Mix and match several motifs in the same color palette for a spirited space. A plethora of patterns enlivens a guest room in a Connecticut home designed by Miles Redd, from a Farrow & Ball wallpaper to a vintage fabric on the Louis XVI settee and chair. The swing-arm sconces and ceiling fixture are from Circa Lighting, and the table lamp is from Treillage.

For her youngest daughter’s little room in their redesigned Cape Cod home, interior designer Raquel Garcia wanted to create a cozy, nestlike feel with peachy printed wallpaper. “I call it her nest because it feels like little birds decorated it.”

Stripes are a classic choice for a bedroom. Try a bright color or wide stripe for a twist on tradition. Stripes of Benjamin Moore white and blue paints animate this bedroom in a San Francisco–area home; the curtains are trimmed with a Samuel & Sons border, and an Alan Campbell pattern covers the chairs, ottoman, and bench.

Use warm hues, such as reds, oranges, and yellows, to create a space that feels comfortable and cozy. In the red guest room of Jim Joseph and Scott Frankel’s Livingston, New York, home, a French Empire bed from Stair Galleries is paired with an antique Venetian-stripe carpet.

Go graphic with a black-and-white color scheme. Incorporate delicate motifs and soft textures to keep the space from feeling too harsh. The master bedroom of a Manhattan apartment designed by Neal Beckstedt Studio features a Madeleine Castaing–fabric wall covering, a bespoke burnt-oak four-poster by Neal Beckstedt, and vintage Jean-Michel Frank lamps; the side table at left is by Rose Tarlow Melrose House, and the jute rug is by Stark.

Light-catching white makes the small guest bedroom of this San Miguel de Allende, Mexico retreat feel open and airy. The four-poster bed is custom, and interior designer/owner Rela Gleason painted her mother’s vintage vanity table white; the basket is from Oaxaca and the throw is an antique suzani.

An oversize painting or a hand-painted mural can transform a bedroom into an art gallery. “Like the photography and art collected by the owners, the space frames perspective views,” Lee F. Mindel says of a New York penthouse he and Peter L. Shelton designed. “The room’s headboard wall integrates art and space in a gesture informed by Josef Albers,” he explains.

Ceramist Amanda Moffat’s Brooklyn townhouse has a big dose of personality with saturated colors, intricate patterns and an array of treasured heirlooms, and the attic bedroom is no exception. The Louis Vuitton trunk in the attic bedroom belonged to Moffat’s mother, the bed is dressed in Coyuchi linens, the 19th-century chair is from John Derian and the walls are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s White.

The custom bed in this Oakland, California guest room is a sleek twin size, maximizing floor space without sacrificing comfort. The linens are by Ralph Lauren Home, the floor lamp is by Original BTC, the rug is Persian, and the glitter-on-canvas artwork is by René Garcia, Jr.

In the bedroom of textile-designer Kathryn M. Ireland’s Santa Monica home, a Barley Twist bed is topped with Indian bedding from her collection. The pillows and curtains are in her fabrics, the chair is by Sika Design, the lamp is from Hollywood at Home, and the rug is by Woven.

In a couple’s 19th-century villa high in the hills on the isle of Capri, even the home’s smaller spaces offer an easygoing, contemporary retreat. In the tiny guest room, an installation of porcelain roses is by Art et Floritude. The marble tub is antique, and the floor is paved with travertine tiles.

Feminine shades of pink and purple and curvaceous furnishings create a romantic space. “I never repeat myself,” says Laura Hunt, who experimented with color and 19th-century style in her Manhattan pied-à-terre. “I don’t usually do a girlie look. When I decorate, there’s a subtle simplified elegance; this was a little more flamboyant for me,” says the designer of her guest bedroom.

Incorporating sunny shades of yellow and cheery florals make it a pleasure to wake up in the morning. In a Bahamas bedroom designed by Miles Redd, the floral Paule Marrot wallpaper is by Brunschwig & Fils.

A Sharp West Hollywood Flat Where Art—and a Few Surprises—Steal the Show

For a minimalist space, keep the palette restrained and pare furnishings down to the essentials. Interior designer Jennifer Post’s aim was to “respect the apartment’s prewar details” yet imbue the spaces with her elegant brand of modernism. In the master bedroom are Bret Reilly’s Lick (2006) and a 2001 Jacqueline Humphries oil. The rug is by Patterson, Flynn & Martin.

In Northern France, the daybed in this guest room is Louis XVI, and is the perfect, small-space alternative to a large bed frame. The side table in the same style is from the 19th century.

In art and furniture dealer Ralph Pucci’s Long Island beach house, a guest bedroom is characterized by whispers of grey and blue, which give the small space some big personality. The Charles P. Rogers bed is dressed in bedding by Restoration Hardware, and a Bertoia chair is paired with a vintage Indonesian desk. The photograph is by Christopher Makos.

Wood four-posters and sunny shades of yellow capture breezy British Colonial style. Carleton Varney brought a sophisticated take on Caribbean style to Janis and Duane Bobeck’s seafront residence on St. Croix, designed by architect Hortensia D. Lanio. The master bedroom’s gracious plantation bed was custom-made by a Jamaican artisan in collaboration with Patrice Wymore Flynn, Errol Flynn’s widow. Above it, Varney, who worked with colleagues Dan Parker and Andee Schell, arranged colorful floral photographs.

In a contemporary farmhouse in Los Angeles, the petite Italian seashell bed came from the owners’ former house in Europe, the mirrored side table is from JF Chen, and the chandelier was found on 1stdibs.

For a bedroom that’s energizing and stylish, go bold with floor-to-ceiling color. A 19th-century Persian light hangs in the Green Bedroom of a home in Morocco; the bedspread is Gujarati mirrorwork embroidery, the chest is 19th-century Moroccan, and the desk and chair are embellished with bone inlay.

You can’t go wrong with a blue-and-white theme. This classic color pairing works in both traditional and modern spaces. Painted furniture and a blue, white, and green palette freshen a master bedroom in Florida. Brackets from John Rosselli hang above a Louis J. Solomon faux-bamboo desk with custom-painted decoration by Christian; the curtain fabric is by Brunschwig & Fils, a Clarence House stripe covers the slipper chair, and the sea-grass carpet is by Stark.

New York City-based decorator Alex Papachristidis designed two twin beds, upholstered in a Mokum fabric, for the charming guest room in his London apartment. The side table is by John Dickinson.

Retail guru Jeffrey Kalinsky’s West Village townhouse maximizes the impression of space by keeping the use of color low to the floor in the master bedroom. A bed by Christopher Ostafin and a 1990s bench by Campion Platt fill out the space along with a circa-1950 chair by Illum Wikkelso from Hostler Burrows.

A piece of abstract art and streamlined furnishings add a modern vibe. “It’s meant to feel ephemeral and diaphanous, as if it were lightly inserted into the meadow,” architect Maryann Thompson says of the weekend house she designed for Doug Reed and Will Makris on 42 acres in rural Massachusetts. “The guest room has the same bed, the same side tables, and the same rugs as the master bedroom,” interior designer Thad Hayes says. “It was a very democratic approach.” The gouache is Sol LeWitt’s 1998 Irregular Form.

Combine relaxed pieces, such as cozy armchairs, with warm wood antiques for an elevated coastal look. Bring in blues for an extra nod to nautical style. A family’s 100-year-old Shingle-style summer house in the Hamptons was restored and expanded by New York architect Alan Wanzenberg. New York–based Thad Hayes was asked to do the interior design. “We wanted a house that our family could grow in,” says the wife. In the master bedroom, Hayes switched out an iron bed for a 19th-century English four-poster.

A bedroom doesn’t need seashells everywhere to be beachy. Focus on bringing in sandy hues, relaxed textiles, and natural materials to evoke that feeling of being at the shore. An antique suzani hangs in a guest room of designer Amelia T. Handegan’s Folly Beach, South Carolina, bungalow. The headboard is upholstered in a Kravet fabric, the patterned pillow is of a Raoul Textiles linen, and the walls are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Pink Bliss. The curtains and valance are made of burlap.

Have a little fun with your bedroom design by incorporating eye-catching shapes, colors, and textures. The master bedroom of Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan’s Shelter Island, New York, home features an array of Adler designs, including the bed, reading lights, tiles, feather headdress, and duvet; the ceiling fan is by the Modern Fan Co., and the curtains are of burlap.

Inside a historic house in upstate New York, the grey-and-white guest room downstairs makes a case for the less-is-more approach. The bed is dressed in linens by Matteo, the side chair was found in India and the stool is from Dennis & Leen. The lithograph is by Joan Miró.

Hang a canopy over the bed and incorporate tropical materials such as bamboo for an island-inspired bedroom. For Jim and Michelle Falk’s Maui house, “we tried a synthesis of island, bungalow, and Mediterranean elements,” says architect Joel Barkley, of Ike Kligerman Barkley. Wilson and Guidera created the master bedroom’s textile-draped four-poster.

Channel the adventurous spirit of a world traveler with an eclectic mix of far-flung antiques. “My goal was to create a finely detailed Spanish Colonial Revival house where none existed,” says Los Angeles designer Craig Wright. He turned for guidance to his former residence, an Andalusia apartment building designed in the 1920s by Arthur and Nina Zwebell. “The guest bedroom gives the impression of belonging to a gentleman traveler,” the designer explains.

Natural hues, geometric prints, and landscape paintings infuse the beauty of the Southwest into a bedroom. “I learned about New Mexico when I first started dating Jane Fonda,” remarks Ted Turner, who built a private desert lodge on Armendaris Ranch, his 350,000-acre wild animal preserve along the dramatic Fra Cristobal Mountains. “Ted doesn’t require luxurious accommodations,” says interior designer Laura Hunt. “He’s very cool that way. He just needs a pillow and a bed, and he’s happy.” Above: The master bedroom. The paintings over the walnut writing table and the console in the hall are by Bierstadt; the print is by Catlin.

Even though the bedroom is a private space that will be seen by far fewer people than your living room or kitchen, it should be an equally stylish sanctuary. Whether you want a traditional design or an exotic retreat, you’ll find bedroom decorating ideas to create the room of your dreams in this collection of spaces from the archives of Architectural Digest. Best of all, you don’t need a complete remodel to bring new life to your bedroom. As these rooms prove, some well-placed art, bold wallpaper, or even a fresh coat of paint can make a space stand out.

Small bedrooms can have a big impact with the right design. Whether you opt for the illusion of more square footage or embrace what you have, there are endless ways to make a small space livable and chic.

The 18th-century sleigh bed in the master bedroom of a Paris pied-a-terre is covered in a Travers fabric; the 17th-century Italian wall sconce is from Galerie Sylvain Lévy- Alban.

In the master bedroom of this San Francisco art dealer’s warehouse-turned-apartment, the broad headboard is covered in a Rogers & Goffigon fabric, the bed linens are by Sue Fisher King, the bedspread is antique Belgian linen, the walls are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Super White, and the artwork is by Joan Mitchell.

Ornate furnishings, antique accents, and rich fabrics are hallmarks of traditional French style. “The challenge was to make it comfortable while maintaining the magic of the original architecture,” designer Timothy Corrigan says of Château de Gallerande, his 15th-century estate in the Loire Valley, which he renovated. The 18th-century chinoiserie wallpaper inspired the design of the Chinese bedroom.

An intimate guest room in the poolhouse of a 19th-century farmhouse contains a John Himmel bed dressed in Schweitzer Linen bedding, a Swedish painted chest and a rug by Restoration Hardware; the matchstick Roman shades are custom.

In a tight guest bedroom in Paris, the custom day-bed, walls and curtains are in Pierre Frey fabrics. French doors flood the space with natural light, making the space feel larger.

For a graphic punch that’s still playful, one petite bedroom of this kid-friendly Manhattan duplex features a bed by DucDuc and a womb chair by Knoll. The futuristic pendant light is by Kartell, the map decal is by Dezign With a Z and the felt rug is by Patterson Flynn Martin.

Tucked into a tidy alcove in Steven Gambrel’s Art Deco apartment, this custom bed is upholstered in a Zimmer + Rohde fabric, while the houndstooth pillows are in a Holland & Sherry fabric, and the 1950s sconces are by Ignazio Gardella.

In John Robshaw’s country home, the cozy guest room’s headboard, bedding, and curtain fabrics are all by Robshaw, and the walls are painted in Dark Lime by Benjamin Moore.

Embrace a rustic look with pieces that look like they came straight from a charming farmhouse, such as gingham fabrics, four-poster beds, and spindle-back chairs. “They wanted a Shingle Style beach house with uncomplicated interiors,” Karin Blake says of the residence she designed for Greg and Teresa Nathanson in Malibu, California. The master bedroom “has high ceilings and lots of light,” Blake says. A portrait by Ammi Phillips hangs near the Vermont pencil-post bed. A lamp made from a train lantern is on the circa 1850 hutch table.

In Ninni Ryott’s diminutive rural cabin, a tiny sleeping loft is fitted with a bedside stool from Åhléns, and the white linseed-oil paint on the walls is by Kulturhantverkarna Färg.

In the guest bedroom of a Paris apartment, the custom forged-iron bed frame is finished in gold leaf and is dressed with pillows in Robert Normand and Lelièvre fabrics. The light fixture is a 1940 plaster bird sculpture, and the curtains are of a Pierre Frey chintz and Dedar fabric.

In the master bedroom of this colorful Upper West Side apartment, a Hästens bed is dressed in linens by Sferra and Olatz, the circa-1970 side tables are by Milo Baughman, and the lamp is by Taylor; the walls are painted in Farrow & Ball’s Cinder Rose, and the photographs are by Marsha Lebedev Bernstein.

For a look that’s bold and dramatic, use dark hues and luxe materials such as velvet and leather. A 1940s bed is paired with vintage Fritz Henningsen armchairs in Adam Levine’s Hollywood Hills bedroom; the work above the headboard is by Jean-Michel Basquiat. The black-and-white portrait is of Tupac Shakur, the lamp is by Philippe Starck, and the cowhide carpet is by Pure Rugs.

In a young couple’s monochromatic Swedish home, the master bedroom blends white and cool brown for a color scheme that makes the petite space feel more open and airy. The bed is by Hästens, and the lamp and stool are vintage.

The beam-ceilinged master bedroom of Amanda Seyfried’s rustic Catskills retreat includes a Restoration Hardware bed, a bench from Gilt, and a rug from ABC Carpet & Home. The pendant light is by &tradition, and the beadboard walls are painted in Ammonite by Farrow & Ball.

Warm woods, sleek lines, and plenty of white infuse calming Scandinavian style. A New York couple hired Shelton, Mindel & Associate to renovate their Central Park West apartment. A wall paneled in bleached walnut warms the master bedroom. Hanging over the Poul Kjaerholm chairs is a 1959 work by Lars Englund.

Spanish supermodel Eugenia Silva’s breezy Portuguese beach house features clean white walls with bold accents of color. The beds in one guest room are topped with crocheted-cotton coverlets from Bulgaria, the wall hanging is Portuguese, and the multicolored tile floor is original to the house.

For fashion insider Meredith Melling and her family, designers Ariel Ashe and Reinaldo Leandro crafted a hip new take on classic Martha’s Vineyard style. The low-windowed master bedroom’s Hans Wegner Papa Bear chair and ottoman are from Modernica; the bed is dressed in a duvet cover from Parachute and a throw from L’Aviva Home, the chest is a custom design, and the rug is by John Robshaw.

An incredibly tall canopy in gray linen with Samuel & Sons trim highlights the vertical space in the master bedroom of this renovated 400-square-foot East Village apartment. The coverlet is in a Miles Redd fabric for Schumacher, and the carpet is by Stark.

If your bedroom has incredible architectural elements or amazing views, let them take center stage by keeping furnishings minimal. Wallace E. Cunningham, assisted by Guy West, created a residence near San Diego with “structural fin walls that provide a sculptural statement and act as a louvered privacy screen,” he says. “We incorporated visuals to trigger memories from the owners’ lives. Framing views and light was a major artistic goal. The overhead span in the master bedroom seems to stretch the interior space and the horizon,” says Cunningham.

For a Silicon Valley family’s woodland retreat – sans the rustic implications of a cabin in the woods – architect Cynthia Wang and designer Jamie Bush conjured a completely new take on the country house that brings urban cool to Sierra, Nevada. The minimally-decorated bedrooms feature built-in wooden closets and a desk to keep from eating into the floorspace with hefty furnishings.

A transitional bedroom mixes traditional elements with modern pieces for a comfortable and stylish space. Jeff Neal hired designer Thomas Pheasant to shape the interiors of his 2,500-square-foot condominium in Washington, D.C. For the master bedroom, Pheasant referred to the aesthetic of an ocean liner’s stateroom. Sitting atop the circa 1810 Austrian mahogany pedestal, from Karl Kemp Antiques, is a late-1960s vase by Annelise Seidenfaden. The leather-and-brass lamps are from Baker.

In Ralph Lauren executive Buffy Birrittella’s East Hampton home, the bed in the master bedroom is from the Sundance Catalog. It is dressed with Ralph Lauren Home linens and an antique American quilt. The blanket chest and Tramp Art mirror are vintage, the sconces are by Ralph Lauren Home and the bedside table is custom made.

In the historic 19th-century London house of Milan-based design duo, Roberto Peregalli and Laura Sartori, a small guest bedroom’s headboard, bed skirt, coverlet and wall covering are all of the same Braquenié cottons. The pillows are covered with 19th-century Fez broderie.

Bill Gates and Melinda Gates Bought Daughter Jennifer Gates a $5 Million NYC Apartment

Why stick with one style? For an eclectic, personalized bedroom, bring in pieces from different provenances and periods. Picking a strict color palette will keep things cohesive. In the master bedroom of artist Cindy Sherman’s Hamptons house, designed with the help of Billy Cotton, a chandelier found at a Paris flea market is suspended above the bespoke Hästens bed. The indigo-dyed textile stretched across the coverlet and the vintage silk encasing the throw pillows are from Xenomania. The painting is by Bill Komoski, the wall lamps are from Get Back, and the ikat curtain panels are from the Textile Trunk.

Bring the spirit of the garden inside with floral wallpaper and fabrics. In the master bedroom of a New York home, an artwork by Frank J. Boros, hand-painted Gracie wallpaper, and curtains of a Brunschwig & Fils satin join a minimalist mantel.
