The Tuscan Villa style is of Italian inspiration and can be identifies by some of the following characteristics: the low-pitched of flat roof, the wide overhanging eaves, the cornices, cupolas and towers, the asymmetrical shape and tall-looking façade. These houses usually have two or three stories and they often have a porch or an enclosed balcony. The windows and doors have arches and sometimes feature colored or etched glass.

Inspired by the 19th century structures from Switzerland and Germany, these houses became popular throughout the United Stated thanks to their charming designs. They have large windows, rough-cut lumber, exposed beams, gabled roofs with eaves and their exterior is usually painted in bright colors. They also have a raised stone foundation and often feature balconies.

As the name says, the inspiration for this style came from France. Usually, French style houses include the following characteristics: a tall hipped roof, a brick, stone or stucco exterior, multi-paned windows, an arched doorway and no dominant front-facing cross gable. The design was inspired by castles, farmhouses and manors.

Traditional homes often feature dark, finished wood, rich colour palettes, and a variety of textures and curved lines. Furnishings have elaborate and ornate details and fabrics, like velvet, silk and brocade, which may include a variety of patterns and textures.

A transitional design may incorporate modern materials, such as steel and glass, and then unite them with plush furnishings.

The intention is to create a relaxed and comfortable environment that is inspired by the beach and ocean.

Other common characteristics include all-white colour palettes and the incorporation of natural elements like form-pressed wood, bright plastics, and enameled aluminum, steel and wide plank flooring. If there are pops of colour it often comes from the use of art, natural fibre throws or furs, or a single piece of furniture.

Contemporary houses are extremely easy to identify, mostly because of their popularity these days. The main characteristics of contemporary houses are an irregular or asymmetrical façade, a strong geometric shape, large windows, clerestory windows and a distinctive roofline which can either be flat or gabled. They are built with natural materials and they are usually sustainable and eco-friendly. They are very bright inside and have open floor plans with flexible layouts.

Modern design employs a sense of simplicity in every element, including furniture. A word that’s commonly used to describe modern style is sleek, and there is not a lot of clutter or accessories involved with a modern style.

Bohemian is a popular style for home design and fashion. It reflects a carefree lifestyle with little rules, except to follow your hearts desire.

Spanish-style houses were inspired by the Mediterranean architecture from areas such as Portugal, Italy and northern Africa. They usually feature an asymmetrical façade and a stucco exterior. They have low-pitched roofs with red tiles. Their doors and main windows are arched and they often have porches. The interior design features molded details and dark-stained woodwork.

The primary difference separating modern and contemporary design style is that modern is a strict interpretation of design that started in the 20th century. Contemporary on the other hand, is more fluid and can represent a sense of currency with less adherence to one particular style. For example, contemporary style may include curving lines, whereas modern design does not. You can refer to modern vs contemporary article for more information.

They became popular in the late 20th century and their distinguishable features include an asymmetrical floor plan which can either be U-shaped of L-shaped, a patio, sliding glass doors, large windows and large informal living areas and children’s play areas. They have only one story and usually feature a low-pitched roof.

Mid-century modern is a throwback to the design style of the mid-1900s—primarily the 1950s and 60s. Transitional is a very popular style because it borrows from both traditional and modern design to facilitate a space that’s not “too much,” in terms of one style or another. There’s a sense of balance that’s appealing and unexpected.

Modern is a broad design term that typically refers to a home with clean, crisp lines, a simple colour palette and the use of materials that can include metal, glass and steel.
