ and ‘Palmerston Pink’, £34.66 for 2.5 litres matt emulsion, while the floor is in ‘Honest John’, £21.65 for 1 litre water-based eggshell, all from Mylands.

Sometimes there’s much to be gleaned from the design of a good hotel room. This one the Playa Grande Beach Club is painted in what it’s owner calls, ‘faded bathing-suit colours’, and layered with art, objects and vintage furnishings. The bed forms the focal point of a perfectly symmetrical tableau of furniture, starting with the wall mounted lamps and side tables and culminating with the bamboo sofa, coffee table and string chairs which form an appealing seating area for morning coffee and newspapers.

This small bedroom has dark green walls in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Olive’ paint. The single divan bed base is furnished with a ‘Casati’ headboard from Ensemblier London upholstered in ‘Faded Monochrome Teal Roses’ from Bennison. A limed wood antique commode is used as a bedside table, topped with a pile of books and simple glass vase filled with fresh flowers.

Remember that storage doesn’t necessarily have to be in the bedroom. If you have a corridor near the room consider utilising that as a place to put wardrobes, as designer Philippa Thorpe has in this Chelsea house.

This red-and-white child’s bedroom is a small space. Every inch is used effectively, with storage built into the bed (find similar from Ikea) and a chest of drawers fitted into an alcove.

This stunning real home executes pink perfectly by adding a dash of the unexpected – a modern fuchsia lamp – which doesn’t distract from the overall theme.

Need a new nightstand? Take a cue from this bedroom (from Littlewoods) and use a step ladder. Bonus points for painting it a cool colour.

Fiona Shelburne has a lot of experience decorating country homes, so she knew what she had to do when it came to this Hampshire home. The beautifully crafted four-poster bed, made by Richard Phillips, has red Le Cuona linen curtains; to lift the mood of the room, the inner fabric is the Claremont print ‘Plumettes’. Two bedside tables by Paolo Moschino for Nicholas Haslam are surmounted by French grisaille-painted mirrors. ‘The velvety carpet from Tim Page is lovely underfoot, says Fiona Shelburne, ‘but it has to be vacuumed all in one direction, rather like a cricket pitch. It looks its best covered with masses of tiny footprints at the end of the family weekend.’

In this flat designed by Tom Bartlett of Waldo Works, the back wall of the main bedroom is papered in a striking green de Gournay wallpaper. The dramatic design makes a wonderful feature wall. This stylish nineteenth-century house on London’s Portobello Road is the work of Eleanora Cunietti, one half of Carden Cunietti design practice. The main bedroom has a rich colour scheme and a palette of teal predominates. The owner loves it. ‘There is something incredibly calming about the colour,’ she says. ‘It reminds me of water, always changing, always different.’ The bedcover is ‘Meadow’ silk by Mulberry.

Grey curtains complement ebony drawer units in this smart bedroom designed by Anthony Collett. The room is rich with character, including sound-absorbing, fabric-lined walls, which add texture, and an upholstered, padded wall, inspired by a Ben Nicholson painting, acts as a dramatic headboard. John Spencer Joinery made most of the furniture in the bedroom, notably the ebony and sycamore drawer units. It’s a daring space: sophisticated yet welcoming.

We’re having a bit of a love affair with yellow at the moment, but this has to be one of our favourite applications of the sunny hue: bright yellow shutters combined with a black and white scheme and a few yellow accessories to accent. Amazing.

A classical scheme of duck egg and taupe will always be in style. Period-style wall panelling and the decorative wall sconces and mirror up the elegance factor too.

This bed in the bedroom of gilder Clare Mosley and husband Mark Bicknell was bought in Paris. Its journey hasn’t been smooth. During the eight months it took to make the house reasonably habitable, Clare and Mark camped in one room and the builders worked around them. However, even this safeguard did not protect them from a few of the traditional building disasters. Having gone away for two days, they returned to find that the bed had been cut up and thrown out of the window and into a waiting skip below. Thankfully, it was saved. It is now resplendent with matching quilt, half-tester and cushions in ‘Mikado L2804’ by Le Manach.

This bedroom in Soho House NY has a modern rustic feel thanks to a combination of dark green walls and wooden floorboards and beams. A small rolltop bath acts as a luxurious design feature.

This traditional bedroom features a fireplace and a round mirror hung above it. A subtle backdrop is provided by striped wallpaper. The overall look is elegant and warm.

The spare room in this antique-filled Wiltshire farmhouse keeps things simple with white linens and a pink theme which is picked up in the curtains, the rug and the blanket.

Combining classical proportions and traditional furnishings with the informal elements of family life, this house in Cornwall has proved to be the perfect acquisition for its owners. In the past 100 years, the house has been a hotel and a Christian refuge, and even divided into flats. Despite these changes of use and fortune, it has survived intact, complete with its marble chimneypieces, panelled doors and acanthus cornices.

A large, internal glazed window provides views from the main bedroom into the sitting room and vice versa, while a concealed Venetian blind provides privacy. The bed sits on a 60cm podium, elevating the floor level and allowing access to all the cupboards. It raises the bed to provide views through the internal window across the sitting room to the leafy square that is at the front of the house and the window that overlooks the rear of the building.

This pale green country bedroom features floral chintz details, a cream ‘fireplace’ and green French doors.

Designer Guy Goodfellow has made the window a feature in this manor-house bedroom in Devon. Its casement is painted in Rose of Jericho’s ‘Mountain Green’, framed by thick linen curtains and with a smart seat underneath. The ceiling is painted with floral motifs, giving the appearance of pargeting. To replicate these murals, try the painter Dawn Reader.

Tucked away in a small backstreet in Knightsbridge is the home of Tessa Kennedy, a legendary name in the world of interior design, whose work adorns Claridges and the Ritz, and whose clients include George Harrison, Elizabeth Taylor and Prince Jefri of Brunei – for whose apartment she designed a revolving drawing room. Her house is eclectic, opulent and leavened with a healthy dose of kitsch, including this spectacularly theatrical spare bedroom. The walls are painted in pale violet to match the toile on the four-poster bed, bought on the Marche aux Puces in Paris.

The main bedroom of Charles Rutherfoord and Rupert Tyler’s London home is on the first floor. The minamilist space features little else but a bed, a deer hide rug, a taxidermy jaguar and an armchair by Pierre Paulin. Single-pane windows make the most of the garden views.

The artist owners of this London house called on interior designer Beata Heuman to create a family home full of fun, distinctive design. A highly original space, unapologetically theatrical and oozing energy. ‘The owners are both artists. They have quite wild tastes and they love strong colours,’ says Beata. The main bedroom has a bespoke sofa upholstered in Beata’s signature marbleised fabric and lion claw feet. Other notable features include a pair of breglass dance-hall mirrors from French Loft and the ceiling painted in ‘Lulworth Blue’ by Farrow & Ball. ‘I have this thing about painting ceilings blue. It seems over the top, but it adds a feeling of height and once it is in, you don’t really think about it’.

Near the site of a Sussex country house demolished in 1911, Richard Taylor and Rick Englert have built a Jacobean-style manor at Whithurst Park. It took a year to get planning permission and two more to build. The result is certainly striking and bears some of the signatures of the prodigy houses built in the era that its design evokes, such as Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire and Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. But as Kit explains, ‘It was the site itself and essence of Sussexness that made me design it as I did.’

A pretty dressing table, floral wallpaper, a moodboard and a glass fronted cabinet transform this tiny hideaway nook into a perfect pamper parlour. Gorgeous.

Modern doesn’t have to mean sterile, mix it up with contemporary shapes in soft hues and textures.

This cabin bedroom features a pine bunk bed at Soho Farmhouse with plenty of cushions makes a cosy and relaxed space. Bedding is neutral to prevent the space from becoming gaudy.

Passing down through inheritance for nearly 400 years, Holker Hall has a rich history resulting in an interior that combines comfort with charm. In one of the guest rooms, a classic Colefax and Fowler fabric is used on the day bed, footboard and canopy.

Formerly a rabbit warren of small, dark rooms, this Victorian house in west London has been opened up, flooded with light and filled with the owners collection of art and furniture, to create a balance between its original character and modern style. The main bedroom and bathroom design proved problematic, due to the Victorian dimensions of the five-metre-wide space. The soft lighting and gentle palette brings to mind the inviting warmth of an art gallery. A charming arrangement of mostly Modern British oils and drawings, which owner Ben Whitfield collects, rests on a built-out picture shelf that doubles as a headboard.

Just because the room is small doesn’t mean the bed has to be. We love the elegant four-poster from Guinevere, in this house in Cap Ferret designed by Guy Allemand and Jonathan Tuckey. Furnished sparingly, apart from the fantastically clever storage flanking the door; the lack of furniture makes the view of the sea beyond the balcony doors the main event.

The furniture was found at Swoon Editions, including the low, mid-century modern rosewood media unit and bedside table. The bedding was bought from Anthropologie and the lighting from Urban Cottage Industries.

Putty coloured walls bring warmth to chic white furniture in this bedroom in Stockholm’s Ett Hem hotel designed by Ilse Crawford.

Take inspiration from Kit Kemp’s work at Ham Yard hotel in London and decorate a bedroom with deep grey walls punctuated with flashes of fuchsia and red. A pretty white bedspread – still full of Kit’s trademark texture – allows the eye to rest, drawing the eye to the beautiful gabled headboard.

Classic-boat enthusiast Katie Fontana’s love of pure craftsmanship and aesthetic simplicity resulted in the bespoke kitchen design company Plain English as well a charming houseboat and boathouse where she lives when she is in London. The ex-Customs and Excise cutter called Stork is moored in St Katharine Docks, E1. ‘In 2008, shortly after our father died, my sister and I were in Maldon, Essex, where he lived, Katie explains. We spotted Stork for sale and thought she looked cute. When I noticed she was built in 1926, the year my father was born, it felt like a sign, so I bought her as a little place to stay when I was in London. The interior had been Ikea-ed, and wasn’t really to my taste, but I knew if I covered it all in Farrow & Ball paint it would be fine. One day, I’d like to give her a full authentic refit. For now, she’s a bit of fun.’

Soft white walls set the tone in this modern bedroom, which also features a run of bespoke cupboards. These divide the bedroom from the hallway. A simple, rustic tree stump is used as a bedside table, adding to the natural feel of the scheme. Create a similar effect with ‘Lozano’ by Swoon Editions.

Blue and white striped walls make this room feel bigger, a clever effect that is strengthened by the matching headboard. The subtle nautical style with industrial touches seems particularly fitting for a bedroom in this Victorian water tower conversion.

The bamboo desk in the main bedroom of textiles designer Susan Deliss’ French country house came from Golborne Road, London. The curtains are made from heavy French linen, dyed a bright pink – here Deliss proves that pink needn’t be precious, it can be bold and punchy when used correctly.

The master bedroom in this petite, 90sq metre family home in London’s Chelsea is the work of designer Eve Mercier. The two Rothko-esque panels that flank the bed are not paint but vibrant silk, while the Fifties-style Danish bedside tables come from Chelsea Textiles (£498 each), a good source for chic and simple designs. On top of them are Forties Quindry lamps.

Don’t be fearful of brights in the bedroom, they can look fantastic, but we suggest keeping strong hues to a feature wall behind the bed and choosing a softer, more calming colour for the rest of the room.

Not a design scheme for the faint hearted but one that we rather love. The furniture may have a Louis XV feel but the introduction of hot pink and lime green accessories and the all-over lattice effect wallpaper keep it ultra contemporary.

This is a house to fall in love with, located in a Cotswold village so unfeasibly pretty you want to bottle it to savour. In the bedroom you can almost do just that – it opens to the garden. The owners decorated it themselves but Nina Campbell is an old friend and ‘still have many things she found’. Here, they matched the bedcover from The White Company to the beams, given a greyish, limed-effect finish to retain a sense of airiness.

The interior designer behind this West London home was Ebba Thott. In the spare room a steel four poster bed, a modern take on a timeless classic, sits comfortably alongside a custom-coloured blue and white chintz by Marthe Armitage. The bedcover is by Holland & Sherry through Lelièvre in Paris.

Architect Francesca Oggioni had to set aside her rationalist principles when she was planning a new layout for her listed house in west London, so it would work as a family home, workspace and backdrop for an extensive art collection. This spare bedroom on the top floor has neutral decoration allows the artwork to be the focus of the room.

Wendy Nicholls of Colefax and Fowler has honed her personal and professional style in her London flat which is full of Victorian accents and unique accessories. Her shock revelation is that they were made from silk taken from the curtains in the yellow drawing room at Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler’s Brook Street building. That room, with its lacquered buttercup walls and three pairs of massive curtains hung about with passementerie, was a shrine to decorating, an emblem of their grandest classical style. Was it heresy to cut up its curtains? Wendy quickly assures that these were the last remnants of earlier pairs, which had fallen into shreds.

‘We loved the cool, pared-down style of a house belonging to a Swedish art collector, which we had seen in a magazine,’ say the owners of this west-London terrace home. Enter Hugh Leslie whose unmistakable style gradually evolved the house into a smart family home. At the front of the house on the first floor is the pretty, generously proportioned main bedroom. Its walls are lined with the same buff-pink linen (‘Prelle Toile Barbare’ fabric by Alton Brooke) as the pelmets and the curtains, which adds an extra touch of glamour to the room. Behind it is the en-suite bathroom, with simple panelling, hand-built units and a walk-in shower lined in teak, which feels a bit like entering a first-class compartment on a vintage train.

The master bedroom of a converted disused chapel in Somerset owned by artist Jonathan Delafield Cook and illustrator Laura Stoddart is decorated in a neutral colour palette of creams and whites with blue accents provided by the bedding and cushions.

Since moving into her husband’s 300 year old Wiltshire farmhouse, designer Sarah Vanrenen has enhanced its quirky charm, with an adjusted layout and unexpected colours. Upstairs, the seven bedrooms are equally individual – one has a cheerful mixture of lilac and jade, another lime and sherbet pink. A spare room is decorated with green tones, with sari fabric is on the ottoman at the end of the bed.

A mezzanine bedroom is the ideal solution for a small space, especially if you fit in a built-in wardrobe behind the bed. But designer Maurizio Pellizzoni had to jump through several hoops to get planning permission for the staircase, which links the mezzanine bedroom to the sitting room. First the staircase had to be craned in, then the council had to close the street while giant glass panels for the bedroom were hoisted up into place. Maurizio refers to this project, done for his friend Andrew Daniell in London’s Shoreditch, as the James Bond flat, because of its technology and slick looks. It’s a bachelor pad, but the striped blanket adds a soft splash of colour in an otherwise monochromatic scheme (find a similar one from Welsh weavers Melin Tregwynt, £95 at John Lewis).

Anne-Marie Midy inherited this house in the south of France and has since lovingly restored it to refresh the interiors without losing the charm of the space.

The designer Jane Gowers discovered her stylish London terrace house by chance, but its restoration and decoration have been the result of good judgement and a sympathetic approach.

Known for their restoration of historic buildings in Scotland, conservation architects Nick Groves-Raines and Kristin Hannesdottir relished the challenge of saving Lamb’s House in Leith, where they now live and work.

Modern bedroom schemes are the perfect place to play with sizzling colour. Frame bright daylight through a window with a gathered pelmet in the same colour as the walls.

‘He took time to consider each space and how the light falls at different times of day, making every angle, aperture and window a picture in itself. He created contemporary interiors that managed to contrast with and yet enhance the ancient setting.’ Here a Le Corbusier chair sits in harmonious contrasts to its medieval surroundings.

White linens and walls make for a clean, modern space in this sleek coastal house in Fife, warmed up by the wood flooring. A swing-arm task lamp serves as bedside lighting.

The concrete floors and exposed brick painted in white may create a cool warehouse feel but the nonchalantly styled books and pictures, as well as the texured bedding and soft throws keep the scheme from being sterile.

Give a country cottage bedroom a wash of white paint and their odd angles characterful corners come in to their own. A Jacob’s ladder accentuates the double-height proportions of a spare room at Slackwood Farm in Lancashire.

Taking a nod from the catwalk trend of dark, dramatic florals, the usually sweet butterfly motif gets a moody makeover thanks to inky walls and deep greens and blues.

For those who live in small spaces or are short on storage, this chic little wall-hanging from Ikea will keep all your bedside paraphernalia perfectly in place. Or, if you’re feeling particularly crafty you could make your own.

Colour-blocking a wall doesn’t have to mean using bright colours. Here, a mix of grey, white and artfully distressed adds warmth to an otherwise thoroughly modern bedroom.

The bedroom in this hotel designer’s west London home features a portrait of the owner, aged 13 by the artist Primo Potenza, which hangs above a mahogany table. Beside it stands a 1930s découpage screen by the surrealist painter and theatrical designer Leonor Fini.

Now, isn’t this cosy? The key to a cream scheme: texture, texture, texture. Make a bed in a mix of crisp cotton, soft knits and faux fur. Add some wood elements and top with the perfect pendant light.

Can’t find a headboard you like? Customise. Paint one directly onto the wall, create an upcycled version out of old doors, or simply cover an existing headboard in a new fabric like shown here, adding plenty of pattern throughout the room for a cosy, layered look.

A low, back-to-basics bed (albeit with some clever storage), a stripped back colour scheme and a few choice accessories make this bedroom one for fans of minimal utilitarian style.

A rustic scheme with style. Wooden crates and rattan pots provide storage while crisp white and pale grey bed linen ensure it’s more chic log cabin than horrible hovel.

In this small bedroom, a zebra-skin storage box adds interest at the foot of the bed. Light grey walls create an elegant scheme while encouraging natural light to bounce around the small space.

An attic conversion makes for a perfect guest room. The scheme is simple but elegant with minimal but impactful pieces of furniture and furnishings. A sofa allows guests a little chill out time away from the rest of the house. Be careful though, they may not want to leave.

In the main bedroom of this vicarage in Hampshire, interior designer Max Rollitt has customised an antique four-poster bed found at auction, with a pretty scalloped frame. The wallpaper is ‘Adams Eden’ by Lewis & Wood.

Despite several attempts at finding the perfect paint colour, designer Fiona Parke and owner Bodil Blain settled on ‘New Silver’ from Sanderson. A soft gold headboard, chevron throw and pink patterned cushions add personality to the soft, oh so chic scheme.

When designer Douglas Mackie and his partner Julian Jackson bought this house in the Languedoc region of the South of France, it was a chance for Douglas – a knowledgeable collector of textiles – to show off his stock of older, ethnic pieces. ‘I have always been an avid collector of pieces from North Africa and Asia, and now their rich saturated colours sit wonderfully well in the shafts of sunlight of a southern home.’ In the spare bedroom a Persian jajim hangs against the brush-plastered wall in place of a headboard. On the floor is a vintage Moroccan rug, while the bed linen is from Conran.

Sara Charlesworth’s bedroom may not be huge, but great textiles, a chic bedside table and some fun accessories are all it needs. The fantastic polka dot bedding, FYI, is from lustworthy US store West Elm, which – rumour has it – is due to launch in the UK soon!

At first glance, this Berkshire home’s décor seems utterly unachievable, but all you really need is some paint and a little bravery to take your bedroom from boring to beautifully unusual.

The guest bedroom has a four poster bed, festooned with pattern and colour.

Sofa beds don’t have to be drab. Spruce up your spare room with some neon-piped bedding, and add a geometric rug and lime green accessories for a scheme that will be uber smart whether you have guests or not.

To furnish the rooms of Song Saa, the private island hotel in Cambodia that she part owns with her husband, Melita Hunter travelled widely through South-East Asia gathering ideas and commissioning craftsmen. This four-poster bed was commissioned in Cambodia, and copied from a design Melita had seen in Chaing Mai. It is hung with White Muslin from Thailand.

If you’re a ‘less is more’ person then this is the bedroom scheme for you. The key is in keeping colours muted but the furniture interesting – the four-poster bed has presence and works well with the high ceilings in this room; anything less and the room may feel bare.

Dark blue and pale gold are a gorgeous colour combination, particularly when applied in an unexpected way: through an untreated wall, and painted wooden floor for instance.

Along with sunshine and sexy Sicilian food, the style of the luxury Le Corti di Cannamara farmhouse in Sicily is to die for. Amber, lavender and the palest of pistachios? Molto, molto magnificent.

If you don’t have room for a four-poster bed then a pelmet like this one by Paolo Moschino can be a creative alternative. The linen curtains are made from ‘Nyvelle Oyster’ by Paolo Moschino for Nicholas Haslam. The clean, straight lines and border of blue stands out against the dark walls.

This gorgeous scheme triumphs in its simplicity. Soft whites and creams, with feminine details like the tissue pom poms and a bone inlay bedside table, create a dreamlike environment. The large mirror leant, rather than hung adds to the relaxed chic effect.

Mixing rich colours and pattern can be difficult to get right. Dark patterned blue wallpaper ‘The Brook’ from Morris & Co, which pattern continues around the room adds character and a playful feel. The bright ‘Red and Cream Stripe’ wool kilim rug from Sinclair Till lightly compliments the pattern and helps to balance and tie the room together.

In this bedroom, a blue curtain from Marimekko is paired with an unusual wicker headboard created by Paolo Moschino for Nicholas Haslam. The overall scheme is both natural and colourful.

Since moving into her husband’s Wiltshire farmhouse, designer Sarah Vanrenen has enhanced its quirky charm, with an adjusted layout and unexpected colours. The embroidered linen bedspread was bought at a flea market in France, the rug came from Morocco and an Uzbek tribal coat hangs on the wall.

In this modern city flat that has been transformed from a stark new-build to a characterful home, the use of a natural palette full of texture and earthy tones continues in this bedroom, creating a calm and peaceful space.

One of the smartest bedroom ideas we’ve come across in a while. A blue and white geometry runs through this bedroom in a Manhattan townhouse designed by Hugh Leslie.The same royal blue velvet used on the headboard has been wrapped around batons to create the border on the walls. The antique Japanese screen is from Gregg Baker.

Love a romantic white or cream bedroom scheme? Go for a riot of pale patterns and prints, and choose furniture with plenty of deluxe detailing. The finishing touch? A statement chandelier, of course.

Navy blue walls are a chic style statement in the bedroom and really help strong prints and bright colours stand out.

This modern bedroom styled by Gabby Deeming was inspired by traditional Japanese rooms with Shoji screens and includes a simple yet elegant futon bed on a platform base from Futon Company. A black satin headboard, black and gold textiles, fairy lights and a feather lamp result in a glamorous scheme that’s the flirtatious side of gothic.

This bedroom, belonging to designer Harriet Anstruther’s 22-year-old daughter, continues the stripped back theme of the restored farmhouse while adding sophisticated elements such as the chandelier and canopy bed.

Light green walls and a headboard in Colefax & Fowler’s ‘Evesham’ give this bedroom designed by Caroline Harrowby a fresh, floral look. Its eclectic style is made elegant with pretty curtains and a painted dressing table from the owners’ previous home.

Sometimes all it takes is a few key accessories to give your bedroom a style overhaul: a striking chandelier, a feature mirror and, our personal favourite, a neon sign above the bed – the contemporary style of which contrasts beautifully with the more traditional touches.

‘For the decoration, I kept the materials simple. Most important was the reclaimed timber floor, which sets the tone for the whole flat,’ designer Harriet Anstruther says. Her colour palette is similarly pared back, but with a few well-placed hits of bold colour – including this electric blue armchair in the bedroom.

Casamidy’s ‘Hacienda’ silver-leaf headboard provides a focal point in this blue bedroom, creating a glamorous space. This is paired with red bedding and a matching ribbon of colour running around the top of the wall.

This country-style bedroom features a pretty bed canopy in green and white, setting the colour scheme for the space. A pair of Sixties China table lamps and a collection of framed William Blake prints on the walls add character.

Curtains screen the bed and add a cosy feel to this spare room in the home of Anne-Marie Midy and Jorge Almada (who own design company Casamidy). Anne-Marie’s grandmother made this quilt, but if you don’t have such a talented grandmother, you can commission Cassandra Ellis to design and make something personal for you. Quilts using Cassandra’s own vintage silks, wools and cottons cost £190 per square metre; quilts combining fabrics of your own – such as dresses, shirts or fabrics picked up on your travels – cost £165 per square metre.

This bedroom is a pretty confection of marbled grey wallpaper and gauzy muslin drapes – an elegant scheme for someone nearing the end of her teens.

Who said headboards had to be boring? A bold design (this one is from Sofas and Stuff) can liven up the most basic of bedrooms. Just add some colour-matched accessories and you’re away…

With a characteristic respect for the fabric of this eighteenth-century house in Bath, designer Patrick Williams has carefully transformed it into a welcoming home and B&B. For Patrick, whose company Berdoulat specialises in the reinvention of period buildings, ‘the building itself is the most important client and should dictate what is done to it’. Such is his respect that he did not begrudge the request from the local conservation officer to preserve the original peg joints between the floor joists and beams, even though new steel sections would provide the structural support – a detail that, once covered by floorboards, nobody would see. He delights in the ‘hidden beauty’ of the building – details like the pie-crust-edged chimneypots that ‘can be seen only by Father Christmas’.

An indigo velvet divan and headboard add character to this strikingly simple bedroom.

This bedroom in Ugbrooke Park was used by the Cardinal Weld (father of the wife of the 7th Lord Clifford) when he visited the house, thus his portrait and travelling trunk remain in the room. The walls of the Cardinal’s Room are covered in ‘Meredith’ in red by Nina Campbell for Osborne & Little, which is also used on the canopy and headboard.

The colour coral is back in vogue. According to Josephine Bennett, head of design at Laura Ashley, warm tones of sable with touches of coral give a subtle and slightly less feminine feel to this colour scheme. We like.

It was fitting that a nautical colour scheme of blue and white was chosen for this fisherman’s cottage in Cornwall. If you’re afraid of mixing pattern, start with stripes. (And check how to mix pattern.) A variety of sizes in the same colour adds interest, yet fits with the calm atmosphere of a bedroom.

In this glamorous bedroom at Soho House Berlin, furniture is scaled up for the vast rooms. (note the unusually tall headboard.) Designer Susie Atkinson chose bold colours: burgundy and Dorothy Draper-inspired turquoise.

Pattern and texture is key when decorating in white. From the headboard to the floorboards, mirrors and bedside table, each element distinctly stands out from the rest.

The bed in this spare bedroom in a Christopher Howe-decorated house in Bray was upholstered with vintage beetled linen from Howe at 36 Bourne Street.

The owners of this newbuild Bahamas beach house turned to trusted interior designer John McCall to provide their house with a British sensibility, practical furnishings and interiors that are not ‘too beachy’. A white palette characterises most rooms in the house. Pastel blue is added in the main bedroom with bedding and a storage chest. Pineapple detailing at the top of each post on the four-poster bed subtly offers a Caribbean feel.

The main bedroom of this Richmond mansion flat designed by Johnny Holland of Hackett Holland is decorated in dark colours to exaggerate its cosiness while the range of textures create a feeling of luxury. One corner has been hived off to form a walk-in wardrobe, which is papered with a tropical Ananbô wallpaper and overlaid with a grid of panelling to give it added depth.

The bedroom is one place in the home where you can really let your personality shine. Love a theme? Run wild with it. This beautiful bedroom, from Isme, incorporates Eastern elements into the furniture, bedding and wall art.

A framed nineteenth-century Indian embroidered panel hangs above the bed in this deeply comfortable bedroom in a London flat designed by Hugh Henry.

Take a leaf out of the Vidago Palace Hotel in Portugal’s book by mixing masculine (sleek, heavy furniture and dark colours) and feminine design elements (pastels, fresh flowers) for a beautifully balanced room that’s strong, yet oh-so chic.

This traditional guest bedroom at Wardington Manor in Oxfordshire features a classic four-poster bed and a small sofa with a box-pleated skirt. Character is added to the neutral floor and walls with soft furnishings such as a wall tapestry, rug and fabric bed canopy. The arrangements of cut flowers such as the one featured in this room are displayed throughout the house and sold as part of garden designers The Land Gardeners’ new business venture, which uses the manor as HQ.

Event designer David Stark and his artist husband Migguel Anggelo have reconfigured their Brooklyn apartment to create calm and flowing spaces brought alive by theatrical objects and unexpected finishes. A bedside table from Odegard sits below a vintage wall light sourced by MADE.

‘Scandinavians live for light. Inside Scandinavian houses it is summer all the time,’ says designer Lars Bolander in his book Scandinavian Design (Vendome Press). It is certainly true in his little 1800s farmhouse in Sweden. The home took a year to renovate, including breaking through the original chimney to create a fireplace in the main bedroom. The furniture is a mix of Swedish and English, while the walls are lined with ‘F124 Forget-me-not Spring in Pink’ from Chelsea Textiles.

A bed with a half-tester canopy made by J Gee Blinds takes centre stage in the main bedroom of a London flat designed by Charlotte Crosland, accessorised with a fleur-de-lis cover by Neisha Crosland and cushions that mirror the floral motifs on the decorative wall.

For Richard Hanlon, the plan to buy a holiday home in India with his friend Trish McFarlane led to the ambitious construction of Bujera Fort, now a spectacular palace hotel in Udaipur. Arriving today, up the rutted track that leads out of Bujera village, it is difficult to believe that this beautiful building, its outer walls frothing with white bougainvillea, was only recently finished. A bedroom is decorated with traditional Indian furniture combined with English fabrics such as the floral chintz on the headboard.

In the main bedroom of Robin Muir’s house, which was designed by Caroline Holdaway, the bedcover is ‘Fig’ from Raoul Textiles; the reverse is used for the cushions. Unpolished floorboards and white walls give this room a pared-back look.

The bedroom of decorator Emma Burns of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler is quintessentially English in both its gentle antique style and its ‘make do and mend’ execution. ‘The bedhead is covered in an ancient patchwork made from my mother’s old dresses. I originally used it as a tablecloth,’ she says. ‘For me the bedroom is as important as the sitting room; it is a place of refuge that I use for resting and reading. I like to fill it with books, pictures and armchairs. I’ve kept a feeling of softness by using a very subtle stippling effect on the walls, and some translucent blinds from Chelsea Textiles under the curtains, which allow a diffuse light into the room. My linen is from Volga Linen.’

When Tom Siebens and Mimi Parsons took the decision to downsize from a large five bedroom terrace to a distinctly more compact space in west London, they enlisted the help of decorator David Bentheim to create a modern, practical scheme. The two bedrooms are both small but ergonomic with floor-to-ceiling cupboards and a distinct colour scheme to add individual personality. Here Gayle Warwick linen in lime green provides punch.

We wouldn’t necessarily have considered a bold green for a bedroom but when used on a feature wall in an otherwise neutral room and combined with some pretty floral bedding, it’s fresh and spring-like. We love it.

Start with a neutral palette then add ‘dots’ of jewel-toned pieces throughout the room, using framed photos and wall art to tie it all together.

In the main bedroom of a large Chelsea flat designed by Sophie Ashby, silk ‘Madison’ wallpaper from Stereo provides a bold background to the set of nude studies from Lorfords Antiques. Complementing the earthy palette of this large space, smart rosewood cabinets flank the bed. ‘It drives me crazy that so often in newbuilds everything is built-in, so I wanted something free-standing and moveable,’ explains Sophie.

The main bedroom of this London flat is particularly sumptuous, with its flower-trail Braquenié wallpaper, figured cotton Fortuny bedspread and strawberry-silk cushions – a lesson in how to make a potentially gloomy space glow (the space was a former Victorian hospital building). The flat is the work of antiques dealer and interior designer Max Rollitt, who found the bird pictures hung above the bed in an antiques shop. Hannah Cecil Gurney’s west London flat is a feast of luxurious colour, texture and pattern – little surprise given that her father founded the handmade wallpaper company de Gournay. In the main bedroom hand-painted silk cushions and a Burmese lamp pick up on the green in the ‘Badminton’ wallpaper from de Gournay, which ‘provides a cocoon of birds and butterflies that makes [Hannah] so happy’. The paper has been antiqued in order to give a tarnsihed effect.

Naomi Paul was commissioned by Studio Ashby to make the beautiful hand-woven, offset wall and table lights. The wrap-around headboard takes on the appearence of luxurious wall panelling and makes the small space look bigger.

Jeanetta Rowan-Hamilton of Nettles Cashmere restored her tin-roofed fishing lodge after inheriting it from her parents. She abhors waste and loves change of usage, and is often seen in the salvage section of her local antiques shop. In one of the four bedrooms, Jeanetta has repainted this pair of Victorian beds that were her grandmother’s. The neutral tongue and groove walls and ceiling brings the feel of old and new together.

If you love florals but want to keep the look sophisticated choose a netural, more masculine shade. This bold grey print is dramatic rather than chintzy.

For the city that never sleeps, New York certainly has plenty of stylish hotels. The High Line Hotel is a recent addition, its décor evoking a bygone era. Hardwood floors and unique, locally-sourced furniture come standard, but the rooms are anything but. So chic.

Subtle and chic, this bedroom has plenty of Parisian-inspired romance without being too frou-frou. The secret? Dusky pastels, crisp white bedding teamed with gleaming chrome and a spray of white flowers. J’taime…

Pastels combined with painterly florals will always be oh so pretty, but we love the addition of the geometric print blind as an updated touch.

Gabby Deeming has created the atmosphere of a New England-style holiday home with painted wood and faded stripes. The walls are in ‘Faded Damask’ by Mulberry Home, while the bespoke wooden headboard can be made to order by Fafio, and is painted (along with all the rest of the wood work) in ‘Sea Cliff’ eggshell from Sanderson. The bedding is from Romo, and the driftwood side table is Oka.

This bedroom would be stunning solely with the striking dark grey wall panel and monochrome bedding, but the addition of the rich ochre throw, writing desk, vintage chair and chic accessories adds an extra element that takes this stylish scheme to a whole new level.

There’s a lot of neutral paint out there. Here’s a guide to which to choose

We’ve been very (no pun intended) impressed with the quality of furniture at shops like Very.com and Littlewoods of late – don’t dismiss them for good design. This bed (French Kiss) from the latter was reduced to just £184 in the sale. The bed curtains are Yolo Stripe (£14 a metre at John Lewis) while the rug (Lappljung Ruta) is £55 at Ikea.

Designer Harriet Anstruther’s Sussex farmhouse has been stripped back, cleaned and lime-washed throughout. White linen muslin curtains frame the main bedroom and soften the cool colour scheme.

In the spare room, the bedside table, lamp and wall lights are all from Nicholas Haslam – while fresh flowers are a recurring theme, her main bedroom also features bedside blooms.

Take a cue from the hotel to stay at in Rome – Hotel de Russie – and deck your bedroom in shades of citrus.

This spare room in the restored Cumbrian farmhouse of Annabel Lewis (owner of V V Rouleaux) has an antique canopied bed covered in toile de Jouy, with a nightstand painted in a matching hue. The unframed paintings and books piled by the bed add a relaxed look to the period features.

In this attic room, wood panelling has been painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘India Yellow’.

In this Paris flat, London-based designer Tara Craig has used a strong, simple palette with devastating effect. The walls of the spare bedroom are painted in ‘Papaver’ by Adam Bray for Papers and Paints, with an imposing ‘Carlyle’ headboard from Ensemblier London upholstered in ‘Serpetti’ linen by Martyn Lawrence Bullard.

Designer Adam Bray chose an earthy palette for the main bedroom of this London flat: the striped silk used for the headboard and curtains is ‘Charles X’ from Claremont and the jute carpet is ‘Compass’ from Tim Page. The striped silk curtains and headboard look matt in contrast to the glossy walls, as does thick jute carpet in a gutsy herringbone. A pop of vivid green from a lacquer bedside table and an elegant plaster lamp with vellum shade are all reflected in a Maison Jansen-style mirror.

Jane Sacchi recounts the experiences of updating a twelfth-century tower in Florence, with her husband, architect Bruno Sacchi. ‘It took three years to transform it into an exceptional family home, during which period Bruno often wandered about with a hammer and chisel picking plaster off the walls to expose the frescoes.’

Architect Francesca Oggioni wanted a new layout for her Grade II listed house in west London that would work as a family home, workspace and backdrop for her extensive art collection. She purchased her home with her Belgian husband, a hedge-fund manager, photographer and art collector. Their main bedroom has plenty of shelving and storage to maintain the sleek, clutter-free aesthetic of the house.

Andrzej Zarzycki designed a space-saving bed in the spare room of this provençal holiday house. The piece has a desk area on one side and a bed with built-in side tables on the other. The set of four artworks on the wall is by Gary Hume, and are part of a special edition created for Louis Vuitton.

This cosy bedroom at Soho Farmhouse features green floral wallpaper, creating a countryside feel. Matching curtains form a cosy canopy around the four-poster bed. This design is ideal for a small space.

Looking for modern bedroom ideas? Try smart schemes in black and white, warmed by the tones of wood, copper and leather. A giant knit throw (this one’s £149, from The Conran Shop) adds a touch of the eccentric.

Keep the overall palette calm and soft with different shades of warm grey on the walls, floor and furniture. A burst of yellow on the pillowcases and occasional bedroom chair keep the look vibrant without becoming too much. Embroidered and patterned cushions in black and white are a pretty finishing touch.

Ecclesiastical iconography, oriental fabrics and a collection of hanging lamps, mainly from Turkey, imbue the main bedroom of Tessa Kennedy’s London home with a colourful eclecticism. The curtains formerly belonged to the ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev and the Gothic bed was used as a prop in the 1966 horror film Eye of the Devil.

Designer Ebba Thott has kept a simple elegant feel in this London bedroom. With the problem of a large window at the end of the space, she has created a sense of entrance and drama through symmetry – placing the bed, which is flanked by two stylish mid-century wooden nightstands, directly in the middle of the room; and using a blind that is dramatic in its scale, but simple in its design. Pictures stacked on the floor rather than hung give a clean, relaxed feel.

We told you wire accessories were on trend, and this picture goes to show just what a chic addition they can be to a bedroom. Cool and contemporary, wire looks great with geometric print textiles.

The striking bed may be a traditional style in a country-inspired cabbages and rabbits print but when given some neon pink bed sheets and placed in front of a feature walll of colourful frameless picture frames, the look is modern and whimsical.

Bedroom ideas that incorporate a mixture of styles of furniture from different periods can look incredibly chic against a dark backdrop. Here a Fifties, brass wall sconce hangs above one of two vintage Scandinavian rosewood chests from Sigmar in this bedroom – the prize find of the project, according to the rooms designer Suzy Hoodless. ‘I slightly wish that I’d kept those for myself,’ she says wistfully. Charcoal coloured walls are combined with a lush velvet headboard in navy blue – one of our favourite bedrooms ideas.

Clashing patterns ruled the catwalk this season. Use the same trick when decorating your bedroom and stick to clashing prints in similar colour tones.

Folksy textiles look fantastic when added to an otherwise simple scheme. The eclectic display of ornaments on a shelf above the bed fits with the theme and looks great – just ensure you hang it high enough so you don’t hit your head every morning!

A 1920s French poster hangs above the bed in the main bedroom of Maryam Montague and Chris Redecke’s home in the countryside of Marrakesh. Maryam was responsible for much of the interior, weaving in layers of furniture, fabric, pattern and curios – including jewellery and tribal masks – gathered on countless travel trips.

If we were to have a house in the Hamptons this is how we imagine it would be decorated, but let’s face it, the combination of wall cladding, print bedding and a picture wall of pretty illustrations would look good anywhere.

Don’t be afraid of using orange in your home – it works surprisingly well and is enormously cheering. Dip your toe in the water by using a few orange accents.

Known for their sensitive restoration of historic buildings in Scotland, conservation architects Nick Groves-Raines and Kristin Hannesdottir relished the challenge of saving Lamb’s House in Leith, where they now live and work. Proof that one can still create a functional, stylish bedroom in a small area. A bunk bed with a built-in desk frees up space for a sofa, and built-in storage, hidden hanging rails and wall pegs ensure the room is kept clutter-free.

A feature bed in a purple velvet, bone-inlay furniture, an eclectic mix of textiles and an all-important insouciantly hung sheer voile make up this bohemian scheme that has us dreaming of exotic, balmy summer nights.

This boys’ bedroom features details such as ‘ribbons’ of colour along the top of the walls and upholstered headboards, which add cosiness to the white room.

The bedroom in this hotel designer’s west London home is decorated in neutral tones, with shots of lime green in the chair and cushions; a framed text by Ted Hughes hangs to the side of the bed.

This Oxfordshire cottage is a charming mix of old and new. Emma Burns of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler worked with the existing features of each room to breathe new life into them. The bedroom’s orange velvet curtains (out of shot) were an original fixture, though Emma had them remade and hung from an antique pole to match the quilt (which she sourced from Colefax and Fowler Antiques). The wallpaper is ‘Alice’ by George Spencer, while Oka is a good match for the embroidered cushion covers.

The main bedroom in designer Paul de Zwart’s Kensal Rise home cleverly combines decorative details with storage; a chest of drawers built into the alcove is made from the same material as the wall cladding. The two ‘Leggera’ chairs from Giò Ponti add colour.

Decoration editor Gabby Deeming has played with the colours and textures of natural materials to a serenely simple, Eastern-inspired scheme for this bedroom. Of the cork used on the walls she says ‘There is a warmth and versatility to cork; the wallcovering can also be used as an upholstery fabric.’

Nordic design lovers have never had it so good, with Scandinavian style now easy to find on our own shores. Our latest discovery? Danish design brand, OYOY. Anyone for a marathon box set session of The Killing in this bedroom?

White bedding provides a crisp contrast to the chintz in the Lake Room of Bowood house; the curtain pelmet is in a traditional swagged style. In 1987, Fiona undertook the task of redecorating much of the house. Having trained at Colefax and Fowler, she brought with her the influence of its quintessential English country-house style.

This bedroom in a Notting Hill townhouse is dominated by Michael Szell’s cheerful ‘Carnival’ fabric and wallpaper designed for Christopher Farr Cloth. The wall behind the bed has been entirely wallpapered, giving the effect of an extended headboard.

A large lattice design cotton dhurrie, ikat print cushions, headboard and curtains, rattan furniture and of course a voile draped canopy; if you’re thinking of a chic colonial theme, make OKA your first stop.

The owners of this Somerset country house had not anticipated taking on such a large project, but their careful renovation enhanced by modern decorative touches has resulted in a smart and comfortable forever home. This white attic bedroom has a sunny feel thanks to a bright yellow patterned throw and matching cushions. A storage chest with a cute duck design sits at the foot of the bed – perfect for adding character to a bedroom or for a kid’s room.

Create a focal point by placing a statement mirror in the middle of a fabric-draped four poster bed. So very chic.

Colourful notes in the main bedroom of artist and designer Bridie Hall’s home include a painting by Mary Fedden and an orange bedcover, made by Bridie. The moody grey paint is ‘Mercury’ by Fired Earth.

Proof that you can make the functional beautiful is this mosquito-net-draped bed at the Segera eco retreat in Kenya, started by businessman and entrepreneur Jochen Zeitz, a passionate advocate of conservation and sustainable tourism.

Where to start with the details in this bedroom? The pretty wall panel, sweet letter and picture display, and the decorative branches which reference the pretty fern print bedding.

Leopard print, paisley, florals… Anything goes in this bold scheme. Gold accessories offer some welcome kitsch, while a neutral backdrop and touches of white ensure it’s not too brash.

Who wouldn’t wake up full of the joys of spring in this light filled, summery bedroom? If you can’t afford to fill your room with garden flowers don’t worry, the fresh floral textiles and painted white gloss floor (which reflects the natural light) will do the trick alone.

Although this is a small bedroom, space has been found to include a workspace at the foot of the bed. Transparent furniture ensures that this addition doesn’t make the small space feel cramped.

We love cable lights. And we particularly love this affordable and quick way to hang them – with a simple shelf bracket from Ikea. The perfect bedside light.

Designer Kit Kemp is the queen of combining bold colour and pattern with a finesse that never looks overdone. In this room in the Ham Yard hotel deep blue walls are lifted by an upholstered gabled headboard and matching curtains. The polka dot print on the cushions is echoed in the chair, while the striped ottoman at the foot of the bed pulls in the white of the bedspread and balances the scheme.

A mix of contemporary and period furniture styles are pulled together by an aged apple green wall colour that is both modern and yet has vintage appeal. Combined with a statement rug and abstract wall art, the result is eclectic but extremely elegant.

Wondering how to work the colonial trend into your home? The right colours and textiles can make all the difference. Of course the addition of a few artefacts from foreign lands helps too…

Dark wood, rich gem coloured silks and lantern-style shades create a gorgeous Eastern aesthetic. We also love the three pendant lights, hung at different levels – a great feature.

This bedroom is a masterclass on eclectic style. The bedroom wallpaper (try here or House of Hackney for similar) clashes with the tartan and floral bedding, yet the blue-green colour scheme, accented with pops of hot pink ties it all together. The bed might be ornate, but the muted colour adds just the right amount of neutral tones, which allows the eye to rest.

Bold prints and a variety of textures adorn this room, which was created by our decoration team, Gabby Deeming and Ruth Sleightholme, as part of an African-themed scheme in a converted barn.

A small sofa with a bullion fringe sits at the end of the bed in the main bedroom at Ugbrooke Park – the four poster bed similarly has a fringed pelmet. The colour scheme of yellow with blue & white is consistently used throughout this bedroom’s design, creating a bright and cheery space.

This attic bedroom in west London designed by Hackett Holland is proof that you can make any awkward space stylish. It features London street map wallpaper and a sweet reading nook with a porthole window through which to gaze out (pictured out of shot, see it up close here).

Deputy decoration director Ruth Sleightholme combines a mid-century English colour palette with Grecian-inspired artwork and furniture to create calm and inviting schemes with quirky details that catch the eye.

In this west London house, designed by Sarah Stewart-Smtih, the understated main bedroom has curtains designed to pool as they meet the silk and viscose carpet custom-made by Blenheim Carpets.

The main bedroom of Ferry van Tongeren’s house has eighteenth-century engravings of shells by Jacq Julliet and Jac de Favanne. White bedding provides a bright centre to the dark room.

Interior designer Virginia Howard had no intention of moving from Knightsbridge to Pimlico, until a balcony flat in a nineteenth-century garden square changed her mind. The bedroom is decorated in a pale green colour scheme. The elegant, Grade II-listed stucco building overlooks the garden square in central London, bringing the outside in. Two meagre bedrooms were knocked into one generous one, filled with light from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Two headboards? Why not? We love the idea of reusing some reclaimed wood to make a headboard (see how to make one out of old doors here) and then placing another headboard in a different material in front of it (this one is from Zara Home). Very original.

Reflecting the Georgian building, this bedroom in Dean Street Townhouse has traditional furnishings, including pelmets and vintage armchairs to get comfy in the city.

If you’re considering florals but don’t want an overly feminine scheme, here’s your inspiration: a fresh print combined with contemporary accessories in strong yellow and green hues. The base of whites and greys keeps it sophisticated too.

The comfortable guest bedroom features a moss green headboard, with Victorian style cushions and bedspread. Their brief to Gavin Houghton was to make the house traditional and cosy, featuring the best of classic English interior decoration.

Muted tones of caramel, pistachio and chocolate are used in combination with elegant furniture and pretty detailing such as the mirror and the chandelier. We think we’d be very happy here.

Surface View, with its vast library of contemporary and traditional designs, is a House & Garden favourite. Images can be printed in any size and on to a huge variety of mediums – from murals to ceramic tiles. It is also possible to enlarge and print your own images, which come as either traditional wallpaper or as a self-adhesive, allowing for repositioning. Here, decoration editor Gabby Deeming has used ‘China’ from the V&A collection (250cm square, £300).

This quiet and comfortable reading spot lies in one of the spare bedrooms of this perfect country house, decorated by interior designer Veere Grenney. The owners recognise how lucky they were to find such a large home in such pristine condition and squandered no time in filling it with the possessions they love, like this floral, low back armchair and geometric rug in complementary shades of green.

A charming mix of antique textiles and a curtainless four-poster bed designed by Max Rollitt, make up the focal point of this London bedroom. Find a similar bedspread at the Antique Textiles Company or commission Cassandra Ellis to design and make one bespoke.

A bedroom isn’t the first place you’d think to decorate with tiles, but they’re perfect for adding a graphic edge to a modern scheme. Pair with soft fabrics for contrast.

Kelly Hoppen’s London house shows off her trademark slick, neutral style. The main bedroom, which has an internal window looking down onto the open-plan ground floor, features a neutral colour scheme of white and taupe. ‘You probably haven’t even noticed the other major thing I’ve done here,’ says Kelly. And it’s at this point that I come to appreciate not only Kelly’s dedication to detail, but also her refusal to take herself too seriously. ‘I’ve mixed sand with taupe,’ she says with mock triumph.

The couple could have turned to Dominic’s mother, design doyenne Jane Churchill, but opted instead for friends Bunny and Emma. ‘At that stage, Mum and Claire did not know each other that well and I did not want Claire to feel she had to go along with Mum’s suggestions,’ says Dominic. ‘It was our first family home and I wanted it to be just about us.’

Interior designer Marion Lichtig designed the headboards in the spare room to echo the nineteenth-century Dutch, harlequin-painted armoire. The pretty floral quilts were found in France, but the floral ranges from Ikea (such as Emmie Blom) are a good match.

A bedroom on the first floor of Tom Helme’s Carskiey Estate has a soft, pastel palette, with window and bed curtains in a matching ‘N-098’ wicker linen from Fermoie.

Owner Lavinia needs no introduction to regular readers of House & Garden, as she has been one of its legendary house finders since 1986. Between then and now, she has scoured the British Isles and beyond in pursuit of the best in interior decoration, and at last count has visited about 4,000 houses on behalf of the magazine. This is the first time that one of her own houses has featured here. ‘After all these years,’ she says with a laugh, ‘I thought, well, why not?’

The Argentinian architect Mario Cannio has created a play on stripes in his bedroom, with shades of olive green and red, and an indigo-dyed bed cover. The bedroom also has its own open fire and wooden blinds fitted outside the windows to shade them in summer. A colourful oil painting hangs above the modern fireplace and below this sit a neat line of artists pigments.

The gallery wall above the bed adds a symetrical dimension to the traditional bedroom, making it instantly appealing. (See 100 ideas for hanging art for more tips.) A simple colour palette prompted by pale-grey walls is lifted by the gold and silver details and the headboard, which was made by Lavinia herself using ‘Sukriti’ fabric from Penny Morrison.

Interior designer Harriet Anstruther’s grandmother’s shawl makes the bed in the spare room of her Sussex farmhouse especially cosy, while the wooden crates used as a side table add a rustic edge.

Blue patterned wallpaper creates a country feel at Soho House’sBabington House in Somerset. The roll-top baths in the bedrooms are a key design feature – they came about as the Georgian manor’s bathrooms were too small for them.

In the spare bedroom of Caroline Holdaway’s cottage, an olive-stripe flatweave rug from Sinclair Till contrasts with a vibrant tartan rug from Toast used as a bedspread and cushions made from fabric pieces left over from projects.

‘To make this room feel more relaxed, we decided to take the symmetry out of the space,’ says Tom Bartlett of Waldo Works, of his designs for London’s new Laslett Hotel. ‘It can be nice to break the rules. Things don’t always have to match: the lamp by Davide Groppi at TwentyTwentyone on the left above the fitted cabinet is different to the ‘Otis’ lamp Nocturne Workshop on the table by Pinch, but they are in the same materials and colours, so they work together. The same approach was used to hang the art, which I always try out first on the floor in front of the wall. One piece was hung and the rest were allowed to extend from it in different shapes up and across the wall. To do this well, you need a variety of frames and a good breadth of types of artwork,’ he says. Other items in the room include grey and blue patterned cushions by Eleanor Pritchard, an orange cushion by Urbanara and a blanket by Tweedmill.

Before moving in, the owners asked the interior designer, architectural historian and natural paint expert Edward Bulmer for his help. ‘Edward has a marvellous eye,’ says the owner. ‘We worked with him at our previous home. He has a great feel for colour and he is fantastic at arranging furniture and pictures.’

The globetrotting owners of this west London townhouse employed a specialised team to restore its original mid-nineteenth century features, and create a home with a feeling of permanence after a lifetime of moving. The house is a tall, white stucco building that they wanted to work well for twenty-first-century family life. ‘We were determined to avoid beige “banker chic”, the owners explain.

Everything from the antique furniture to the art work, luxurious bedding, drapes and regency blue wall paint make this room fit for a Queen and oh-so-elegant.

Luxe touches like a pretty metallic wallpaper and a velvet upholstered sleigh bed turn an ordinary bedroom into a rather glamorous boudoir.

In a spare room at a Belgian art collector’s London home by Feddy van Zevenbergen, the headboard is covered in a Jane Shelton fabric. The panelling was too damaged to restore, so Freddy lined the walls with a dark herringbone cashmere, which contrasts with the pale Italian marble of the bathroom behind.

Have scrap wood going spare? Upcycle it into a new piece of furniture as a bedroom idea. The bed in this spare room, made from wooden mooring posts from Venice, was Anne-Marie Midy’s grandmother’s. Along with husband Jorge Almada, Anne-Marie owns design company Casamidy which sells furniture and accessories. The couple live in Brussels with their two young sons.

A feature panel behind a bed always looks great, whether it’s a contrasting paint colour, a wallpaper or a picture wall. These shimmering mosaic tiles fit perfectly with the girly, vintage inspired scheme.

The bedroom of this house designed by Max Rollitt relies on a colour scheme of contrasting colours and introduces an extra layer of cosiness via the textured picture frame and bedside chest of drawers. The antique quilt was matched to ‘Jasper Peony’ wallpaper, an Adam Calkin design from Lewis & Wood, while the lampshade is made from book paper and hand-painted by artist Madeleine Bradbury, whose designs are inspired by the Bloomsbury Artists. Plush fabrics like chenille and silk are combined with ornate accessories and floral touches for a gorgeously feminine feel.

Sometimes, just one small detail which can bring a room together. In this case, the studs surrounding the bed’s cream headboard draws the eye, making the furniture the focal point of the room in the absence of any wall art. A perfect alternative for walls (or homes) where you can’t hang pictures.

The architectural style is late Georgian, with generous sash windows, deep eaves and a dash of Italianate villa, thanks to a balcony that sits above the drawing room bay, and a pair of triple-arched windows across the first floor of the south-west façade where terraced lawns drop away to woodland. This bedroom embodies the modest grandeur of English country-house style. The walls are in ‘Linen Stripe’ by Arthouse.

If you’re afraid of mixing pattern, start with stripes. A variety of sizes in the same colour adds interest, yet fits with the calm atmosphere of a bedroom. Designer Paolo Moschino chose a nautical colour scheme of blue and white for this fisherman’s cottage in Cornwall.

Thomas Clifford and his wife Clarissa have risen to the challenge of restoring Ugbrooke Park in Devon, which now has 12 main bedrooms and some charming turret rooms. This bedroom has a four poster bed with beautifully intricate details on its pelmet. The neutral colour of the walls is reflected by the bed dressings.

Sticking simply to creams, ecrus and off whites makes for a stylish, feminine bedroom. Accessories in antique gold, glass and pewter are the perfect finishing touch.

The walls in the main bedroom of Guy Tobin’s London house are painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Pavilion Gray’, while the headboard is covered in a fabric from Bennison Fabrics.

An element of grandeur is added to this grey bedroom with a silk canopy over the four-poster bed in Bruno Triplet silk. Monochrome patterned cushions add interest to the bedding.

The brief for this Paris bedroom was suitably intangible: she asked to be transported into another world. For decorator Jorge Estevez, who specialises in painting, it was vital his decorations were subtle so she wouldn’t tire of them, and also that there was ‘a feeling of the walls having been there before her’. The result is blissfully peaceful: in the bedroom, rough, eggshell-grey walls are painted with the most delicate of details to provide interest, and barely there friezes frame the doorway. The bedhead was made from an old door found in Brussels.

A painted headboard by Paola Cumiskey adds elegance to the main bedroom of this Norfolk village house belonging to Alan and Sarah Wilson. The house was designed by George Carter (who is known primarily for his award-winning gardens).

In the main bedroom of this Chelsea family home designed by Turner Pocock, a hand-painted de Gournay silk wallpaper and an elegant chandelier sets the tone, but a pompom trim on the curtains, (‘Arrango Linen’ from Zinc Textile) adds a touch of playfulness and frivolity.

A feminine scheme with French influences. Furniture is kept uniform but pretty textiles, an antique-effect light and a feature wallpaper panel ensure the room is anything but staid.

The power of three. If you keep the rest of your room plain, have three statement touches to make the room pop. Here, it’s the artwork above the bed, the pink pillowcases and the bright stools. Simple, no?

Even designers get their interiors inspiration from romcoms. Bunny Turner, one half of design duo Turner Pocock, was inspired by the headboard seen in the film The Holiday for her London home.

The pale walls, bedding and headboard in this small bedroom are perfect for such a tiny space. Loft conversions always benefit from large windows, such as the one here, to fill the rooms with natural light.

The small white bedroom on the second floor of this Victorian terrace house had been painted a rather gloomy blue. To make the most of the light, newlyweds Sophie and Dan opted to repaint the room with Dulux’s ‘Pure Brilliant White’ while lemon yellow accents bring further warmth to the room. The divan bed is furnished with a buttoned ‘Bekkestua’ headboard from Ikea and the cane mirror hung over the bed was bought on a trip to Saffron Walden.

‘The whole time we were working on this house our aim was for things not to match too much,’ says designer David Bentheim of this scheme. Juxtaposing the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, David copied original paneling that remained in an upstairs room, and installed a screen covered in de Gournay fabric behind the thoroughly modern, metal four-poster bed. Concealed within the bespoke white chest at the bed’s foot is a flat-screen television, which is raised and lowered using remote control.

We’ve seen a nightstand made out of books before, but this nightstand made from a vintage suitcase might just pip it to the post.

As bedroom ideas go, this must be one of the most simple. In the main bedroom of product designer Anthony Joseph – one half of kitchenware company Joseph & Joseph – mustard textiles were chosen to complement the walls painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Mole’s Breath’

With a characteristic respect for the fabric of this classic Georgian house in Bath, designer Patrick Williams has carefully transformed it into a welcoming home and B&B. Much of the work was about revealing what was there but they have also enriched the house. When the project started, Patrick spoke to several reclamation yards asking them to put aside any suitable elements for a Georgian house, and he also trawled Ebay. This bedroom features an original exposed stone fireplace, seen on the left.

We love the mix of colours and materials in this bedroom. The charcoal grey and dark teal hues combined with wood and bronze are lifted by a brighter graphic bedspread.

The vintage photos and beautiful wooden bed (with a built-in bookcase, natch) isn’t the only reason this is a dream bedroom. One of two bedrooms in the Royal Suite at The Goring hotel in London, it also features a private balcony which runs the entire length of the building, overlooking the hotel’s private garden and the London rooftops beyond. Scandinavian storage gods Ikea have impressed us mightily with their lighting selection of late. Snap up this pendant to add a hint of geometric design to a sedate space.

This green, cream and black bedroom features ruched blinds, which are shaking off their Eighties associations and making a comeback. Some rooms require a relaxed edge and these provide that softness. This one is in ‘Sophie’ from Borderline, £76 a metre – a simple linen print that looks charming and not at all like a Viennetta.

Having moved from a Georgian manor, Clare Agnew reworked the conversion of a 300-year-old barn in Norfolk to create a secluded home for her family, in which the inside works in harmony with the garden and the marshland beyond.

The room is not dull, however, thanks to a patterned headboard and exposed beams, which add interest to the space. As with many of the fabrics, cushions and rugs in her Somerset house, Sophie Hale went to Robert Kime for the floral fabric on the headboard. The ‘Susani Yellow’ linen is printed to resemble needlework and looks particularly pretty against the unpainted beams and neutral walls. It costs £210 a metre.

Will Fisher and his wife Charlotte of Jamb have completely refashioned their eighteenth-century house in south east London, relaying the wooden antique floors, reproducing the cornicing and installing period chimneypieces and stonework. The couple have done a great deal to bring that much sought-after – but rarely achieved – country-house look to the mainstream aesthetic.

Pattern plays a starring role in the main bedroom of this Chelsea house, the work of decorator Paolo Moschino. This unusual leaf-trellis design is part of his range for Paolo Moschino for Nicholas Haslam, and has been used for the curtains, bedhead, cushions and chairs and costs £99 a metre. The sisal wallcovering is ‘Sable NC07’ from Clarence House. The bench is 19th-century Italian, while the mahogany table is English, from the same period.

After visiting her friend Kathryn Ireland in France’s Tarn region, Anne Halsey bought a French farmhouse retreat there and enlisted the help of the decorator to create a relaxed space perfect for entertaining. This double guest room mixes different colours while sticking to the same gingham pattern (see the lamp shade, blanket and padded headboard), making for a colourful, chic and coordinated space.

The spare room in this Georgian town house in Ludlow designed by Caroline Harrowby is papered in ‘Alderney’ from Colefax and Fowler. This adds interest to the space, which is light and airy – a fitting style for a small bedroom.

Designer William Yeoward’s takeover of our June style pages, to celebrate the anniversary of his company, yielded a timeless scheme that celebrated his work past and present. In a room painted Farrow & Ball’s ‘Card Room Green’, an Eighteenth century screen from Hollyhock works in a similar manner to a mural. The bespoke tented cupboard was created by Clock House Furniture from William Yeoward at Designers Guild fabric. The chest of drawers and the bed are also of William’s design, with bedding from The Linen Works.
