Architecture And Interior Design Architecture And Interior Design

Don’t know about you, but we like to geek out about all sorts of stuff.

However, the deep issues facing the industry were highlighted when the architecture world was rocked by a string of sexual harassment accusations levelled at Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Meier.

If you are interested in studying interior design, make sure you think carefully about where your skills lie and research the course thoroughly before making a decision to ensure that your qualification will give you the best chance of success in what is a very competitive industry.

  • Focus on the home’s exterior design elements, and also its interior architecture, trim, millwork and ceiling finishes
  • Include electrical and plumbing requirements in each plan
  • Design the whole structure of a home (its exterior and interior structure)
  • In certain cases, select the tile, flooring and lighting (fixtures and placement)

In 2018, the architecture profession focused on wider issues impacting the world, which was embodied by the work of UK-based investigative agency Forensic Architecture. The research group created a 3D video of Grenfell Tower fire and showed the public its work at an exhibition at the ICA in London.

What it really boils down to is that your skilled general contractor should be the captain steering this ship. Be cautious when interviewing and choosing a contractor for any job, and be sure to ask him several questions about how he manages the design and building process.

Arches also appeared in a dim-sum eatery in Hong Kong, the Bar Lotus in Shanghai, and numerous residential projects including a Parisian pied-à-terre, pair of Tribeca lofts and coral-pink Barcelona apartment.

As a result, many interior design degree courses have been renamed as interior architecture degrees to more accurately reflect what they cover. Courses like this have also shot up in popularity, producing a growing number of architecturally savvy designers, and in turn making it more difficult to differentiate between architecture and interior design.

This year saw numerous A-list celebrities taking an interest in architecture. Kanye West led the way by taking a step towards translating his long-held architectural ambitions into reality, with the first output of Yeezy Home is expected to be a social housing venture.

Let me try to clarify the muddy gray waters of this issue. I can’t promise clarity, but I can hope to clear up some issues.

Take a look at these two flow charts that I’ve use when working with more than one design professional. These are examples for the sake of sharing information with you; every project is different. Before we commence a project, everyone agrees who will take the lead role when there is overlap. As you can also see, timing is very important.

This is one of the more common questions I get asked. Well, it is probably the most common question people want to ask, but never quite do, as they don’t necessarily know how to phrase the question. Or, they’re afraid of seeming like they are asking a stupid question. Have no worry, there are no stupid questions about this issue, as it is confusing.

So what is interior architecture, and perhaps just as importantly, how does it differ from architecture, interior design and interior decoration?

Interior architecture as a term has come into use due to the increasing scope and responsibilities of interior designers in recent times due largely to improvements in design technology (CAD) as well as improvements in interior design education. Many degree courses now teach students about the structural technical elements of buildings, which has begun to blur the line between architecture and interior design.

Here at Board & Vellum, we are what’s called an “integrated practice.” That means that the separate-but-linked fields of architecture and interior design are both practiced here. The design process is often the same for both paths. We have architects who only do architecture. We have interior designers that primarily select finishes and furniture. We also have people who do both and walk that line. It also means that if we are working with either an interior designer or an architect outside of our firm, we like to work together with all of the design consultants from as early as possible. This ensures a project that looks and feels cohesive. Sounds great, right? But again, what the heck is the difference?

The practice of interior architecture requires designers to consider pretty much everything to do with the building of an interior space that will affect human habitation, including materials, finishes, electrical requirements, plumbing, lighting, ventilation, ergonomics, and intelligent use of space. Interior designers with training in interior architecture will usually be present at, and have an important say during all stages of the construction process, from the initial plans right through to the finishing touches.

The year saw spy museums open in New York and and the Alps. In America David Adjaye completed the Spyscape museum of espionage, while at the precipice of a mountain in Sölden, Austria, Johann Obermoser’s cantilevered museum dedicated to James Bond opened to the public.

In the wake of the MeToo campaign and numerous sexual scandals, architecture’s focus was placed firmly on the actions need to address the profession’s continuing gender imbalance. Dezeen launched the Move the Needle initiative to improve gender equality, while the UK government made the the country’s largest studios reveal their gender-pay disparity.

As you think about your project, you should consider what services you think you’ll need or want, and then assemble a team that has the ability to pull it all together. Carefully analyze all of the parts of your home that you’ll want handled beyond the basic design, and see what your consultants can do and how that is billed. (Often architecture and interior design services bill a bit differently). If you think ahead it will be a better project that looks cohesive and wonderful.

Our process is fairly à la carte, as so many clients have a spectrum of interest in the process. Some clients are hiring us to make every single decision, while others really want to be part or sole owner of the selection of interior finishes and furnishings. Often we’ll have a client who has a great past relationship with an interior designer, and will bring that person to the table (hopefully early on), and we always welcome that working relationship. In the end, we feel it is our client’s home and helping them find a path to get a great finished product is our job no matter what level of interest or variety of design consultants that they want to bring to a project.

I field several questions from clients about the difference between architects and interior designers. When I’m in a discussion about plans to build their new custom home or renovate their existing home, this topic tends to surface to the top – and for good reason. Homeowners want to make sure their project is built or remodeled as efficiently as possible, and that means assembling the right design/build team from the very beginning.

In theory, architects and interior designers are highly trained professionals with comprehensive knowledge of architectural principles. Historically speaking, these two groups study different disciplines. Architecture is a highly regulated field. Above anything else, architects must design homes that are safe for the occupants. Because architects work with the main structure of a home, they are authorized to make changes to it. Interior Designers are allowed to change the parts of a home that do not interfere with its actual structure.

An interior decorator is solely concerned with the aesthetics of the building, including color schemes, furniture, and art work. They are involved with the art side of design, and less with the science. Interior decorators will have no concern with the structural design of the building and are not required to be as knowledgeable about building regulations. As in the image above of the Christmas decorations from the White house in 2014, there is no involvement with any aspect of the space other than with decor, so this project would require the services of an interior decoration contractor.

For those looking for a brief escape, off-grid holiday homes surrounded by speculator scenery appeared in the southern California desert, on the border between Turkey and Greece, and in the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland.

Jarod Hall – di’velept (@divelept)Architecture and the Myth of the Master Builder

An off-grid home alongside a loch was named RIBA House of the Year 2018, while a prefabricated home with a micro-farming wall was showcased at the United Nations Headquarters and Slovakian firm Nice Architects created a ggg-shaped micro home for off-griders.

When you hire an interior designer, he or she is typically going to handle the parts of a project that deal with how the interiors look. This can include selecting interior finishes (tile, hardwoods, carpets, wallpaper), as well as selecting furniture and soft goods (pillows, accessories, etc.). It ideally includes working with the architect on the layout out of the spaces, and how the cabinets, furniture, and other considerations work within the layout. This ensures that windows are properly placed, rooms are sized appropriately, and that the whole space feels harmonious.

Less has been more for many interior designers this year, with unfinished surfaces appearing in homes, cafes, and restaurants around the world.

For our review of 2018, deputy editor Tom Ravenscroft looks at the year’s biggest trends in architecture and interior design, including action to address gender imbalance, the rise of hyperloop and the move towards off-grid living.

  • Interior design is a broad ranging profession taking into account all aspects of planning and designing interior spaces in the built environment. The role of any two interior designers can vary greatly.
  • Interior decoration is concerned solely with the decoration or ‘art’ of a space including soft furnishings and color schemes.
  • Interior architecture is the balancing of the art and science of designing an interior space taking into account all elements of the build. However, a designer with training in interior architecture cannot call themselves as such unless they have the professional accreditation from an architectural body.

For those interested in even more espionage, the Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners-designed International Spy Museum in Washington DC is scheduled to open next year.

Over my 25 years in business, it’s undoubtedly true that the best project outcomes are the ones where the architect, designer(s) and home builder have excellent synergy, a great sense of collaboration, respect everyone’s roles and complement one another’s area of expertise.

With the prospect of high-speed travel networks made up of vacuum tubes getting closer to reality, architects have started drawing up plans for how hyperloop will change our transport infrastructure.

Elizabeth Diller, who was included on this year’s Time 100 list, said the industry was undergoing a dramatic change, while Odile Decq, Farshid Moussavi and Manuelle Gautrand protested against discrimination in architecture at the Venice biennale.

Let’s start with the similarities between these two fields. Experienced architects and interior designers (not the same as interior “decorators”) are qualified to create / design spaces that solve problems for homeowners. The primary way they do this is through spatial design and planning. The architecture and design fields are considered both an art and a science. The spaces these pros create need to be structurally safe and sound, functional and aesthetically pleasing. There are many technical aspects of design that both disciplines are required to understand thoroughly and properly address in their plans.

Michael LaValley – Evolving Architect (@archivalley)Architecture and Ego / The Architect’s Unique Struggle with ‘Good’ Design

The increasingly levels of technology in our lives is leading many people to seek a less complex life and either live, or holiday, in off-grid homes.

Elon Musk also looked to be making a move into architecture with plans to create bricks to be used in low-cost housing, while Dwayne Johnson – widely known as the Rock – stared in a film about a skyscraper.

Some architects like to pick finishes all the time, and some interior designers prefer handling the space plan completely (a dilemma more common than you might assume). I’ve seen this issue cause problems. This is where the train can derail unless your experienced contractor is clear from the beginning. You, the homeowner, will benefit from hiring a home builder / remodeler who can oversee this process to ensure that there is minimal overlap. When working with us, clients know I have this issue covered so they can avoid the explosive land mine of “dueling design professionals.”

Your general contractor should be hired first, if possible, or at least be brought on board before any design and planning decisions have gone too far. Part of the undeniable value of having someone like Donatelli Builders, Inc. as your contractor is that I personally make it crystal clear who is responsible for what, and I also will step in and redirect the ship when needed. If you don’t have someone like me leading your construction project, it can turn into a BIG disaster.

Finally, some construction companies are set up where they have an architect, interior designer and kitchen designer all under one roof as employees. I would advise you to avoid this scenario as well since it comes with its own set of disadvantages. Take a look at my blog titled “Do Home Remodeling Contractors Need Staff Designers?”

What I outlined above are not hard and fast “rules.” There are hundreds of particulars here that I can delve into in future blog posts. I’ve worked with talented architects who take it as far as completing the entire home’s interiors (anything that “remains” within the home when it’s sold, such as tile, flooring, cabinetry, custom build-outs and accents). Conversely, I’ve worked with proficient interior designers who have gutted rooms and designed spaces with beautiful architectural detailing. As you can tell, there are boundaries between the two, yet a little blurring in the middle where skills cross over.

If you step back and look at the room you’re in right now, you can imagine that there are a lot of decisions to make when planning out a space. Everything from where the windows are, to selecting that pillow on the couch, are decisions that need to be made, especially in single-family residences.

  • Focus on selecting interior materials, finishes, hardware, furnishings, textiles, drapery/window treatments, paint color, wallpaper and accents
  • Design the look/style of a home’s interiors (usually all rooms)
  • Design backsplashes, choose all tile, flooring and lighting (fixtures and placement)
  • Include a lighting plan for each room

In simple and broad terms, interior design is more to do with the art of the building and interior architecture more concerned with the science.

In addition, your general contractor should make sure that each professional of your design/build team is held accountable for his/her work and is always keeping the same end goal in mind: ensuring that your project is successful on both a functional and aesthetic level. With everyone working together toward a clear vision in mind, solutions will be achieved in an efficient way.

Among the most impressive proposals were UNStudio’s concept for hyperloop stations and Foster + Partners’ vision for a hyperloop cargo network (both pictured). Meanwhile, Priestmangoode created a full-scale prototype of a Hyperloop capsule and Designworks revealed interiors of the Dubai Hyperloop passenger capsule.

The changing needs of modern society have made the role of the architecturally aware interior designer increasingly prominent. In retail especially, a building is often redesigned on the interior only with the original shell of the building remaining unchanged. This kind of renovation project is the true realm of interior architecture.

This is by no means a full list, but it helps clarify a bit of the overlap of services between architecture and interior design.

Jeff Echols – Architect Of The Internet (@Jeff_Echols)Architecture and a Future Without Architects

Looking to the future, plans were announced to build the “world’s first” 3D-printed houses that people will live inside, and NASA revealed the winners of its competition to design a 3D-printed habitat on Mars.

There has been a debate raging for some time around the terms architecture, interior architecture, interior design, and interior decoration. The discussion centers on the blurring of the lines that define the role and responsibilities of each profession: where does the interior design of a space end and architecture begin, and vice versa?

After a long build-up, buildings are now being 3D printed. In Milan CLS Architetti and Arup used a portable robot to 3D print a house, while the US military used 3D printing to build a concrete barracks. Other 3D-printed projects include a garden pavilion alongside a house in China and a bridge 3D printed from metal, which was unveiled at Dutch Design Week.

Below, we have attempted to explain the differing roles and responsibilities of all of these professions.

There have been a number of factors over the last few decades that have increased the ambiguity of these titles, including the improvement of interior design education. This has in turn increased the scope of the profession and led many interior designers to becoming more involved with architectural and technical aspects of interior design, and less with the decorative, soft furnishings side.

The role of any two different interior designers may differ drastically. Whereas one may be more concerned with decor, soft furnishings and small scale projects, another may be more concerned with larger projects involving technical as well as artistic and aesthetic skills. The latter will be more likely to have studied interior architecture.

You can find more information about the individual cookies we use and the purposes for which we use them in the table below:

In the most basic form, when you hire an architect, we are looking at not only the forms of a space, but also the big picture pieces, such as life safety issues, engineering, exterior materials, and the big code questions. For a house, that means what the exterior looks like, how the house performs from an energy point of view, handling building permits, and often how the interior casework and cabinetry lays out.

I’ll add that the term “interior decorator” is a much smaller subset of “interior designer,” and is more about the selection of soft goods, furnishings, and window treatments (and often equally valuable as a consultant).

An interior decorator will not usually need to be involved from the beginning of the build and will not need to have in-depth knowledge of technical elements such as CAD and structural design. They must, however, be very artistic and have a fantastic eye for interior design trends and aesthetic detail.

Small or large, modern or traditional, public or private… we do that.

If you come away with knowing a little more than you did 10 minutes ago, then you’ve achieved a victory. This is a topic that doesn’t get covered a lot, but it should. I merely presented the “tip of the iceberg” as they say. If you want to ensure your custom building project doesn’t go down like the Titanic’s maiden voyage, please give me a call to chat further.

As a general contractor, I greatly value both of these professions and hold each in high esteem. However, I’ve also witnessed friction when competing professionals aren’t clear about steps/tasks that overlap within a project, which is often the case! You may have had a previous positive experience where everything worked out for you. If so, great. For those of you who haven’t undertaken a custom home building or remodeling project, I’d like to shed some light on this topic and offer you advice that will help you avoid major pitfalls.

All interior designers, even those trained as interior architects, should be skilled in the art of interior decoration in order to complete their job properly.

In the middle gray area, are the often ambiguous services that many architects and interior designers both perform. This includes selection of interior finishes, such as tile and woodwork, drafting of interior elevations and details, and space planning for furniture placement.

Other shared working spaces included an aquamarine co-working space in Warsaw, a homely space in Copenhagen and a co-working space in a former brewery in Brno, Czech Republic. Female-only co-working spaces also opened, in Toronto and within an old Brooklyn paper factory.

The term ‘interior design’ is used very broadly and can take into account practitioners of widely varying skill levels. This is often where the confusion comes from. However, a variety of skill levels within a given profession is common to all disciplines, and the argument of the difference between interior architecture and interior design is neither significant or constructive.
